One of the world's oldest centers of civilization and once the smallest republic of the Soviet Union, Armenia is an independent republic in the Caucasus Mountains.Armenia covers an area of 11,500 square miles (29,800 square kilometers). It is situated in the southern part of the Caucasus, the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea . Armenia borders on Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Iran. Yerevan, near the Turkish border, is the capital and chief city, with a population of about 1.2 million.
The land is a lofty plateau, crossed by mountain ridges and cut by valleys. The highest peak is Mount Aragats, an extinct volcano 13,418 feet (4,090 meters) high. The climate is cool in the highlands and warm in the lowlands.
About 90 percent of the people are ethnic Armenians. The remainder of the population is made up primarily of Azerbaijanis and Russians, with a small number of Kurds, Ukrainians, and other groups. The Armenians belong mainly to the Armenian Apostolic church or the Armenian Catholic church.
The chief agricultural and industrial region is the Araks River valley. Irrigated fields produce wine grapesthe most important cropfigs, olives, pomegranates, cotton, and fruits. In higher altitudes grains, sugar beets, tobacco, potatoes, and hay are grown and cattle, sheep, and goats are pastured. Mineral resources include metal ores.

Armenia: a Historical Timeline
What follows below is a timeline of significant events in Armenia's history. I've gradually put it together as I've read and learnt about Armenia's long and complex history. I hope you will look at it with understanding; that I have no political agenda beyond a general support for the survival and prosperity of the Republic, its people and their culture. I don't support - indeed, have little knowledge of - any political party. I am merely an outsider with a small portion of Armenian roots, who is fascinated by history and interested to learn more about the particular history of this small but important people.

This site is devoted to Armenia and its History . It mainly consists mainly of pictures I took during a journey I made there in the Summer of , and I don't pretend that they represent the country any more than that. Things were in flux. The Soviet ie. Russian presence was still strong, the rouble was in use but sinking, there was conflict in Karabagh and Global Culture hadn't yet arrived. It's also unrepresentative because, more than with most nations, 'Armenia' is much more than the geographical Republic. Its location has moved around a wide area of the Middle East, as it has been pushed and invaded from all directions. And there is a huge diaspora, historically going back to the Middle Ages, but mainly dating from the ravages of genocide in the 1890's and 1915. And that's what I derive my small connection from. New : I have added to the picture selection . The timeline is part of a long term project to learn about Armenian history. This will be corrected and extended, and I intend to add short essays eventually, linked to the timeline. I recently wrote a personal essay in the journal section of my personal site about the way we in the UK have dealt with Holocaust Memorial Day

OPINION It is dimly lit and dank as a cavern inside the old National Bank building two blocks from the White House. The electricity is off, and we make our way around with the aid of a flashlight. Its narrow beam reveals an impressive three-story atrium with a carved wood ceiling, dated-looking ATM machines and an old bank vault, its yard-thick steel door yawning open. I'm exploring this vintage space with Ross Vartian of the Armenian National Institute (ANI), a branch of the increasingly powerful Armenian Assembly of America, an ethnic lobbying group. The ANI bought the building last year for $7.25 million, with the aim of transforming it from a place that safeguarded money to one that will preserve a memory. Four years from now, Vartian tells me, this space will be a $50 million museum and memorial filled with mural-size photos, personal artifacts and interactive exhibits chronicling the history of an atrocity that time and politics have long obscured: the Armenian genocide of 1915 to 1923. Visitors will learn how, in those eight years, 1.5 million Armenians living in the eastern Anatolia region of present-day Turkey were massacred or perished in forced death marches ordered by the nationalist Turkish regime of the declining Ottoman Empire. Vartian says he wants the museum to be as emotionally powerful and historically accurate as Washington's hugely popular U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. That means being honest about not only the Turks who slaughtered Armenians, but also those who tried to save them. "Just about every Armenian who survived, including a member of my own family, was saved by a righteous Turk," says Vartian. But whether it honors righteous Turks or not, the museum will not be seen as historically accurate by the Republic of Turkey.

The Armenian Diaspora Today about half the world's Armenians live outside Armenia. Armenian communities have emerged in the Middle East, Russia, Poland, Western Europe, India, and North America, where Armenians have gained a reputation for their skill in crafts and in business. Although accurate statistics are not available, the Armenian Diaspora is about equally divided between the 1.5 million Armenians in the other republics of the former Soviet Union and a similar number in the rest of the world. The post communist Republic of Armenia has officially defined the Armenian nation to include the far-flung Diaspora, a policy in accord with the feelings of many Diaspora Armenians. A common theme in Armenian discourse is the need to preserve the culture and heritage of the Armenian people through education and mobilization of younger members of the community. In this task, the Republic of Armenia enjoys the enthusiastic support of the international Armenian community, which sees a new opportunity to impart information to the rest of the world about Armenian cultureand especially to rectify perceived inattention to the tragedy of 1915. The Armenian Diaspora maintains its coherence through the church, political parties, charitable organizations, and a network of newspapers published in Armenian and other languages

Brief History
For months I tried to write a brief history about Armenia, then I found this page written on the 26 th of April 1994 by Armen A. Vidian a student at MIT. I think it expresses my thought and feelings, I can't do any better, so I will present it as it is. About a year ago, I was waiting for the Massachusetts Avenue bus one day with a friend. In the process of updating each other on our respective lives, I told him that I decided to join the Armenian Students Club at MIT. At this my friend gave me a confused look and asked me, "Why does there need to be an Armenian students club? What do you have to talk about?" I guess that the answer to this question is not obvious to most people. Most of my friends in college know of Armenia as a small country, if they have heard of it at all, with a forgotten history. Many people do not even know that Armenia has its own language, or that it was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion. And I myself cared little about joining an Armenian club when I first came to MIT, as my most distinct memory of Armenian Sunday school was of being derided for being the only person to attend a private school. I had heard all the horrors of escaping from the 1915 Massacre in Turkey, a genocide in which over one-and-a-half million Armenians were killed, from my grandparents. However, my youthful ignorance, coupled with a language barrier barred me from learning more from them. Furthermore, in certain situations, I had trouble reconciling myself as an American with my more traditional Armenian upbringing. In my experience, I had found Armenians to be provincial and extremely closely knit. Many Armenian parents that I knew at home, themselves raised in a protective environment, mandated that their children stay close to home for college and had strict control over their children's lives. This has been a problem for me, as I went far from home for college and enjoy the choices that American life provides. Hence, confirming my Armenian identity was about the last thing I wanted to do in college.

Armenian Genocide Memorial The worst atrocities against Armenians occurred in the Ottoman Empire during World War I (1914-1918), when widespread massacres of Armenians were sanctioned by the Ottoman government of the Young Turk era. The Ottoman government accused the Armenians of being pro-Russian and cited the threat of internal rebellion as justification for the massacres. The Ottoman government also ordered massive deportations of Armenians from their homelands in Ottoman-held territory mainly to the deserts of present-day Syria. Many Armenians perished from starvation and disease or were killed by Ottoman soldiers during the forced marches. Although Russian and European powers protested the genocide, they did not intervene, and the Armenians succumbed with little organized armed resistance. By the time World War I ended, more than 800,000 Armenians had died. The massacres continued into the early 1920s. During the genocide many Armenians escaped to other countries, including Russia and the United States. By 1923 Anatolia (present-day Asian Turkey) was nearly emptied of its Armenian population. ... BACK Armenian history in brief Ancient Armenia (3500 BC - 520 BC)
Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world with a recorded history of about 3500 years. The oldest known ancestors of modern Armenians, the Hayasa-Azzi tribes, also known as Proto-Armenians, were indigenous to the Armenian Highland in Eastern Anatolia. These tribes formed the Nairi tribal union, which existed until late 13th century BC. The legendary forefather of Armenians, Hayk, famous for his battles with Babylonian ruler Bel, most likely was one of the Hayasa tribal leaders. The words 'Nairi' and 'Nairian' are still used by Armenians as poetic synonyms of the words 'Armenia' and 'Armenian'.
At the end of the second millennium BC, another Indo-European ethnic group, closely related to Thracians and Phrygians and referred to by the Greeks as Armens, migrated to the Armenian Highland from Northern Balkans. According to a Greek myth, which actually reflects this tribal migration, the forefather of Armenians - Armenios - was one of the Argonauts, accompanying Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. In the year 1115 BC, king Tiglath Pileser I of Assyria reports a battle with a force of 20.000 Armens in the Gadmokh province of Assyria.

History of Ancient Armenia and Urartu. Armenia, under Roman influence, was never under one outside rule. The country of Armenia was first settled approximentally 6000 B.C. by a group of Thracian-Phrygian tribes that crossed in Anatolia from the Balkans. The Armenians established themselves as a new ruling aristocracy imposing their Indo-European language. This was the civilization of Urartu. This country has beautyin its breathtaking lakes and immense plateaus, in a harsh and rugged winter set in some of the highest mountain tops int the world. In its rich alluvial soil great resources abounded, including grapes, tobbacco, apricots, nuts, and apples. It also had very important natural resources as well, including gold, silver, copper, alumina, iron, granite, and marble. The Romans exploited these resources more than the Armenians did. About the book: In this atlas, Robert H. Hewsen traces Armenia's turbulent history, from ancient times to the present day through more than two hundred and thirty full-color maps packed with information about physical geography, demography, and sociopolitical, religious, cultural, and linguistic history. Robert Hewsen's work is the first definitive historical atlas of Armenia and the first such atlas to be published for any of the former Soviet republics. The book is divided into five sections, each of which begins with a chronology of important dates and a historical introduction to the period. Specialized maps include Ptolemy's second-century map of Armenia, as well as maps of Roman, Cilician, Ottoman, tsarist, and Soviet Armenia. Other maps show the Persian khanate of Erevan, the Caucasian campaigns of World War I, the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian monuments in Turkey and Transcaucasia, the worldwide diaspora, ground plans of selected cities, and plans of the great monastery of Echmiadzin in 1660, 1890, and 1990. The atlas concludes with maps portraying the Karabagh war and the new Armenian Republic. Looking Toward Ararat: Armenia in Modern History Images of sample maps: Mt. Ararat
