The Manuscript Division's collections are not limited to the fields of political and military history. Represented are all areas of American studies, including our country's rich cultural and literary legacy. Some of the nation's most influential writers and artists are represented, none more notable than the preeminent poet Walt Whitman, whose writings exemplify the rich literary flourishingoften called the American Renaissancethat began in the mid-nineteenth century and that also featured the writings of Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Twain, and Emily Dickinson, all of whom are also reflected in the division's collections. The division holds the world's most extensive Whitman collection, including the only surviving manuscript page from the first edition of Leaves of Grass (1855) and many drafts of the poet's famous dirge "O Captain! My Captain!," which was inspired by Abraham Lincoln's death. Twentieth-century literary papers include representatives of a wide array of movements, forms, and points of view. The papers of western writers Owen Wister and Zane Grey reflect the popularity of local color writing at the turn of the century and of regional fiction in the 1920s and 1930s. The collections of Benjamin Holt Ticknor, Hiram Haydn, Oscar Williams, and Ken McCormick provide the perspective of literary agents and editors. Works by women range from those of the poet Muriel Rukeyserwho was concerned with the Spanish Civil War, women's rights, and the Vietnam Warto those of novelist-philosopher Ayn Randwho championed individualism, capitalism, and anticommunism. Small but interesting collections exist for the poets

Home James Abbott McNeill Whistler "Whistler was the son of a railway engineer, born in Lowell, Massachusetts, but throughout his life he pretended to be a Southern gentleman. He was, in most imaginable ways, self-invented. Like West "Whistler was accepted by Paris as no American painter before him had been. As a young man, he worked with Gustave Courbet . He enjoyed the respect of Šdouard Manet and Edgar Degas , though the latter sometimes gave him the sharp edge of his tongue - "Visslair, you behave as though you had no talent." He appears (with Baudelaire, Manet, and other luminaries) in Fantin-Latour's group portrait of the rising art stars of 1864, Homage to Delacroix . "This American is a great artist," said Camille Pissarro , "and the only one of whom America can be justly proud." And Marcel Proust would turn part of his name, unpronounceable by the French, into an anagram: he became the painter Elstir in A la recherche A temps perdu "Valparaiso was as close as Whistler ever got to the Orient, but he was seen in France and England as a cultural bridge to Japan. He was obsessed by the formal beauty of Oriental art, especially Japanese prints (which were available by the ream in Paris and London) and Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, of which he amassed a choice collection. Through the study of Japanese concision, he brought an esthetic of hints and nuances into late-nineteenth-century painting. His abhorrence of narrative, his refusal to moralize through art, his preference for the exquisitely designed moment over the slice of life: these were new, and they epitomized the ideal of Art for Art's Sake. It was provocative, in 1871, to call a portrait of his mother

Reviews
The nineteenth century recognized Whistler as the greatest printmaker since Rembrandt, and his etchings can be considered the summit of his artistic achievement. In this beautifully produced book, the first on the subject since the early years of this century, Lochnan discusses Whistler's personal and professional life, analyzes the sources and character of his etching style, and explores the public and critical reception of his work. "Nothing less than a masterpiece. The text of this fully illustrated book is a brilliantly written narrative which traces Whistler's artistic development by putting together, in such a lively way that the reader is compelled to read on, absolutely glued to the page, all the various firsthand accounts of Whistler's etching activities and etchingrelated social behaviour. . . . Rarely, I think, has the art side of art been so graphically presented: this text is a triumph." Andrew Hudson, The Art Post "Here is a firstrate biographical study of absorbing interest. No student of nineteenth century art should miss this absorbing documentation of a man who seems to have set out to upset as many people as possible in the course of making himself one of the most memorable artists of his time."

$how Me The Money
Collection of the Federal Reserve Board, Washington, D.C. Money as a subject continues to capture the imagination of artists at the end of this century as it did at the end of the nineteenth. If art is a manifestation of the culture and society of its time, then the art of our time naturally reflects the pervasiveness of money in our personal and business decisions. Because of the physicality and materiality of currency - freshly minted, aged, or shredded - several artists have chosen to use the currency itself as their medium. Spanning 35 years, this exhibition focuses on 25 artists whose creativity has been captivated by the image and symbolism of money. Despite their use of real U.S. currency, their artwork does not invite confusion because of differences in scale, technique, material and other artistic conventions. The 40 works in this exhibit can be enjoyed for their satirical wit, technical brilliance, and aesthetic beauty. They might even make you laugh. ITINERARY

The Scottish-American History Club Newsletter James McNeill Whistler James McNeill Whistler was one of the most controversial American artists of his time. He added new and restored old dimensions to nineteenth century painting. He was also a witty and caustic writer. He is probably best known for the painting, Portrait of My Mother, which hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 10, 1834. His grandfather, John Whistler, was a Scottish major in the British Army under General Burgoyne. He settled in America after the Revolutionary War. His mother, Anna McNeill, was also descended from early Scottish settlers. Her family had been Stuart supporters and came to America in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden. His father, George Washington Whistler, was a graduate of West Point who once led a surveying team that helped establish the boundaries between the United States and Canada. Whistler spent his boyhood in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his father was working as a railroad engineer. When James was 15, his father died and the family returned to the U.S. He attended West Point Military Academy but left in his third year. In 1855 he left the U.S. for Europe and never returned. He studied in Paris and later was honored by many European art societies.

Mark Harden www.artchive.com James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the American painter and etcher, was born July 10, 1834, in Lowell, MA. His studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point didn't go well and he left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coastal Survey. After a year in its service, he left the United States for Paris where he became a student of Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. This formal education had less influence on his work than his association with French realist Gustave Courbet and other contemporary artists or his independent study of the Masters and Japanese prints. In Paris, Whistler gained recognition as an etcher when his first series
