Areas of Concentration
Although the B.F.A. degree options are Art Education, Design Communications, and Studio Art, students may elect to concentrate in a specific area under the Studio option; e.g., Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, or Sculpture. In addition, Minors are offered in Art History, Design Communications, and Studio.
Art History
Faculty : David Ribar (full-time; also teaches Drawing and Figure Drawing), Aimee Valiquette (part-time; also teaches Art Appreciation)
"Art is history and history is art."
Art has a special place in every society, from the beginning of time to our present. Art is part magic, part science, part truth, part imagination. Art is what defines our history and beliefs and communicates to every culture and society the concrete facts and spiritual truths of the heart and mind.
Ceramics
Faculty : Jason Briggs (part-time)
"Art is a language! Anyone can use it to communicate. Everyone has a voice and that is where originality lies. The more you learn about a medium or a combination of media the better communicator you can be. You learn a medium by demonstrations, imitating, investigation, and reading. But mainly by doing! Nothing can benefit the individual more than the actual act of working with the clay."
The focus of ceramics is to introduce techniques within handbuilding and throwing that are relative to both contemporary and historical clay work around the world. To work with anatomical, architectural, and natural form, surface, color, and the tactile qualities gives students the individual freedom to fully express themselves in both the sculptural and utilitarian aspects of ceramics. As with any medium, learning to communicate with clay can be a lifelong pursuit and a constant challenge. The main goal here is to get our students excited by that constant challenge and to realize the growth that comes with that lifelong pursuit and thirst for more and more knowledge.

about what we teach, how we teach it and when we teach it these are its programon building even stronger music, art and music/art appreciation programs.
http://www.hilltopcds.org/other_news.asp
April 3, 2003
Headmaster's Back-to-school Night Remarks, 2002
In addition to the local recognition our expansion has gained us, Hilltop has also gained recognition on the state and national level with the successful accreditation visit of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools last spring. Hilltop is now officially certified for accreditation and has just one step to go to complete the full-accreditation process. This is a major milestone for the school.
But these obvious signs of growth and success are not where the growth we are proudest of has occurred. This growth has occurred in our children, our classrooms and our program. We are stronger and more focused in not only our educational mission and vision, but also in its implementation. We are more professional as a faculty in the application of the art, craft and science of teaching. As a professional faculty, we aim to demonstrate a seriousness of purpose. We take what we do and the responsibility that we share with you, seriously.
Educating children is serious work, it can be fun too, but it is serious, hard work. Children are not always predictable; they do not fit perfectly or neatly into any one learning theory, educational philosophy or preconceived notion that we may hold about them. Children are unique and individual. As a faculty and a school we recognize this; we treasure this. We are more accountable and more responsible to our students and our families; and we aim to continue to be even more so.

Can you help me find good Art and Art Education Resources on the Internet?
Absolutely! There are literally thousands of art-related Web sites out there. And, while many are not worth your time, we have found some site that are truly wonderful. We have compiled some of them into a resource list right here on our site and as we find more, we will add them to the list. Want to take an Internet Art Tour? Just click here
Can I show programs listed as "K-5" to a junior high class and, vice-versa, can materials listed as "5-12" be shown to younger students?
When a program is earmarked as "K-5" previewed for this very reason.
Do you have nudity in any of your Wilton Programs?
We have made a concerted effort to not include nudity in any of the Wilton Programs. We do, however, distribute excellent programs produced by museums and foundations which may include famous paintings or sculptures of nudes.
Are the Wilton Programs disciplined-based?
DBAE (disciplined-based art education) programs have four components: art history, art criticism, aesthetics and art production. No program combines the first three components better than the Wilton Art Appreciation Programs. Art history, art criticism and aesthetics are under one word appreciation: to know and understand, to critically evaluate and exercise wise judgment, to hold in high regard. We do not produce "how to" programs, but believe the art production in the art room/studio will be enhanced with the art appreciation experience. There is one major exception to the previous statement. Our

Product Spotlight on MeetTheMasters.com “I have a son that loves art. In other words, he loves to “make” art. I would like him to learn about the history of art and some of the great masters, like Monet, VanGogh and others. But I don’t know where to start. We don’t have a museum close by where we can view great masterpieces and many of the art sites on the internet are too difficult to teach. What’s a homeschooler to do? Is there some decent art appreciation curriculum out there?” For this hypothetical homeschooler, the answer is a resounding YES! MeetTheMasters has brought the world of fine art to the homeschooler’s front door! The idea of MeetTheMasters was first conceived 17 years ago by Bonnie Steele and implemented on a volunteer basis the her children’s elementary school. Since then, the program has been refined and is currently being used in more than 300 public schools nationwide. This year, MeetTheMasters was converted to an easy-to-use homeschool version. MeetTheMasters is a 4-year program that contains over 30 different artist units. There are three different levels available - Level 1 for K-2nd grade, Level 2 for 3rd-4th grade, and Level 3 for 5th-8th grade. Year 1 is now complete for the Homeschool Edition, and Year 2 will be released Spring 2001 with 7 new artists!

Unity with Diversity

The Mandala Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace through art and education. It offers a visual demonstration of individuals coming together to create something larger than themselves while maintaining their personal uniqueness. Exalting our common denominators builds a foundation for peace, of which art is a cornerstone. Truth, beauty, and goodness are values that can be agreed upon in every culture. We all see beauty in nature, and through art we experience the beauty of different cultures. All cultures find truth in scientific facts and goodness in compassion. The Mandala Project invites everyone to share in personal expression of common denominators known within our values of truth, beauty and goodness. Honoring what we have in common while respecting our differences increases our capacity for creating peace. Truly, the better we understand our neighbors, the easier it is to care for them.

Sights and sounds – interweaving art, music and environmental education Throughout history, the environment has been a powerful source of inspiration for visual artists and musicians. From the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, France, to Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite, to a modern-day kindergartner drawing lollipop flowers beneath a puff-clouded sky, nature had long found expression in sounds, shape, texture and color. Art and music inspire environmental awareness and appreciation, too. "America the Beautiful," Vivaldi's Four Seasons symphony, an intricate sculpture, or a simple sketch all focus attention on the natural environment and inspire us to nurture and care for it. You can make art and music part of your environmental education efforts in many ways. Drawing or painting helps children see and internalize detail in the world around them. Music evokes mental pictures of scenes in nature and reinforces the link between the outdoors and positive, uplifting feelings. Both art and music reinforce knowledge by helping embed concepts in young minds through the use of multiple senses. Some ideas for weaving art and music into environmental education (and vice versa!):

Who will teach the Youth?
EGA has the knowledge and strength in membership to pass on the embroidery skills that were once taught from one generation to another. Times and life-styles have changed and these skills no longer automatically pass from one generation to the next. One generation has already been lost in transferring these skills. Let's not lose another. If we don't teach them, who will? Teach the youth of today to become tomorrow's EGA members. What are the Youth worth?
The schools, community centers, and scouting programs of America provide opportunities for teaching youth but are faced with shrinking financial and personnel resources. EGA can provide teachers and supplies as needed. How do I begin to teach for tomorrow?

Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... April 2001 New York City March 2002 Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Release Jazz Appreciation Curriculum
By Marie Holmes Wynton Marsalis, renowned jazz musician and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, divided the auditorium of MS 44 into two parts and taught the audience a simple call and response – “How are you?” “I’m fine” – to demonstrate the clave , a common rhythm in Latin Jazz. The middle-schoolers that joined Marsalis onstage, who were selected for their perfect attendance records, had already mastered the clave and other elements of jazz music. They wowed the audience with their improvisational skills as they demonstrated the break , scat-singing and playing their kazoos with aplomb. Marsalis and others came to MS 44 to promote their Jazz for Young People Curriculum, a joint effort between Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and Scholastic, Inc. Mayor Bloomberg stopped by to congratulate Marsalis and his collegues and to officially proclaim February 26, 2002 Jazz Education Day in New York City. Marsalis explained that the curriculum grew out of the Jazz for Young People family concert series and outreach work in the schools. The curriculum, Marsalis explained, “travels without us” and has “an impact that lasts far beyond us being in a city or a school for a day or an hour.”

Teaching Changed My Life
How A German Scholar Found Extremely Hard Work and Happiness in A Classroom
By John Romo When the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Alumni Association held its Celebration of Educational Excellence awards program October 17, they chose as their keynote speaker an alumnus of the school who had recently been named as a college president. John Romo M.A. '73 became the president of Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) last summer after three years as chief operating officer of Planned Parenthood in New York. He had previously served in various capacities at SBCC. Following are excerpts from his remarks to alumni and current graduate students. I came to Santa Barbara from the Los Angeles area in 1968, and never looked back. What brought me here was a Regents Fellowship to pursue studies in German Literature. My wife was offered a job as a speech and language therapist in the Goleta Union School District, and I began my work as a German scholar. The German literature program was excellent, but I very soon realized that I had made a mistake. I wasn't appropriately committed to the life of a German literature scholar. I wanted to be a part of those who were changing the world (or so we thought).
