Ethnic Segregation in Arizona Charter Schools

[The editorial review and decisions on this article were the
responsibility of Anthony G. Rud Jr. of the Editorial Board Abstract
Among the criticisms of charter schools is their potential to further stratify schools along ethnic and class lines. This study addressed whether Arizona charter schools are more ethnically segregated than traditional public schools. In 1996-97, Arizona had nearly one in four of all charter schools in the United States. The analysis involved a series of comparisons between the ethnic compositions of adjacent charter and public schools in Arizona's most populated region and its rural towns. This methodology differed from the approach of many evaluations of charter schools and ethnic stratification in that it incorporated the use of geographic maps to compare schools' ethnic make-ups. The ethnic compositions of 55 urban and 57 rural charter schools were inspected relative to their traditional public school neighbors.

College of Medicine Catalog 200
Message from the Dean
updated 09/02
The visionaries who founded The University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1967 began with the goal of creating a premier health care resource for all Arizonans. Thirty five years later, the realization of that vision is an internationally recognized college of Medicine at the heart of a thriving academic health sciences center. This is an exciting time in medicine as we look forward to developing new avenues in health care excellence. The practice of medicine remains one of the most satisfying of all professions and we believe that the UA College of Medicine is an ideal place to earn your medical education. Since its founding, the College of Medicine always has been "Arizona’s medical school" – a resource for all of our state’s citizens. One of my highest priorities is to ensure we continue to increase outreach across the state and to offer our students a variety of options to serve clinical rotations in medically underserved areas. The coming years will see exciting new technology and programs, as well as major new facilities that allow the College to extend its services to the state as never before. It is an exciting time to embark upon the study of medicine. We appreciate and welcome your interest in The University of Arizona College of Medicine.

The Arizona Consortium on Latin America (NRC/FLAS)
The Arizona Consortium on Latin America was established in Fall 1999 between the Latin American Studies centers at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University. The consortium submitted a successful proposal to the U.S. Department of Education for designation and funding as a Title VI National Resource Center on Latin America beginning September 2000 and also received support for Foreign Language and Area Scholarships (FLAS) for graduate students. The abstract below describes the goals of the consortium during the first three years. General information about the Title VI program can be found on the Department of Education web site. The Arizona State University center is directed by Professor Tod Swanson. Abstract The rapid growth in the population and economy of Arizona, the Southwest, and the U.S.-Mexico border region has been accompanied by a significant demand for information, teacher training, economic and cultural activity, and informed public policy relating to Latin America. As we document in this proposal, the Latin American Area Center at The University of Arizona (UA) and Center for Latin American Studies at Arizona State University (ASU) already contribute significantly to these regional needsas well as to the overall development of a national expertise and dialogue on Latin America—through an extensive set of instructional, research, and outreach activities.

Accelerated Schools Center University of Nevada, Las Vegas jane@unlv.edu Welcome to the Accelerated Schools Center located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We are one of 12 satellite centers sponsored by the National Center for the Accelerated Schools Project located at the University of Connecticut. Our mission is to facilitate the initiation and continuation of accelerated schools across the Western United States. General Information Calendar of Events School Sites Links to Other Sites General Information The Accelerated Schools Center at UNLV was started in August, 1991. The center is located in the Curriculum and Instruction Department in the College of Education at the university. Adjacent to the campus is the newly opened Paradise Elementary School which is an accelerated school site. The center currently serves 19 schools in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The Accelerated Schools Project was launched at Stanford University in 1986 by Dr. Henry Levin. It is a comprehensive approach to school change, designed to improve schooling for children in at-risk situations. During his research, Dr. Levin was perplexed by the practice of remediating certain students. Though the practice of remediation is intended to allow students to catch up to their peers, research finds that remediation actually causes students to fall farther and farther behind the mainstream. Struck by the inequity of this system, he proposed a new kind of school where staff, parents, students, district office representatives, and local community members would work together to accelerate learning by providing all students with the challenging activities that have traditionally been reserved for students identified as gifted and talented. His viewpoint was that children caught in at-risk situations have exactly the same characteristics and potential of all children, including curiosity, desire to learn, imagination, and the need for support and affirmation. Consequently, accelerated schools are designed to bring all students into the educational mainstream by building on their natural strengths, and by having consistently high expectations for them, regardless of their background. Accelerated schools hold high expectations for every students, and provide each student with powerful learning experiences.
