The MAEP is an artist controlled exhibition program. Its exhibitions are selected by a panel of artists who are elected by and from their peers at an annual meeting of the artist community held each fall at the Institute. You will find information about the artist panel here as well as information on how to submit a proposal to the panel. How MAEP Works The Artist Panel is responsible for selecting exhibitions and directing overall policy. Panel elections are held every fall at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts during the Program's Annual Meeting. All artists who live and work in Minnesota are invited to attend this meeting to participate in the nomination and election of panel members. The Artist Panel represents Minnesota's artist community. Approximately 70 percent of the artist population resides in the seven-county metro are and are represented by five artists from the metro area. The remaining 30 percent lives outside the Twin Cities and are represented by two artists who live in greater Minnesota. Each panelist serves a two-year term. One-half of the panel rotates out of office each year, a system that provides for new input while maintaining a certain continuity.

Opening on November 17, “Conversations with Traditions: Nilima Sheikh and Shahzia Sikander” brings together about fifty objects, which includes some of their earliest works and pieces created specifically for this exhibition by two artists who draw on traditional techniques of Indian miniature painting in their work, though each articulates a very different relationship to pre-modern traditions and contemporary art practice. The goal of the Putaendo Sculpture Symposia is to bring together prominent sculptors who, in collaboration with novel artists, will contribute to the expansion of the Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park, a non-profit association created in April of 2000. Concurrently, muralists-in-residence will continue the work previously done by artists in the streets of Putaendo, and an artistic activity will be organized with the participation of the local young people. The Cart Cemetery Sculpture Park: the concept of public art: The sculptures contained in the Sculpture Park are located on an open terrace, where they share their space with herds of goats, on the outskirts of the town of Putaendo, a farming community of some 10,000 inhabitants. The works of art in the Sculpture Park form part of the daily lives of the local population. The process of artistic creation, which takes place outdoors, allows the townspeople to develop a personal relationship with the work of art. After three weeks of intense labor, the artists leave and Putaendo returns to its longstanding activities, but the sculptures remain.

CHINA China's Most Wanted (wall size) China's Least Wanted (paperback size) Search survey results (with graphed results) Survey Notes The People's Choice Survey on Chinese Public Attitudes Toward the Visual Arts" was sponsored by Komar and Melamid Studio as an integral part of its ongoing search for a people's art worldwide. It was conducted by a research group composed of Ji-qiang Rong, an ABD at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, and Professor Guoming Yu and Xiayang Liu, Directors of Public Opinion Research Institute, People's University of China. The fieldwork was carried out by CCTV Survey Network (China Central Television), whose coverage of China is second only to the Urban and Rural Survey Department of China Bureau of Statistics. Between May 28 and July 5, 1995, face-to-face interviews with a crosssection of 2,462 Chinese fourteen years of age and above were conducted in respondents' homes. The sample was drawn from a universe of 590 million urban and rural residents covered by the first and second programs of CCTV. Given the fact that most surveys undertaken in China have been limited to the largest cities and new economic zones in the southern and southeastern parts of China, this survey has reached far more extensively to the rank-and-file Chinese people, and gauged their opinions toward the visual arts. A more detailed explanation of the sample composition is contained in the technical appendix. The questionnaire was provided by Komar and Melamid Studio. Its adaptation for China involved translation from English into Chinese, some modifications in wording, and additions of questions that probed attitudes toward Chinese arts and artists.
