No surprises here, MC Escher is one of my favorite artists, as he is with most of the rest of the world. Many people liken my artwork to that of Escher, but I definately don't. Escher's work is extremely precise, there are no 'happy accidents' which are so common in my loose penwork. The piece below is by far my favorite, an excellent representation of a quite complex and tricky idea. a good list of Escher resources on the web The best Escher book I've found (and there are soo many of them) is "The World of M.C. Escher" published by Abradale Press. Don't let the cover fool you, it is the most complete, including many images and studies I've never seen anywhere else. by Dexter Sear Kalaheo, Hawaii U.S.A. Born June 7, 1898, Escher was a self proclaimed graphic artist and self denounced studio artist. He became fascinated with the geometric processes of filling the plain (tessellation) and his imagery took a biased towards asymmetrical natural forms of which insects were often his subject matter. He made the comment that insects are generally best recognized from above; his prints reflecting this belief. In searching for the possible inspiration behind his insect imagery, it is hard to find much more than an obsession with process and order although he developed themes such as evolution and metamorphosis. Escher's biographies do expose some examples of his feelings towards nature. While observing 70,000 year old Lascaux cave paintings, Escher noted that prehistoric artists were in direct contact with nature unlike contemporary artists who are generally exposed to nature through what he considered an obstructive educational system. He later made an interesting analogy; illustrations compare to the graphic print as a caterpillar does to a butterfly. He went on to explain that illustrations are not acceptable as autonomous manifestations of art but that they are only an interim stage. Therefore, the illustration, like the caterpillar, as the end result is inherently dissatisfying. Escher respected the order he found within the insect realm. He commented that the graphic arts inherent fascination comes from the desire to multiply and that the beauty of the craft was in the forced limitations resulting from the technique.

M.C. Escher Brief Biography This biography is condensed mostly from the biography written by Bruno Ernst for the book M.C. Escher - His Life and Complete Graphic Work This biography is about 90% complete. Early Life Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in the Dutch province of Friesland . His parents, George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher, had three sons of which Maurits (called Mauk for short) was the youngest. His father, George, was a civil engineer. The Escher family was living in Leeuwarden in 1898, where George served as Chief Engineer for a government bureau. The family lived in a grand house named "Princessehof," which would later become a museum and host exhibitions of M.C. Escher's works. Young M.C. Escher moved with his family to Arnhem. He attended elementary and secondary school there, and also in the seaside town of Zandvoort, where he lived for a while to improve his health. In 1907, he started learning carpentry and piano. In secondary school, his marks were poor except in drawing. His art teacher took and interest in his drawing talent, and taught him to make linocuts. He failed his final exam and thus never officially graduated. In 1913, M.C. Escher met his lifelong friend Bas Kist in religious school (which he attended at his parent's direction, even though he wasn't very religious). Kist was also interested in printing techniques, and may have encouraged M.C. to make his first linoleum cut works. Amoung these early works is a portrait of his father which is the oldest surviving work by the artist. In 1917, the two friends visited the artist Gert Stegeman, who had a printing press in his studio. Some of M.C.'s work from this year were apparently printed at Stegeman's.

The Leonardo Gallery: Homage to Escher Introduction by Michele Emmer Among the most popular ideas of our time are multimedia presentation and interdisciplinarity, including the relationships between art and science. Maurits Cornelis Escher, for a great part of his artistic life, was an "attractor" who inspired connections among mathematicians, physicists, crystallographers and experts in visual perception. The first important exhibition of his work was mounted during the International Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam in 1954. Escher had a very strange destiny. His works are probably among the best known in the world, but perhaps his great success and the dispersion of his work all over the world are the reasons that his work as a graphic artist has not been investigated seriously and is not well considered by historians of art. This is why the idea of organizing a conference and an exhibition of Escher's work was taken up by the Mathematics Department of the University of Rome "La Sapienza." The ideas in the above paragraphs are not from my opening talk to the Escher Centennial conference held in Rome in 1998, but instead they are taken from the introduction I wrote for the catalog of an exhibition of Escher's work held at the Dutch Institute in Rome in March 1985. (The 1985 exhibition also took place during an international conference on Escher, entitled "M.C. Escher: Art and Science" [1,2], with lectures at the University of Rome "La Sapienza.")
