He was trained in Florence, first in the technique of fresco painting by D. Ghirlandaio; then under the patronage of Lorenzo the Magnificent, in the Medici school. Here he became a sculptor. Here too, his mind was formed by the companionship of the Neo-platonic philosophers, artists, poets and men of letters Lorenzo had drawn to his household. Michelangelo's own genius was recognized and encouraged from the beginning. Michelangelo carved the large marble David for the city of Florence along with other works of this period are the Bruges Madonna, the painting of the Holy Family, and the large cartoon or design for a fresco, The Battle of Cascina, done in competition with Leonardo da Vinci. This important work was destroyed, but not before the studies of the nude in violent action had influenced many artists in a way that led ultimately to the style of Mannerism. In 1508, Michelangelo was assigned the job of decorating the whole of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with frescoes. This enormous undertaking took him over 4 years, working virtually single-handed. He was recalled to Rome in 1534 to paint his 2nd great fresco, The Last Judgement, which covers the whole area of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. MICHELANGELO (Part One). When he became a Dominican friar in his early twenties, he took the name Fra Giovanni, meaning Brother John. By then, he was already an accomplished artist. At his friary, he created a workshop for the production of paintings on every scale, from miniatures to ornate altarpieces. It is said Fra Angelico left his works just as he first painted them, never going back to retouch or repaint, because he believed his brushstrokes were guided by God. After he died, people called him Fra Angelico because both his life and his art were so angelic. Sandro Botticelli Botticelli's real name was Sandro Filipepi. Botticelli, which means "little barrels," was a nickname given to his rotund older brother that later spread to the whole family. Botticelli's father, a lowly tanner, worked hard to give his children a better chance in life. Young Sandro joined the workshop of Fra Filippo Lippi, a famous painter who had scandalized Florence by leaving his life as a monk to marry a former nun. Hercules and Cacus This 16th century sculpture of the legendary hero Hercules by Baccio Bandinelli was displayed in the town center of Florence, Piazza della Signoria, as one in a series of mythical scenes which celebrated the city’s major historical events. His heroism was viewed as analogous to the dignity and pride of Florentines during their age of dominance in the Renaissance. Made from bonded carrara marble, black marble base, imported from Italy, 7"W x 6"D x 19"H.
