There is evidence that in ancient times a distinct subfamily of Indo-European languages existed that is now called Thraco-Phrygian. To it belonged Phrygian (an ancient and now extinct Indo-European language of Anatolia) and Thracian (a now dead Indo-European tongue of the Balkans in antiquity). Modern Armenian may well be a direct descendant of Phrygian. Today Armenian is the mother tongue of more than 5 million people, of whom over 3 million live in Armenia; 1 million live elsewhere in the republics of the former Soviet Union; and the rest are in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the United States. Armenian is an old, rich, and vital language. Although spoken in antiquity, it was not recorded in writing until the early 5th cent. A.D.

(Note: This excerpt does not reflect how the book's 175 pages appear in print.)
The Armenian language has two main dialectsEastern and Western. As with any language, depending on where and when an ancestor lived, variations in writing and word meanings should be expected... To be able to read entries in old church and civil records is one of the first requisites for doing Armenian research. This chapter provides help for those who are not familiar with the archaic form of handwriting found in most of the old Armenian records. You do not have to know how to read everything; but you should be able to recognize certain essential words in print or handwriting to find your name-date-place information. This chapter provides examples, explanations and comments on the following aspects of genealogy to help your research in Armenian records: 1) the Armenian alphabet, with Armenian and English pronunciation guides; 2) example of line placement of handwritten letters of the alphabet; 3) examples of handwitten variations of each letter of the alphabet; 4) copies of original Armenian baptism, birth, marriage and death documents, each one shown transcribed into Armenian print, transliterated into English equivalent, and translated into English; 5) list of words often found in research which are handy to know or be able to refer to; and 6) a list of given and last names (examples only of English spelling) to help you transliterate from Armenian to English...

One of the six countries represented on it is Armenia" (Armenian Academic Research) Movses of Khoren, 5th century historian, connects the origin of Armenians, according to popular legends, with Haik (Hayk), an epic hero and one of Noah's great grandchildren. Quick Facts Type Alphabetic Family Proto-Canaanite Location Armenia, West Asia Time 5th century CE to Present The Armenian alphabet was created in the 5th century CE by Saint Mesrop under influences from Greek (as reflected in the alphabetical order and the left-to-right direction of writing). The alphabet's original 36 letters were well suited for the Old Armenian language. Two additional letters, "o" and "fe", were added later during the late Middle Ages to write loan words, bringing the total number of letters to 38. The Old Armenian language was the only written form of the language from the 5th to the 19th century, while in the intervening centuries, phonological changes have split the Armenian language into two dialects, namely Eastern and Western. However, only the Eastern dialect is taught as the written form at school nowadays as it is closer to the historical Old Armenian form, even though the Western dialect is more widely spoken. In the following chart, both the Eastern (EA) and Western (WA) phonetic values for each letter are given. The name of the letters are given in the Eastern dialect, but you can directly translate any name to its Western version by simply mapping all the Eastern phonetic values to their Western counterparts.
