AWARE Fact Sheet:
Police Mug Files on People of Color
The Alliance Working for Asian Rights and Empowerment (AWARE) was formed in September, 1993 as a grassroots, community support and advocacy group for Asians and Pacific Islanders in Orange County. It is the successor group to the Fountain Valley Youth All iance, which fought against Asian mug files in Fountain Valley. Fueled by anti-immigrant sentiment and gang hysteria, in cities all over California, including Garden Grove, Fountain Valley, Westminster, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Santa Ana, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Orange, Fullerton, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, and Los Alamitos, and across the U.S., police are believed to be stopping young Asians and other people of color and/or taking their photos, just because of their age, color, and hip-hop clothing.
  • In the summer of 1992, eight Asian youths having a barbecue at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach are rounded up by police and individually and collectively photographed, just because of an earlier, unrelated incident involving some other Asians in the park.
  • In January 1993, police raid the Kanshige family residence in Fountain Valley, looking for son Mark, having misidentified him as a attempted murder suspect from a photo dossier. Police handcuff parents and children, forcing them outdoors while ransacking the house for evidence they could not find. After spending six months in jail, Mark is found innocent by a jury.

There's been steady media coverage both in the Korean-language news outlets and Asian American media. AsianWeek featured KACR and our campaign as a cover story "Straight From the Church: How Korean American churches in California rallied against gay rights" (January 20, 2000), and a reporter with A Magazine is currently writing a story on the rise of Asian American faith-based communities, and the significance of the emerging religious right in the Korean American community, in particular. Several interviews and opinion pieces have appeared in the Korean-language papers in the last couple of weeks, and a couple of others are in the works. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Times has not covered the story.
In addition to media interest, other activists and community organizers are showing an interest in KACR's campaign. We were a topic for discussion at a newly-formed queer and queer-friendly Korean women's group in Boston, and on March 4, 2000, at a Washington DC conference organized by the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) and Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL), I'll be on a panel of grassroots community organizers.

The first fundraising campaign initiated before Christmas 2002 raised over $5000.00 for Justice for New Americans.
Current projects included the recruiting of pro-bono lawyers for a Case Review Committee. There is a special Wen Ho Lee Documentation Project Committee, along with a news footage collection group. They are also looking for volunteer web designers to help keep the online information up-to-date and accessible. For interested persons not living in the San Francisco area, work can be done via email, and with stuffing envelopes.
It was three years ago on December 10, 1999, that the federal government indicted Dr. Wen Ho Lee with 59 counts of felony charges. He suffered nine months of pre-trial solitary confinement in shackles and chains.
Justice for New Americans will give the much needed organizational support to immigrant citizens, to broaden individual capacities for understanding and sustaining our own civil rights, especially during times of national crisis.

Then these six organizations stated: "we believe that the public's confidence in government agencies to conduct fair and competent investigations has been undermined in the past year." Vincent Chin and the Asian American Civil Rights Movement A young Chinese American engaged to be married, Vincent Chin was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat by two Detroit auto workers, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz, in the summer of 1982. With the American auto industry in the midst of a recession caused in part by the popularity of Japanese imports, Ebens and Nitzapparently having mistaken Chin to be Japanesereleased their anger and frustration in this deadly assault. Both pled guilty to manslaughter. Yet despite the savage nature of the crime, Ebens and Nitz only received sentences of three years probation with $3780 in assorted fines and court fees. Outraged at the injustice of this lenient verdict, Asian Americans around the United States joined together in protest, as the Chin case mobilized increasing numbers of people and organizations to take stronger action against incidents of anti-Asian violence.

NATIONAL JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE, OLDEST ASIAN AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION, DONATES ARCHIVES TO JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM LOS ANGELES.-The National Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights and human rights organization in the country, announced that its National Board voted to donate its archives to the Japanese American National Museum, whose collection of material culture documenting the Japanese American experience is the largest in the world. The JACL was founded in 1929, partly in response to anti-Japanese sentiment in America. At various times in the next 70 years, it lobbied Congress to either repeal discriminatory laws or to pass bills to correct historic wrongs. For example, the JACL led efforts to pass the McCarran-Walter Act in 1952, which finally allowed immigrants from Asia to become naturalized U.S. citizens. In the 1980s, the JACL was among several groups that advocated for redress for Japanese Americans for their unlawful incarceration during World War II. The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 provided an official apology and individual reparations for eligible recipients. The Japanese American National Museum's mission is to promote understanding and appreciation for America's ethnic and cultural diversity by preserving and telling the story of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Founded in 1985, the National Museum opened the doors to its Historic Building in 1992 and completed a $45 million project by opening its 85,000-square-foot Pavilion in 1999.

It continues a tradition dating from the of workers fighting for justice in the sugar plantations of Hawaii, the factories of Alaska, and the railroad and agricultural camps of the western United States. This struggle continues today, as Asian Pacific American workers, many of them immigrants, strive to achieve the American dream in the face of unsafe and exploitative workplace conditions. More than half a million Asian Pacific American workers have joined unions, seeking better pay, improved benefits, dignity on the job, and a voice in the work place. On May 1, 1992, hundreds of Asian Pacific American union activists and their supporters joined together to form APALA APA community , in the media, and in the national public policy arena.
