Education Students Profiles
The California College of Arts and Crafts , with campuses in San Francisco and Oakland, California, educates students interested in crafts, traditional visual arts, film, architecture, illustration, and many design disciplines. CCAC offers graduate programs in design, fine arts, visual criticism, and writing. CCAC connects students to the Bay Area design community. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in internships arranged with local area firms. Students meet a range of working artists as faculty, as visiting artists, or as presenters of CCAC Institute lectures. Through involvement in community projects, they gain collaborative skills that help prepare them for jobs after graduation.
Leslie Becker
Leslie originally studied architecture for two years and then graphic design for three, graduating with a BFA from Cooper Union. She worked in a New York design firm specializing in corporate identity. When she established her own Bay Area practice, she not only provided corporate identity services, but also helped design interiors and custom furniture. Today her practice continues to be highly eclectic , with projects ranging from copywriting, public relations, and graphic design, to signage programs, furniture, interiors, consulting, and writing about design for a variety of publications.

Arts and Crafts
Story by Donna Miles SSGT. Terrance Noel stood at the buffing machine, carefully guiding the gold-colored metal under a jeweler's wheel that polished it to a brilliant sheen. The goggled and masked 3rd Infantry soldier was no stranger to the Arts and Crafts Center at Fort Myer, Va. But unlike many of the center's visitors, who do everything from woodworking to ceramics to auto repair, Noel had business on his mind. A member of "The Old Guard" ceremonial unit, Noel had his hopes set on becoming a guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va. Competition for the assignment is fierce, with the tiniest details ultimately determining who makes it and who doesn't. So Noel, like many other soldiers in his regiment, visits the Arts and Crafts Center about three times every week to use a jeweler's buffing compound to polish his brass until it glistens. In the woodworking room next door, Spec. Brett Leonard and his wife, Sgt. Marianela Leonard, hoped the Fort Myer Arts and Crafts Center would help them bring their own dreams to reality.

"Have nothing in your houses which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful," William Morris declared in 1880. Morris was a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement, which originated in Britain in the late 19th century and soon spread to America. This group of reformers, passionately committed to righting the ills they saw in an increasingly industrialized and urban society, chose the arts as their medium. They were convinced that industrialization had degraded the work process and destroyed the environment, reducing the formerly creative craftsman to an anonymous laborer mindlessly repeating unfulfilling tasks. And they condemned the host of ornate, indiscriminately adopted revival styles - from Louis XIV to the Rococo Revival - that dominated the architecture and decorative arts of the Victorian period.
Morse Museum The collections at the Morse Museum illustrate the goals of the Arts and Crafts movement - the revival of hand craftsmanship, the creation of more satisfying working conditions and the elevation of the decorative arts to the status of fine arts through design unity.

    http://www.yaxte.org/marilyn_eng.htm
MARILYN ANDERSON MAYA ARTS AND CRAFTS OF GUATEMALA From the book: A Note to Children, Parents and Teachers
Traditional crafts are mainly village crafts, done in the home or in small workshops. Often family members, including children, help or watch. Indeed, this is how crafts are transmitted from one generation to the next.
Many Maya craft techniques, such as backstrap-loom weaving, are ancient. And most of the materials used are natural and are found nearby: animal and vegetable fibers, wood, clay and leather. The use of such materials helps the environment; they are biodegradable, renewable, and do not have to be transported long distances.
In addition to their beauty, their social and cultural significance, their economic value and their ecological impact, arts and crafts are important because of the lessons they can teach:
As the drawings and captions of this book suggest, another lesson that can be learned about arts and crafts is their vulnerability. The introduction of new materials and technology, the creation of new markets, the exposure to different cultures, the disruption of society due to civil conflict all present challenges to cultures in which traditional arts and crafts are imbedded. As fewer Maya wear traditional dress and as more of them speak Spanish, as they spend more time working outside their own communities, the transmission of crafts from generation to generation becomes more difficult.

    39. The Holiday Zone: Thanksgiving Arts And Crafts
. teach the vocabulary phrases, What sound does a turkey make? / Aturkey says, 'Gobble, Gobble. Discuss sounds made by other animals.
    http://www.geocities.com/holidayzone/thanks/tgames.html
Gobble, Gobble, Cook Me! This is a Thanksgiving adaptation of Duck, Duck, Goose. Players sit on ground in large circle. One player is chosen as the turkey. The turkey must then select a cook who will try to catch him or her and roast him or her for Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey walks around the circle, patting each student lightly on the head and calling each student either "Gobble" or "Cook me!" As long as the turkey says, "Gobble," he or she is safe. When the turkey calls "Cook me!," however, the player tagged must jump up and chase the turkey around the circle. If the cook catches the turkey, the turkey must go sit in the center of the circle (the roasting pot). If the turkey sits in the cook's spot before the cook tags him or her, the turkey is safe, and the cook becomes the next turkey.
To use this game in an ESL or EFL setting . . .
    • Teach the vocabulary phrases, "What sound does a turkey make?" / "A turkey says, 'Gobble, Gobble." Discuss sounds made by other animals.
    • Explain that in the United States many people cook turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.
    • Teach or review basic game terminology (i.e. Make a circle. Sit down. Eun-soo, you begin. Eun-soo is walking around the circle. Eun-soo is patting Min-kyung on the head. Eun-soo says, "Gobble." Min-kyung was not chosen. Eun-soo is patting Gyu-ri on the head. Eun-soo says, "Cook me!" Eun-soo runs around the circle. Gyu-ri jumps up and chases him. She is not fast enough. Eun-soo sits down in Gyu-ri's spot. Eun-soo is safe. Gyu-ri is now the turkey.)

Arts and Crafts Coloring Pages President Puzzles
    *ideal for preschoolers
Copy silhouettes of Washington and Lincoln onto sheets of cardstock. Give each child a sheet. Let children cut the sheet into 4-12 pieces (depending on ability level), then re-assemble their "puzzle." Make sure child's name is written on the back of each puzzle piece. Encourage children to trade puzzles with a neighbor and put together again. Teach children to identify George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
    Penny Mobile
Cut 6" circles out of brown construction paper. Ask children to decorate one side of the circle like the face of a penny. On the other side, they should write one sentence about Abraham Lincoln's life. After the penny is created, students may punch a hole near the top of the penny, then use a piece of yarn to tie the penny to a clothes hangar. Encourage children to continue making pennies until time is up.
Compare mobiles. Who has the most pennies? Who has the most interesting piece of trivia? What event or events in Lincoln's life did the most people write about?
