Asian-American Arts and Museums
Guide picks Here are links to museums and other collections in the U.S. with a focus on Asian and Asian-American culture featuring objects d'arte and other exhibits to help one learn more about their roots.
Located in San Francisco, California, this event took place between September 11-30, 2000 and is Bay Area's first and only arts exposition for emerging artists of Asian descent. As the diversity of Asian-America itself includes the fourth generation, hapas and parachute kids, so do Asian-American arts run the gamut from happily subversive to erotically outrageous and angrily contemplative. Asian / Asian American Music
Introduction
Note: This site is constantly being updated, especially the calendar of events... Latest changes: added a new log page, started a new article excerpt page (SEE "Print of Note #11), and started a new page of short reviews (SEE "Short reviews2".]
Site coverage: contemporary music by Asian Americans (and Asian Canadians)... also contemporary music influenced by Asia.
As a collector of Asian American recordings (lp's, cassettes, cd's) I had the opportunity to play some of this music on my Asian American radio show, "Gold Mountain." For many years, the magazine-like program aired on WPFW 89.3 FM, the DC community station owned by Pacifica. ( In recent years, Pacifica station programming and the national management structure has experienced much turmoil. For more info. check Save Pacifica and Current public broadcasting news.) Eventually I hope to explore the notions of Asian American music what it might be, whether there is a viable "Asian American aesthetic", and how it fits into the musical categories one runs into. Note that some of the music I've reviewed might be considered "Asian" as opposed to "Asian American", but don't let that hinder your appreciation of the music.

We wish, however, that we could forecast a year of true happiness as the clouds of war threaten to obscure our sense of humanity. Of course, this is what is making our current work all the more urgent. Nearly two years ago Asian Improv made a general shift in our direction. Throughout the dozen or so years of our work our goal was to promote "New Directions in Music by Asian Americans." We spent this period of time investing in the professional development of Asian American musician/composers as a way to build awareness of our contributions to the world of music. While we still cherish this goal, we have made a choice to place our work more clearly in the context of community development. What this has meant is strengthening our role as a community-based presenter of multiple artistic disciplines and placing an emphasis on role of art in education and community building. Asian American Media Arts Forum
The year 2000 marked the 30th anniversary of Visual Communications, the 24th anniversary of Asian Cine Vision, and the 20th anniversary of NAATA, the National Asian American Telecommunications Association. Since the humble beginnings of the Asian American media arts movement in the 1970s, there has always been a spirit of adventure, a dedication to telling the untold stories, and a commitment to a larger social vision. The Asian American media arts field is certainly different today with a multitude of talented producers and new communities to serve. At the same time, the challenges we encountered yesteryear are still facing us today - a lack of funding to create work and limited resources for distribution on television and in theaters.
