Kindergarten Information
Philosophy and Purpose of Holy Cross Lutheran School
The Lord has commanded parents in Proverbs 22:6, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." More specifically in Ephesians 6:4 the Lord has told parents to bring up their children '"in the training and instruction of the Lord." The Lord has also commanded us in Matthew 28:19-20, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Holy Cross Lutheran School therefore exists to assist the parents of our students in carrying out God's command to train their children and to be a beacon of the Gospel to the children and parents of our community. Our school is a place where children will learn to know God the Father who created them, God the Son who redeemed them from the curse of sin by His blood, and God the Holy Spirit who made them His children through baptism and continues to nourish their faith through His Word. All subjects are taught in the light of God's Word. All teaching, learning, guiding, and living are directed by that life-giving Word and, with our Lord's blessing, will result in each student growing in faith and love for the Lord and for others. Specifically, our Lord recognized the value of little children when He said in Mark 10:14 "Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Our Christ-centered kindergarten program exists to assist parents in preparing their children for entrance into first grade.

Teacher Certification Programs
Teacher Education Programs in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction prepare students to teach in early childhood, elementary and secondary schools. Teacher Licensure The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners issues teacher licenses on the recommendation of Iowa colleges and universities whose programs have been approved by the Iowa Department of Education. Undergraduate students pursuing a major in elementary education or who are seeking secondary school licensure must meet the College of Liberal Arts requirements for either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree as described in the College of Liberal Arts section of the Catalog. Graduate students seeking secondary teacher licensure may be admitted to a program as "certification only" candidates in the Graduate College. Eligible graduate students also may complete teacher licensure by pursuing an M.A.T. degree in English education, foreign language education, or science education. Eligible students may also apply to the M.A. degree in social studies education. Before taking required professional education courses, students must be admitted to the teacher education program (TEP). In order to be considered for admission, undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.70.

Introduction:
Are you asking me 'WHY' is art so affective a medium for teaching written communication?
Well I'll tell you a few reasons why...       Art in itself is a form of communication, an extension of the person who has done the art, a way of communicating that which is within to those who are on the outside, a way of reaching inside to bring out that which is hidden to be revealed, a way to express much more in depth than with the limits of vision for written communication by using senses such as COLOR, SOUND, TOUCH, and even TASTE       BESIDES ART IS F U N!       There are many artistic disciplines that can be incorporated into teaching written communication - from the Fine Arts to the Culinary Arts. Who would not prefer to EAT their MATH as PIZZA fraction problems rather than just doing them? There are a great many articles and books which discuss how to incorporate the arts into teaching this is not intended to replace nor to extend these but simply to introduce you to the concepts of using art to help the child learn written communication and to share with you a few of my own personal experiences.

Wage Kindergarten teachers spend much of their time leading students in activities ranging from completing work papers or making art projects to leading music or games. Teachers generally prepare lessons, get materials ready for activities, grade papers, attend faculty meetings, and decorate bulletin boards, etc. after school hours. Workplace Examples Local Government Education Tribal Government Religious Organizations Working Conditions Kindergarten teachers spend much of their time standing, walking, stooping, kneeling or even sitting on the floor with students in order to participate with them. They may have to deal with all types of student behavior. Most teachers work a traditional two-semester, 10-month school year. Some teach summer sessions or take other summer jobs. Many enroll in college courses or special workshops during the summer to meet continuing education requirements for renewing their teaching certificate. Teaching is not a nine to five job. It requires a substantial amount of at-home work on evenings and weekends to prepare lessons, correct papers, etc. Working with kindergarten students can be especially taxing, since that age group is not yet used to the structure of a classroom and often have a very short attention span.

Side-by-side reading helps parents teach kids the joys of books Tuesday, September 22, 1998 By Karen MacPherson , Post-Gazette Staff Writer Most parents are eager to do their part to help their children learn to read. But it's a challenge sometimes to know how to help and determine which books are best for beginning readers. Asking your child's teacher for advice is the first place to start. Then it's off to the library, which should have lists of classics just right for children learning to read. Meanwhile, publishers are constantly presenting new books for new readers. This column offers a round-up of newly-published books for beginning readers. Next week's column will focus on new books for readers who've moved up from the beginning level but aren't yet ready for true chapter books. It's a simple but revolutionary concept: Books where parents read one part of the story while their child reads the other. That's the idea behind Treasure Bay's newly-minted "We Both Read" series, a truly fresh approach to teaching children to read. The first four books in the series are focused on popular children's tales, from "The Frog Prince" to "The Emperor's New Clothes." The series also includes an authorized version of two Beatrix Potter classics (combined into one "We Both Read" book) - "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" and "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny."
