Contact Us Preparation for the construction of the Arizona Solar Racing Team’s 2001 car continues, with the main effort of the last week entailing the construction of a large plastic room in which the body of the new car will be built. Air-quality restrictions in the Electrical and Computer Engineering building require the manufacturing process for the car to be sealed off from the rest of the building, hence the construction of "The Bubble" a large plastic-and-PVC room that will be ventilated with air filtration units. It will be in use throughout the manufacturing stages of the solar car, with wrap-up of manufacturing expected in February of 2001. Chassis Design The bubble will house construction of not just the body as detailed in the last update, but also the chassis and any operations requiring adhesives or cutting. The chassis is currently in the final design stages, the last major component of the car not yet designed. The design process for the car started with the initial constraints of the race rules, and the requirement to fit the driver and all necessary components within the bodyshell of the car. Following this strategy, the car was actually designed from the outside in, with rough positions of the major components defining the constraints of the bodyshell, which was designed to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. A simple analysis shows the importance of aerodynamics above most other design factors for solar powered vehicles, so the aerodynamic design took precedence over the final designs of the suspension or chassis, although space was given to package each in the bodyshell.
