FAMILY TREE
of the Indo-European languages
The common ancestor of these languages has been traced to Asia rather than to Europe, the authors say. The once-clear distinction between the family's Eastern and Western branches is now blurred M igrations and Cultural Diffusion carried the Indo-European protolanguage from the homeland, which the authors place in the Transcaucasus (see Historical Armenia maps), and fragmented it into dialects. Some spread west to Anatolia and Greece, others southwest to Iran and India. Most Western languages stem from an Eastern branch that rounded the Caspian Sea. Contact with Semitic languages in Mesopotamia and with Kartvelian languages in the Caucasus led to the adoption of many foreign words.

Early History
The region and former kingdom of Asia Minor that was Greater Armenia lay east of the Euphrates River; Little, or Lesser, Armenia was west of the river. Armenia is generally understood to have included NE Turkey , the area covered by the modern republic of Armenia (the eastern part of ancient Armenia), and parts of Iranian Azerbaijan According to tradition, the kingdom was founded in the region of Lake Van by Haig, or Haik, a descendant of Noah. Modern scholars, however, believe that the Armenians crossed the Euphrates and came into Asia Minor in the 8th cent. B.C.

Empires in the West and East-from the Parthians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs to the Persians, Mongols, Turks, and Russians-were almost always at war, trying to capture land and riches beyond their own territories. Armenia often stood between them. Sometimes the empire builders and their forces dealt with the Armenians savagely, capturing rulers, seizing women and enslaving men, looting treasuries, and trying to convert the people to their religion. A brief glimpse of Armenian History
The Armenians trace their history to sixth century B.C. Throughout history Armenia has been a battlefield for many invaders, contending empires, and a bridge for many cultures and civilizations. During the past 2,700 years, Armenia was conquered by the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, Byzantium, the Arabs, Seljuqs, Mongols, Tatars, the Ottoman Empire, Safavid Persia, and the Russian
Empire. Armenian kingdoms, principalities and even a short-lived empire (95-55 B.C.) managed to survive and thrive for some 1,700 years. Under various kings and princes, the Armenians developed a sophisticated culture, an original architecture and their own national alphabet. In the year 2001, the Armenians will celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as their religion. The Seljuq conquest of the last Armenian kingdom in the 11th century marked the beginning of an exodus of the Armenians from historical Armenia resulting in the advent of an Armenian Diaspora. As a result of this migration, an Armenian kingdom was established on the
shores of the Mediterranean, in Cilicia. This kingdom, often an ally to the West during the period of the Crusades, absorbed Frankish culture. The kingdom fell in 1375, ending the independence of the Armenian Statehood.

Raffi Kojian has been living in Armenia for over a year and a half. He says, "It is a really
great place for any expat who is not scared off by winters similar to Boston, although
areas of a lower elevation do not get so cold. The cost of living is incredibly low, and the
world class philharmonic, dance groups, and other cultural events are virtually free. The
people are super nice; the real estate laws are quite accommodating and prices quite
remarkable. It is very crime free and a very interesting region for short and cheap trips to
other parts of the region. You get the picture. I think it is an especially good option for
people interested in urban retirement, for super cheap." Additional Resources

Strasbourg, 25 January 2001
Return to Speech Index Page
Mr President,
Mr Secretary General
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Armenia's entry into the new Millennium is signified by highly remarkable events, which attest to its rich history. This year we mark the tenth anniversary of Armenia's re-established independence. Having embraced firmly the values of freedom and democracy, we committed ourselves to transforming our society to this end. We are also celebrating one of the most important milestones in Armenia's history, the seventeen hundredth anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as a state religion. It is the celebration of persistence in our beliefs and our values. They have survived the tests and turbulence of history.
The past ten years were also the time for rediscovering Armenia's identity. With its rich historical and cultural heritage the Armenian nation has always considered itself part of the European civilization. Soon after having gained independence we declared our objective to engage Armenia firmly in the architecture of the new Europe. It is indeed symbolic that at the beginning of the new Millennium, in the year so meaningful for our nation, we are here today to celebrate Armenia's accession to the Council of Europe. This is an impressive illustration of the link between Armenia's past, present and the future.

THE ORIGIN OF KHATCHKARS AND THEIR PRACTICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Beginning from the second half of the 9th century, as a result
of the weakening of the Arab Caliphate, political power was restored in Armenia and new kingdoms were formed: the Bagratooni in Ani, the Ardzrooni in Vaspourakan and those of Kars and Sunik. All this contributed greatly to the progress of national culture.
From the 9-10th centuries, the Armenian cities of Ani, Lori, Kars and Van began to flourish, monasteries and cloisters were founded (Tatev, Sevan, Gntevank, Sanahin, Haghbat, Horomus), which at the same time became important centers of spiritual culture. There was a renaissance in architecture, the paintings of frescos and sculpture (Tatev, Aghtamar, Gntevank, etc.), which had not only catechismal but also secular significance.
It is in this period that khatchkars appear.

ARMENIANS (September 8, 1987)
By Dennis R. Papazian

The University of Michigan, Dearborn
Armenia and Armenians Armenia is one of the fifteen constituent republics of the USSR. The present-day Armenian SSR, located in Transcaucasia, represents only the eastern fringe of the traditional Armenian homeland which extends east from the Euphrates across the mountainous Armenian plateau in eastern Anatolia presided over by Mt. Ararat of Biblical fame. Historic Armenia has also been described as the land of the three major lakesVan (presently in Turkey), Sevan (in present-day Armenia), and Urmia (presently in Iran). Armenia has one of the oldest indigenous cultures of any of the peoples of the USSR. Armenia is also credited as being the first state to establish Christianity as its official religion. Contemporary scholarship suggests that the Armenians are descendants of various indigenous people who meld (10th through 7th century BC) with the Urarteans (Ararateans); while classical historians and geographers cite the tradition that the Armenians migrated into their homeland from Thrace and Phrygia (Herodotus, Strabo), or even Thessaly (Strabo). These views are not necessarily contradictory, since present-day Armenians are undoubtedly an amalgam of several peoples, autochthonous (Hayasa-Azzi, Nairi, Hurrians, etc.) and immigrant, who emerged as one linguistic family around 600 BC. The Armenian language, like Greek and Iranian, is a part of the Indo-European family of languages that is spoken from north India, through Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, and Greece into Europe and European Russia. The Armenian alphabet, devised early in the fifth century by St. Mesrob (Mashtotz)who also produced a script for the Christian Georgians and Caucasian Albaniansis unique, although based in part on Greek uncials and the Armazi variety of Aramaic script. Armenia was located near the cradles of ancient civilizationsthe Mesopotamian, bordering immediately to the south; the Egyptian in the southwest; and the Indus to the eastand was affected by each, but most significantly by Mesopotamian. The name "Urartu", in the form "Urashtu", occurs frequently in Babylonian inscriptions. The earliest known mention of the "Armenian" people (as the
