Raphael Perez
The online gallery for Raphael Perez not only hosts his art but information on the artist which assists in understanding his art. Shading, dramatic lights and darks and the color red are a central point of the Perez style. Compositions range from wild colorful statements in abstracts or to some degree primitive form. Better yet a striking combination of the two. Subject matter include; still life, flowers, Paris, men, women, erotic art, the list is endless. Raphael Perez has definite mood and electricity to his work. Consider the image from his "Portraits" collection to the left. Perez has intensity, great emotion, and detail. A stark image conjuring many possible reasons for the emotion shown. In fact several for what the emotion is. The point here is that Perez has real feel in his works, yet enables you the visitor to establish some basis for yourself. Perez has a section on Lions. An apt subject for his style and use of bold darks and lights to create feel and continuity. In the image from his Lion collection at left the strong mood is set by all the artist has in play; color, shading, and imagery.

RAFFAELLO SANZIO (RAPHAEL)
Raphael was born in Urbino in 1483 and, together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo , was one of the greatest artists of the late Renaissance. He started work as a young man in the school of Perugino , a fresco of whom -"The presentation of the keys to St. Peter" in the Sistine Chapel- impressed him particularly for the perspective effect, which Raphael himself reproduced in his own style, in tne "Coronation of the Virgin" (1502-03) at the Vatican Museum, and in the "Wedding of the Virgin" (1504) at the Brera Gallery of Art. His pictures are characterized by a gentle and harmonious rhythm, enriched by the light and shade effects, like the "Dream of the Horseman", at the National Gallery in London, the "St. Michael and St. George", at the Louvre, the "Virgin of Granduca" (1504-05) at the Pitti Gallery, the "Belle Jardinière" (1507), also at the Louvre, and the "Virgin of the Goldfinch" frescoing the Signature Room (1508-11) with the famous "School of Athens", in which are portrayed according to the rules of classicism , the philosophers, as well as the Eliodoro Room (1511-14) in which he was helped by his pupils, among them Giulio Romano . Romano worked mainly on the "Borgo Fire" fresco (1514-17), a work typical of the

      Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)
Renaissance Raphael was born Raphaello Sanzio in Urbino. His first painting lessons came from his father. It is said that he then trained with Perugino. His early work supports this theory reflecting the clarity and harmony which is prevalent in the work of Perugino. Later Raphael worked in Tuscany and Umbria where the work of Leonardo da Vinci - especially compositional devices - influenced his development. Evidence of this can be seen in

The De Medici family is driven out of Florence. 1498: Savonarola is burned at the stake in Florence. 1503: Nostradamus is born. 1506: The Laocoon is discovered. 1508: Michelangelo starts working on the Sistine Chapel. 1513: Pope Julius II dies and is succeeded by Leo X. Biography: Raphael Sanzio was born in the city of Urbino on april 6th in 1483 at 3.00 AM, according to Vasari. His parents were Giovanni Santi and Màgia Ciarla. At the time he was born Urbino was a very prosperous city for the larger part due to it's ruler Frederick II, who was a great art lover. During the time he ruled, artists like Paolo Ucello, Piero della Francesca and Filippo Brunelleschi came to Urbino to work for him and the city. Around the year 1500 Giovanni, Raphaels father, a painter himself, went to Perugia to ask Perugino if he wanted to teach his son. During the next few years Perugino and Raphael produce several paintings together, for instance that of St. Sebastian, painted in 1501. It is now in the National Gallery in London. The first known painting signed by Raphael is called Crucifixion and dates from 1502-1503. The signature "Raphael of Urbino" indicates that he is artistically independent from Perugino. During the period of 1505-1509 Raphael frequently visits Florence to work on paintings commissioned to him by the rich and famous of that time. He was influenced by important artists of that time like: Leonardo da Vinci, Fra Bartolomeo and Michelangelo Buonarotti.

Raphael's Madonnas on Stamps Raphael is one of the most famous Madonna painters. He painted so many that his biography as a painter can be retraced and illustrated thanks to those outstanding artistic representations of Our Lady. The following is an attempt to present Raphael through his Madonnas, or at least a good number of them. Raphael's Madonnas are popular topics for Christmas stamps. Until 1991, Raphael's Madonnas were pictured on 298 stamps (or blocks of stamps) in 75 countries. Among the most popular we have: 1) Madonna del Gran'Duca
    2) Sixtine Madonna
    4) Madonna Ansidei
    5) Madonna della Sedia (chair)
    6) Madonna Aldobrandini (or Garvagh or with Carnation)
    7) Madonna with Goldfinch
    8) Holy family with Lamb
The first period: 1499-1504 Raphael Santi was born in Urbino/Umbria on April 6, 1483. The boy was taught by his father Giovanni Santi, an honest painter. Raphael is 11 when his father dies. At age 16 he leaves for Perugia. He is admitted into the school of Il Perugino, his true teacher and master. In 1502/1503 he spent 15 months with Pinturicchio in Siena. At 19 Raphael is still a timid, somewhat mystically inclined young painter of provincial origin and habits. His first Madonnas are young, with pouting mouth, round face and veiled head. The posture is traditional and rigid, the form at times fuzzy. Already his exceptional qualities of simplicity, grace and harmony in color and composition can be noted. His admiration goes to Fra Angelico whose Madonnas seem to escape gravity. He emulates his master Il Perugino but already his own genius transpires.
