Post-Digital Painting
December 14-March 23, 2003
CRANBROOK ART MUSEUM
This group exhibition presents 12 contemporary international artists whose work reflects the dynamic visual perspective of the computer age. Using densely layered patterns, morphed imagery and cybernetic spatial distortion, an emerging generation of painters are adding renewed vigor to the traditional medium of painting today. Hailing from the United States, England and Germany, the artists included reflect the global impact of new technologies on vision and representation.
Post-Digital Painting is curated by Cranbrook Art Museum's Curator of Exhibitions Joe Houston. This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Burt Aaron, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation. David Klein and Kate Ostrove, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Nathan. "The purpose of all the American literature pages is to provide useful, interesting, commercial-free information on the subject and to provide links to the best information available for American literature from the earliest days through the 1920s. For each author page, I try to provide links to all available works on the web, except when these have been gathered by some major site (such as U C Berkeley's site on Jack London.) Most author pages have bibliographies and some additional information. The Timeline pages provide brief statements (as factually correct as possible) about events in American history and literary history." A wonderfully complete site by Donna M. How MAEP works sevencounty metro are and are represented by five artists from the Theremaining 30 percent lives outside the Twin Cities and are represented
http://www.artsmia.org/collection/maep_how.cfm
The MAEP is an artist controlled exhibition program. Its exhibitions are selected by a panel of artists who are elected by and from their peers at an annual meeting of the artist community held each fall at the Institute. You will find information about the artist panel here as well as information on how to submit a proposal to the panel. How MAEP Works The Artist Panel is responsible for selecting exhibitions and directing overall policy. Panel elections are held every fall at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts during the Program's Annual Meeting. All artists who live and work in Minnesota are invited to attend this meeting to participate in the nomination and election of panel members. The Artist Panel represents Minnesota's artist community. Approximately 70 percent of the artist population resides in the seven-county metro are and are represented by five artists from the metro area. The remaining 30 percent lives outside the Twin Cities and are represented by two artists who live in greater Minnesota. Each panelist serves a two-year term. One-half of the panel rotates out of office each year, a system that provides for new input while maintaining a certain continuity.

ASIA SOCIETY AND MUSEUM PRESENTS CONVERSATIONS WITH TRADITIONS: NILIMA SHEIKH AND SHAHZIA SIKANDER
    NOVEMBER 17, 2001 THROUGH MARCH 3, 2002
A collaborative exhibition of works by two female South Asian artists: Nilima Sheikh, born in undivided, pre-independent India and still living and working in that country; and Shahzia Sikander, in her 30s, born in Pakistan and now based in New York, is part of the opening celebrations of the new Asia Society and Museum, the Asia Society’s newly renovated and expanded headquarters at 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street) in New York City. Opening on November 17, “Conversations with Traditions: Nilima Sheikh and Shahzia Sikander” brings together about fifty objects, which includes some of their earliest works and pieces created specifically for this exhibition by two artists who draw on traditional techniques of Indian miniature painting in their work, though each articulates a very different relationship to pre-modern traditions and contemporary art practice. The exhibition includes examples of traditional paintings the artists love or have found particularly inspiring. Vishakha N. Desai, Senior Vice President of the Asia Society and Director of Asia Society Museum and Cultural Programs, who is also curator of the exhibition, said, “The Asia Society is a leader in presenting contemporary Asian and Asian American art in the United States. For over a decade we have consciously introduced Americans to the dynamic art practices in major urban centers in Asia. We would like to develop a more nuanced understanding of the diverse strands of contemporary Asian art, and are developing a new series of smaller-scale exhibitions of contemporary works by Asian and Asian American artists who create a kind of a dialogue with Asian traditions, which may fall outside of the framework of international artistic language. This exhibition is the first in this series.”

0044: Contemporary Irish Artists in Britain This exhibition, which gathers the work of twenty artists who work in all media, from painting, photography, and sculpture to video and installation, explores the question of identity in a world where mobility is considered the norm. Some of the best contemporary Irish artists now make their homes in England, particularly London. Many leave for the practical advantages of more schooling opportunities and a larger network. These artists, nonetheless, do not consider themselves exiles; many still have galleries in Ireland and travel back and forth frequently. "0044" represents the international telephone code into England, from Ireland. These digits can also be seen to represent the constant communication between places and ideas on the periphery with those at traditional centers of power. This exhibition is accompanied by a 175-page catalogue, illustrated in color and black and white, available in the Gallery Shop. This exhibition is made possible, in Buffalo, through the generous support of Ballynoe, LLC; William and Laurie Brosnahan; Thomas H. O'Neill, Jr. and Nancy Naples O'Neill; and an anonymous donor. Cecily Brennan
Cecily Brennan, who has spent the majority of her artistic career as a painter, brings to her sculpture her continued interest in psychological states. Brennan chose to use stainless steel rather than the more traditional materials of wax or bronze because it recalls medical instruments. Concerned with repair as well as protection, she likewise works to undercut Western sculpture's historical obsession with beauty and perfection. Her Hinge-Ons for Bad Days, 1999, draws inspiration not only from self-protecting shin guards but also from associations with domestic samplers and embroidery hoops. Previously an arts organizer and a recent member of the Cultural Relations Committee for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, Brennan presently lives and works in London.

    Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park

Putaendo, Quinta Región, , CL Chile
The Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park Association, sponsored by FONDART (Chilean National Arts Endowment, project nr. 144085) is currently offering fifteen residencies (twelve for sculptors, two for muralists and one for juvenile art educators) for the period from February 2- 23. The goal of the Putaendo Sculpture Symposia is to bring together prominent sculptors who, in collaboration with novel artists, will contribute to the expansion of the Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park, a non-profit association created in April of 2000. Concurrently, muralists-in-residence will continue the work previously done by artists in the streets of Putaendo, and an artistic activity will be organized with the participation of the local young people. The Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park: the concept of public art: The sculptures contained in the Sculpture Park are located on an open terrace, where they share their space with herds of goats, on the outskirts of the town of Putaendo, a farming community of some 10,000 inhabitants. The works of art in the Sculpture Park form part of the daily lives of the local population. The process of artistic creation, which takes place outdoors, allows the townspeople to develop a personal relationship with the work of art. After three weeks of intense labor, the artists leave and Putaendo returns to its longstanding activities, but the sculptures remain.

    Survey Notes
The People's Choice Survey on Chinese Public Attitudes Toward the Visual Arts" was sponsored by Komar and Melamid Studio as an integral part of its ongoing search for a people's art worldwide. It was conducted by a research group composed of Ji-qiang Rong, an ABD at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, and Professor Guoming Yu and Xiayang Liu, Directors of Public Opinion Research Institute, People's University of China. The fieldwork was carried out by CCTV Survey Network (China Central Television), whose coverage of China is second only to the Urban and Rural Survey Department of China Bureau of Statistics. Between May 28 and July 5, 1995, face-to-face interviews with a crosssection of 2,462 Chinese fourteen years of age and above were conducted in respondents' homes. The sample was drawn from a universe of 590 million urban and rural residents covered by the first and second programs of CCTV. Given the fact that most surveys undertaken in China have been limited to the largest cities and new economic zones in the southern and southeastern parts of China, this survey has reached far more extensively to the rank-and-file Chinese people, and gauged their opinions toward the visual arts. A more detailed explanation of the sample composition is contained in the technical appendix. The questionnaire was provided by Komar and Melamid Studio. Its adaptation for China involved translation from English into Chinese, some modifications in wording, and additions of questions that probed attitudes toward Chinese arts and artists. Beyond the aforementioned changes, the questionnaire remained largely intact, and therefore highly comparable with those surveys Komar and Melamid have conducted in the United States, and other parts of the world for the same purpose.

    Rodney Graham and Bruce Nauman:
    "...the nearest faraway place..."
    May 10, 2000 - June 18, 2000
"...the nearest faraway place..." will present a closely focused group of works by Rodney Graham and Bruce Nauman. This exhibition at Dia Center for the Arts, 548 West 22nd Street, will be on view through June 18, 2000, and then will reopen on September 13, 2000 through spring 2001. In cinema, the classic Western assumed an epic character. Subsequently subject to decades of relentless appropriation by high and low culture alike, this thematic has recently sparked fresh and unexpected responses from Nauman and Graham, responses that range from the dead-pan to the disarmingly irreverent. Assembling new and recent works that reflect the artists' mutual interest in this enduring myth and its mutant off-shoots, "...the nearest faraway place..." explores a seminal icon in the North American imaginary. Born in 1949 in Masqui, British Columbia, Rodney Graham studied art history at the University of British Columbia from 1968 to 1971 and at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver from 1978 to 1979. Beginning with a series of solo shows in the late 1980s, he has exhibited widely in North America and Europe, including in Documenta IX, 1992, and in the Biennale of Venice, 1997 where he represented Canada. His most recent museum exhibition was held at the Kunsthalle Vienna in Summer 1999. Graham lives and works in Vancouver. Another body of work by Rodney Graham related to the notion of the camera obscura is currently on view at Dia in the exhibition
