Armenian Culture has earned its place in the history of the world by virtue of the fact that it is one of the oldest, continuous civilizations today. Throughout the centuries, Armenians have created a unique and remarkable culture at the intersection of east and west. Even though countless invaders attempted to destroy it, archaeological research testifies to its existence alongside that of the Babylonians and the Assyrians from at least the III Millennium BC, proven by excavations at Erebuni, Teyshebaini and Medzamor. In 301AD, Armenians were the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as their national state religion , and this influenced many developments in Armenian culture, and specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsime Gayane and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture

Armenian is an Indo-European language, and are the largest group of Indo-European speakers in Caucasia. The family of languages is reckoned to have originated in western Turkey and spread west into Europe and east as far as India by 1000 BC. The speakers claim it is rich and beautiful. Armenians converted early to Christianity (the oldest churches were founded in the 4th century), and the head of the Armenian Orthodox Church, the Supreme Catholicos, lives in Echmiadzin. The Armenian rite, the Church's ritual of worship, includes ancient, rhythmical chants. It is the only ancient church that doesn't celebrate Christmas. ELEMENTS OF PRE-CHRISTIAN RELIGION IN ARMENIA Henry Wathen Introduction Armenia's Pre-Christian religion is sometimes classified as Zoroastrianism. However, it is disputable whether it is correct to label it Zoroastrianism as this does not take into consideration its earliest Indo-European origins, Sumerian links, as well as Assyrian , Babylonian and Hellenic influences; the latter being very strong from Alexander the Great's conquest of Mesopotamia in 331 BC to the rise of the Sassanid dynasty in Persia in 226 AD. Although Armenia was the first major kingdom to adopt Christianity, in 301 (314) AD, many rituals and symbols of the Pre-Christian era have prevailed to our times. As early as the 6th century AD, the Armenian Apostolic Church separated itself from the Church of Byzantium by rejecting the confession adopted at the council of Chalcedon, thus the Armenian Church has been spared from the reforms and splintering that Western Christianity has been through. After the Seljuk conquests and during the Age of Discoveries when trade along the Silk Road declined, Armenia lost its importance as a throughway for trade. The resulting isolation helped conserve the uniqueness of Armenian Culture. Even up into these last years of the 2nd millennium of the Christian Era, ancient symbols and rituals have prevailed in Armenian society. (Philol.), professor, Director, Institute of Literature, Academy of Sciences of Armenia (Erevan, Armenia) Disintegration of the Soviet Union is a fact that cannot be described in simple or unambiguous terms. To my knowledge, there has yet been no work that could offer an objective and profound treatment of the subject. Emotional, one-sided assessments prevail, no matter positive or negative, which fail to reveal the true significance of the grandiose changes. I believe that we should pay attention to at least two circumstances. First, the event was sudden and revolutionary. We spent the years that have passed since then to talk about reforms—yet we lived through a revolution. No matter how strange this may seem, the early 1990s can be compared with 1917. In both cases the cardinal and revolutionary changes altered millions of lives of those who knew next to nothing of how to adjust to them. Market relations, the cult of private property and everything else connected with the new relations descended on people and created huge psychological problems for them. Poverty of the majority of population in the former Soviet republics made these problems an important part of people’s spiritual life. Little Armenia goes to Hollywood The Year 1967 AD As an outcome of the fiftieth commemoration of the Genocide, in 1965 a group of Armenians in Southern California, representing all political and religious segments of the Armenian community, saw the need for erecting a memorial on public land honoring the victims of the Genocide. They established the Armenian Monument Council, which applied to the City of Montebello for a plot of land on which to build a suitable monument. After considerable discussion and several public hearings, Montebello offered a hilltop in Bicknell Park for the project. The groundbreaking took place in 1967, and construction was completed in time for the 1968 commemoration of April 24. Some 10,000 people attended, the largest gathering of Armenians in the United States to that date. Ever since, annual April 24 commemorations have taken place at the monument.
