ANDY WARHOL American (1928-1987) Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh. Educated in pictorial design and art history at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Warhol initially began his career as a commercial artist. After graduation Warhol moved to New York City and became an illustrator for magazines such as Vogue Glamour and Harper's Bazaar . In 1960, Warhol resolved to establish himself as a painter and soon gained renown as a leader of the Pop Art movement. His ubiquitous silkscreens of cultural icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, their images often endlessly repeated on a canvas, and his renditions of Campbell soup cans and boxes of Brillo pads are provocative statements about the commercialism and mass production of the era. Aside from paintings and silkscreens, Warhol has produced an impressive body of drawings and photographs. His Stitched Photographs (1976-86) are characterized by the striking repetitiveness also found in his paintings. Each piece consists of identical photographs literally sewn together.

Andy Warhol Andy Warhol is one of this centuries most culturally influential figures. His name is not only an important in the art community, but also in the entertainment community. For the better part of the '60s, '70s and '80s, Warhol's work both touched and entertained the American people unlike the art of anyone else. He is best remembered for his involvement in Pop art, and for his undying impact as a figure of adventure and success. '32 Campbell's Soup Cans' Childhood Andrew Warhol, then spelled Warhola, was born on 6 August 1928. As a child he grew up in the poorest parts of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father Andre Warhol, and his mother, Julia Warhol had three children in all. Warhol's father was a strict and well-disciplined father. One angry glare from their father and the Warhol children would instantly stop their mischief. Their father and mother were decent people. They made sure their children had enough to eat, and that they had their daily needs met. Their father adamantly made sure his family attended church every Sunday. Although they often experienced hardships, the Warhol family was always able to persevere hard times. Warhol was an average child for the most part. He and his family had regular routines and events in their lives. However good his home life may have been, Warhol hated the idea of attending school. Often times other children would bully and harass him. He even suffered a nervous breakdown at the age of 8. In order to make him feel better, his family took turns entertaining him with popular magazines, comic books and drawings for him to play with. It was at this point that Warhol became fascinated with art and Hollywood. From this point on, his life would be devoted to creating art.

Andy Warhol Back to Contents Next Page Warhol started as a commercial artist and illustrator and was also a store-window designer. He always kept in tune with the trends and fashions of the moment. Up until the early 60s footwear was a recurring theme in Warhol’s work. Many critics see this as his most important commercial phase. He was an undisguised fetishist and once had an idea to sell film stars’ underwear, washed at $15 and more for unwashed underwear. However, this idea never came to fruition. The first pictures Warhol painted in the 60s used graphic motifs taken from advertising and comics. He drew on these comics for inspiration and changed the small illustrations into paintings. In 1961 Warhol exhibited some of these works in the window displays of the Bonwit Teller department store. He ‘borrowed’ images from other sources and some of his images were complete rip-offs of other people’s images, and yet the public loved it. Roy Liechtenstein did the same thing with his pop-art comic book images. Warhol stunned the world with his iconic and ironic treatment of the humble soup tin and other supermarket goods. As a result of this he was constantly appearing in the press.
