Why Teach Art?
All children need a variety of experiences to assist them in exploring their environment. Through art, children learn to value their own uniqueness and to appreciate the individuality of others. The teacher needs to choose art activities of variety which will contribute to all aspects of a child's development. In summary, from the California Kindergarten Association publication, Art Really Teaches , Dr. Violet Robinson, President 1992-94 discusses Child Development Through Art.
Personal Development
Art provides an opportunity to augment creative expression, self discovery, self esteem and self concept. Dr. Robinson points out that each work of art creates a sense of achievement in the child or children who create the art.
Social Development
She notes that social development is enhanced as children learn to cooperate during group art projects. When individual projects are combined as in art quilts, young artists gain a sense of individual contribution to a group product and develop a "we" feeling.
Physical Development
Small muscles, eye-hand coordination, dexterity, and a sense of rhythm are developed as children engage in art activities.

  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities will stem from the large number of teachers expected to retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; job outlook will vary by geographic area and subject specialty.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and "hands-on" learning to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. As teachers move away from the traditional repetitive drill approaches and rote memorization, they are using more "props" or "manipulatives" to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or adding and subtracting by playing board games. As children get older, they use more sophisticated materials such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers.

Top What these workers do Kindergarten and elementary school teachers teach children to read, write, speak, do math, and much more. They use games, music, art, films, computers, and other tools to teach children basic skills. When children learn, they feel good and will do well in school later on. When they grow up and go to work and become parents, they will do a good job because of what they learned when they were young.
Most kindergarten and elementary school teachers teach several subjects to one class of children. In some schools, two or more teachers work as a team. They teach a group of students at least one subject. In other schools, a teacher may teach one special subject to a number of classes. Usually they teach music, art, reading, science, math, or gym. Some teach classes that are filled with students from different grades.
Kindergarten and elementary school teachers may write with chalk on a chalkboard. They also may use films, slides, overhead projectors, or computers. All these things help children learn in different ways. With computers, children can talk with students in other countries. Computers also help students solve math problems. Sometimes they help children learn to speak English better. Many teachers use computers to record the children's grades. Teachers have to keep learning to make sure that they know how to use computers and other machines in their classes.

The standards in this section describe the cumulative skills and knowledge expected of all students upon exiting grade 4. Students in the earlier grades should engage in developmentally appropriate learning experiences designed to prepare them to achieve these standards at grade 4. Determining the curriculum and the specific instructional activities necessary to achieve the standards is the responsibility of states, local school districts, and individual teachers. These standards provide a framework for helping students learn the characteristics of the visual arts by using a wide range of subject matter, symbols, meaningful images, and visual expressions, to reflect their ideas, feelings, and emotions; and to evaluate the merits of their efforts. The standards address these objectives in ways that promote acquisition of and fluency in new ways of thinking, working, communicating, reasoning, and investigating. They emphasize student acquisition of the most important and enduring ideas, concepts, issues, dilemmas, and knowledge offered by the visual arts. They develop new techniques, approaches, and habits for applying knowledge and skills in the visual arts to the world beyond school.

Window Painting: On the next rainy day, have your students paint the window using fingerpaint or tempera paint. Have them paint a sun, rainbow, and handprint butterflies. This will brighten up the room on a dreary day!
    Thanks to Deborah Wade
Powdered Tempera on Glue: Children squeeze glue onto heavy paper, making a design. Then sprinkle powdered tempera on top and let dry. Shake off loose tempera when dry.
    Styrofoam Tray Printmaking: Styrofoam tray
    Tempera paint
Speedball ink,or if printing on fabric, ink that will set and be colorfast
    Rollers
    Paper or fabric
pen or pencil The idea is for students to create a design on the tray with pen or pencil by indenting somewhat into the tray. Letters will print reversed so if you/they want letters they need to be drawn in backwards. After the design is complete, students evenly roll ink onto the tray. Then place a piece of paper on the ink, use a rolling pin to help transfer the design onto the paper or fabric. Carefully, evenly lift paper and you have a print! Repeat with other colors or using different kinds of papers. If using fabric, let dry and sew together as a quilt! Thanks to Kimberly Shields-Tapper Glue Drop: Mix glue with tempera paint or food coloring. Drip on waxed paper with tongue depressors. Let dry; then peel glue drops off of waxed paper. Glue drops on paper and color and paint around them.

More than half of the enrollment in studio art courses each semester are students majoring in areas other than art. The Department responds to this opportunity to contribute to a wide range of educational goals by basing course content and pedagogical approach on a view of studio experience as part of education in a broad sense rather than primarily as training for the profession. Those students who want additional emphasis on professional aspects of study in the arts will find enthusiastic instruction and encouragement. Do You Need to Teach Kindergarten?
Karen M. Gibson “What curriculum do you suggest for Kindergarten?” This is a question I am frequently asked by parents. It is also a question I find particularly difficult to provide a quick, easy response to. The truth is I do not believe that a curriculum is necessary for Kindergarten, but that usually is not the answer parents are looking for or expect. They are certain that Kindergarten is that magical time when suddenly what was “life” must become “education” and therefore needs to include workbooks, textbooks, and organized lessons. So they are hoping I will have ideas and suggestions for an organize course of study all laid out in black and white. Many parents have this rosy, magical, idealized vision of public school Kindergarten and believe they need to recreate that at home. My children attended public school kindergarten and believe me, there was nothing magical about it. Kindergarten is geared towards the lowest common denominator (surprised?). Any child that already knows their letter sounds, how to write the alphabet and numbers 0-9, and do simple addition like 2+2 = 4 is going to be a very bored child in Kindergarten.

West Bay Christian Academy An Introduction to Kindergarten Art The Kindergarten Art program at the Academy may be the first experience children have with formal art instruction. Through their curiosity and interest in animals, seasons, holidays, natural objects, and decoration, students are introduced to skills and concepts using themes that integrate with the overall curriculum. Lessons use a variety of materials such as paper (colored construction, wallpaper, tracing, oak tag), tempra paints, feathers, glitter, crayons, pastels, colored pencils, cotton, yarn, and foil. These materials provide different appearances and textures and give the students opportunities to master skills of coloring, cutting, gluing, weaving, and lacing. The children also get to practice following directions while having fun. A goal of Kindergarten Art is to teach concepts of color-mixing, shapes and symbols, and patterns and representation through simple lessons and manipulation of the materials.

Back to Planned Courses PHILOSOPHY OF COURSE:
This course will introduce children to the world of art and artists while developing manual and perceptual skills. Careful attention will be made for aligning the content of the course to their natural developmental levels and to their past and present experiences. The course will provide opportunities for personal expression and creativity. The course is very child-centered and will aim at developing an intrinsic love for art and learning in general. Interpersonal skills and collaborative efforts with other children will round out their early experiences in school. PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATION:
Evaluation is based on the observation of process and final product. The student's degree of competence in the technical skills associated with the processes of media, evidence of understanding and applying concepts associated with visual language in their own art products, and the visual and verbal literacy associated with aesthetics and criticism through oral responses will be compared to specific declared lesson objectives.
    For example:
Can the student fold a piece of paper in half accurately?
