About Curacao History Culture Churches Medical Facilities Curacao is a long, arid, and generally flat island, stretching some 40 miles (64 km) from southeast to northwest, at much the same north-south angles as it's sister islands in the ABC group Aruba to the west and Bonaire to the east). The island is about 10 miles (16 km) at it's widest point, and the area is about 180 square miles (472 square km), making it the largest island in the Netherlands Antilles group. The coastline along the south is irregular, peppered with small bays and inlets, including the spectacular bays and beaches at the west end of the island. The largest bays are located along the central-east and east end of the island, where you'll find the capital and major port of Willemstad. Most of Curacao's 170,000 residents live in and around this historic town. The long north coast of the island, buffeted by constant northeast trade winds, is characterized by a rough coasthne, limestone cliff formations set on top of eons-old volcanic rock, and weather-beaten terrain. It is generally less inhabited than the south coast, but you will find smaller villages and many of the island's famous landhuis, or old plantation house, structures here. The west end of the island is also characterized by expansive, hilly terrain, most of it encompassed by

Christopher Columbus landed on the islands in 1493, naming the larger one "Santa Maria de la Antigua." The English colonized the islands in 1632. Sir Christopher Codrington established the first large sugar estate in Antigua in 1674, and leased Barbuda to raise provisions for his plantations. Barbuda's only town is named after him. Codrington and others brought slaves from Africa's west coast to work the plantations.
Antiguan slaves were emancipated in 1834 but remained economically dependent on the plantation owners. Economic opportunities for the new freedmen were limited by a lack of surplus farming land, no access to credit, and an economy built on agriculture rather than manufacturing. Poor labor conditions persisted until 1939, when a member of a royal commission urged the formation of a trade union movement.
Horatio Nelson arrived in 1784 at the head of the Squadron of the Leeward Islands to develop the British naval facilities at English Harbour and to enforce stringent commercial shipping laws. The first of these two tasks resulted in construction of Nelson's Dockyard, one of Antigua's finest physical assets; the second resulted in a rather hostile attitude toward the young captain. Nelson spent almost all of his time in the cramped quarters of his ship, declaring the island to be a "vile place" and a "dreadful hole." Serving under Nelson at the time was the future King William IV, for whom the altogether more pleasant accommodation of Clarence House was built.

THE 17th ANNUAL CONVENTION IN ARUBA
T he Caribbean's Dutch Antilles Islands skillfully advanced their case of having grown the Caribbean's top Carnival before the well traveled group of Carnival connoisseurs at the FECC 1997 Reunion. This Carnival City Federation is the world's leading organization devoted to promoting the recognition of the intrinsic cultural heritage of Carnival celebrations. While the letters stand for Foundation of European Carnival Cities, the organization has many active members in the Americas and plans for many more. The Aruba Carnival organization with help from its tourist authorities hosted the 17 th annual gathering and third FECC- America meeting in April at its beautiful, beachside Holiday Inn resort and casino. FECC President Henry van der Kroon of Holland is a great man of boundless energy, who has nurtured the organization since its inception in 1981 when 17 representatives from the nations of Holland, Belgium and Greece met at Patras Greece. Today there are 48 member countries and many more Carnival Cities and organizations who belong. Both the President and Carnival love pomp and ceremony and the FECC (called "fete" for short) often watches its President awards medallions to heads of state, Carnival dignitaries and each other. This honor is then followed by the three fete cheers; "Yasou, Yasou, Yasou!

Visit Aruba for Windswept Beaches and Colorful Carnival
Arubaisland of beaches, windsurfing, carnival, and fun. Aruba is a member of the Dutch Windward Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), popularly known as the ABC Islands, and, like its sister islands, is distinguished by a unique and dramatic landscape. The interior of Aruba has scant vegetation and is an arid desert landscape spotted with scruffy foliage, cacti, wind-bent divi-divi trees, and tiny red flowers called fioritas in the local creole of Papiamento (derived from Dutch, Spanish, and African languages). Huge boulders, caves, and a dusty terrain add to the dramatic nature of the interior. This sunny island is cooled by refreshing trade winds that sweep the coasts. It is Aruba's coast, after all, that draws visitors year after year. Of the three ABC Islands, Aruba boasts the best beaches by far, all of which are open to the public free of charge. Long, sandy beaches line all sides of the island, and play host to Aruba's most popular watersport: windsurfing. North of Aruba's capital of Oranjestad lies the main resort area on the island. Druif Beach begins near the Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort, widening along the coast as it nears the Divi Aruba Resort. Here is found some of the best windsurfing on the western side of the island, and most of these resorts also offer windsurfing rentals and lessons. At the northernmost tip of Aruba is an area of very shallow waters with no hotels to break the wind, and this is the best spot for fast windsurfing. Windsurfers from all over the world come here for sport and competition, and professionals often come to northern Aruba for photo sessions. Although windsurfing speeds are high here and there is an extremely strong offshore wind, the sport can be undertaken quite safely, as there are several rescue boats on hand should the wind carry you off to Panama!

LOCATION Bonaire is one of the ABC islands aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao and islocated outside the hurricane belt 50 miles north of Venezuela and 86 miles
http://www.bonbini.com/culture.html
Bonaire is the least developed and until recently the lessor known of the ABC-islands. Over the past two decades Bonaire's reputation has spread far and wide as an "out-of-the-way", arid, friendly, sunny island that has dynamic coral reefs within a short swim of the coral rock shoreline. Bonaire's coral reefs are regularly ranked among the top 10 of the world's dive destinations. The "Flamingo Island" has an unspoiled scenery which is exemplified in the "Washington Slagbaai National Park", covering about one fifth of the island. Klein, "Little Bonaire", is nestled in the bosom of the "boomerang" shaped Bonaire and not only creates a natural barrier reef effect, but offers excellent snorkeling and diving as well as one of the most beatiful beaches you can imagine. LOCATION - Bonaire is one of the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao and is located outside the hurricane belt 50 miles north of Venezuela and 86 miles east of Aruba. TIME ZONE - Antlantic Standard Time (AST) November to March: Eastern Standard Time April to September.

Introduction
The Caribbean island nation of Aruba is a small jewel in the aquamarine sea that surrounds the islands of the Caribbean. It is 30km (19.6 miles) long and 9km (6 miles) across at its widest point. The waves off the windward east coast crash against cliffs, carving high, arched coral bridges and deep dark, limestone grottoes. This coast is desolate, windswept with rocks carved into weird shapes by the pounding surf. In contrast on the western shores the beaches are soft, white and fringed with palm trees, sloping towards the calm transparent turquoise of the Caribbean. Between these two extremes is a desert landscape where cacti grow to the height of a man and huge tumbles of boulders dot the area. Winding roads lead to rocky passes and hidden coves, or even to nowhere at all. Giant green parakeets call to their mates and other tropical birds flash their brilliant colors against the deep blue of the Caribbean sky. Perpetual trade winds have made Aruba the world's leading area for windsurfing. These winds also created the famous divi-divi trees, which have been wind twisted into natural art that always point west.

Geography Aruba is a small island covering 75 square miles and located in the Caribbean sea 19 miles north of Venezuela. The capital is Oranjestad. The climate of Aruba is tropical with a fairly constant average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and rainfall averaging 18-24 inches per annum, most of which falls between the months of October to January. The island lies outside the hurricane belt and so avoids the effects of tropical storms. The terrain is flat with few hills and sparse vegetation and the highest point lies 188 meters above sea level. Air communications are excellent with over 200 flights a week and daily flights to major cities in Europe, the United States and Latin America. Telecommunications and computer networking facilities are the most advanced and well developed in the region. Aruba is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (US Central Time).

Aruba is an island of the Lesser Antilles, located in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela. The island belongs to the Netherlands and is administered as the Netherlands Antilles. Aruba is a rather small island, about 19 miles long (30 kilometers) and 5 miles wide (8 kilometers) with a total area of about 75 square miles (193 square kilometers). Aruba's climate is delightful and nearly constant. Throughout the year temperatures average between 85 and 95 degrees F (29 and 35 degrees C) during the day and 75 to 85 degrees F (24 and 29 degrees C) at night. The tradewinds blow consistently between 10 and 20 mph (16 and 32 kph). Aruba does not have a rainy season; occasional showers, usually of short duration occur from mid October to November. Although showers do occur during other months, they are less frequent. Slightly over 67,000 people live year-round in Aruba. Most speak Dutch, the official language, although English, Spanish, and Papiamento, a mixture of mostly Dutch, English, Spanish and Portuguese, are widely spoken. The ethnic breakdown of the population is mixed European and Caribbean Indians (which make up about 80% of Aruba's people). Roman Catholicism is the predominate religion, with Protestants making up about 8% of the religious population with smaller percentages of Hindus, Muslims, and Jews. The island's health care and educational systems are of high quality. The principal town, Oranjestad, located at the west end of the island, is also the capital city.
