Write to Learn
The Brooklyn College Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 2 May 2000 A Skeptic's Guide to Writing Across the Curriculum
by Paula Jolin At the end of a lecture or discussion, ask students to take three minutes to write a few short sentences on "what I learned today" or "one thing I didn't understand about this lecture." Not only will students get an opportunity to order their thoughts in written form, you'll also have the chance to measure the success or failure of the lesson, and to spend more or less time on explanations of various ideas and concepts. Ask a question at the beginning of class about the reading or previous lecture. Allow students five minutes to write a short answer. Students then read their responses out loud, which could begin the discussion. This is also a great way to include shy students who may be reluctant to participate in class discussions. When returning a piece of writing, ask students to respond - in writing - to your comments. Their response could take a number of different forms: students might clarify questions you have about their work, or they might take the opportunity to offer new ideas. This exercise will not only help students to improve their original work, it will turn the grading process into a dialogue. Students could return their comments to you, they could bring them to a short conference about their work or you could enter into a dialogue through e-mail. Another suggestion is to ask students to attach a cover letter introducing their work.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar The country, whose male population is unkind unreligious and unaware of the distinction between the good and the evil and don't care about justice and fairness and where abiding the rituals is the chief preoccupation of religion, should not give birth to girls!
[His god-like kindness expressed in the 2nd volume of publication on Remarriage of Widows.]
The materialistic world of the West looks down on India as a poor nation. That assessment is and remains empirically valid, no doubt, even at the end of the twentieth century.
But a society, nation or country that is ever endowed with a great man with a personality, grace and kind soul like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar can be impoverished but hardly poor! Popularly known as Vidyasagar (meaning 'sea of knowledge'), Ishwar Chandra himself was the seat of learning. A gift of God his life was a glittering gem of morality, an exposition of the bliss of modest living, a blue sky of compassion, an everest of unfaltering dedication, a fountain of inspiration, a river of love and indeed an ocean of kindness.
Watch closely how this man lived his life, how he shared his time between his family, his friends, his community and his nation, how he spent his endless energy for awakening awareness of his countrymen and for the emancipation of his nation, how he gave away every comfort of life for the sake of others and your heart will warm up to the message of this man's life. And your life will never be the same again! His graceful gift of love and affection will enrich your existence and humble your thoughts for ever.

SUBJECT - "MEDICARE: ITS CONTEXT AND EVOLUTION" THE POPULARITY OF THE MUCH-MALIGNED MEDICARE PROGRAM I. INTRODUCTION It has become almost habitual among policy analysts and policy makers to adorn the federal Medicare program with derogatory adjectives such as "moribund," "obsolete," "inefficient" and "unsustainable." It is argued that the program has not kept pace with the pace of innovations in the private health-insurance market and that the private sector could administer it more efficientlyhence more cheaply than can the public sector, thus delivering more "value" for the dollar.

Marshall St. John has decided to step down from his position as Webmaster for the Internet Cello Society. Instead, he will concentrate his energies on his own fantastic website, http://www.celloheaven.com . Please join me in thanking Marshall for all that he has and continues to do for the cello. Though he will still be in contact, his energy and cheerful nature will be deeply missed by the ICS staff, especially by the ICS Editor. We have a new webmaster, however, Michael Pimomo. He is an intern that works with John Michel at Central Washington University. If you view our evolving home page, you will see his work in progress. Thank you, Michael!

"As governments around the world prepare to spend millions studying
the threat of nearby asteroids hitting the Earth, an astronomer in
Northern Ireland is warning that comets might pose a greater danger. "We

"Scientists have discussed alternatives to nuclear weapons, such as
placing solar sails on the asteroid. Energy from the Sun would then chaperone it into a safe orbit. It might even be possible to use a smaller asteroid as a "billiard ball" to knock an asteroid off-course. But none of these strategies has come even close to being tested, says Tate: "As a British general said before the Gulf War, 'If you haven't practised it you can't do it'."

Except for the SyndaKit concert, since my return from tour in December I've been entirely immersed in the studio composing the music for Yellowman, a play by Dael Orlandersmith. It's an intense and moving theatrical work. I've known Dael for a while and have always been impressed with her monstrous talent and presence - I was quite proud to be asked to create the score. The play opened Sunday, January 13 at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. More info can be found here:

When the McCarter run finishes, Yellowman opens at the Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 20 after which it moves to the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut in April and the American Contemporary Theatre in Seattle in July. Bible Query from Romans
To find a particular topic, word, or verse, use the Edit->Find function, or click on the chapter.
Q: In Rom 1:4, since Jesus was declared the Son of God, was He the Son of God before?
A: Yes. Someone can be something before they are declared that to the world. There never was a time before Jesus was the Son of God, but God waited until Jesus was born on earth to declare this to humanity. Q: In Rom 1:18, how can people hold the truth in unrighteousness?
A: It is all too easy for people to at least partially agree on the truth of what is right and best for others, and not to practice it themselves. Q: In Rom 1:19-20, how can everyone know of God through nature?
A: Five points to consider in the answer.
We can know many things about God through nature. For example, no created thing could create itself. There is a Creator, who is greater than created beings. We also can see God's majesty, power, and beauty in Creation, though Creation is fallen.
People can make up their own strange interpretations of the facts. For example, the idea of spontaneous generation, a "scientific fact" of the Middle Ages, said flies could come from rotting meat, and life could come spontaneously from non-life.
Many important things about God we cannot know through nature. For example, the Trinity, Jesus dying on the cross, and Jesus coming again.
