To serve the Asian hotel industry better Nitish S Rele in Tampa, Florida This group represents about 65 per cent of the economy lodging properties in the United States and nearly 40 per cent of all hotel properties. Founded in Atlanta in 1989, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association represents more than 7,000 members who together own about 18,000 hotels, one million rooms and commands a market value of almost $ 40 billion. "Today, AAHOA is a major force in the hospitality industry through our innovative programs of assistance, education and advocacy," said Bakulesh "Buggsi" Patel, its new chairman and the president of Buggsi Hospitality Group, based in Lake Oswego, Oregon. With the impressive statistics mentioned earlier, Patel feels that AAHOA members need to make sure that their voice is heard on the hill. "We want to be in the forefront, fighting the cause," he said. Among some of the issues on the new chairman's agenda are fair franchising, immigration, government relations, e-commerce and member services. "Slowly, we are becoming aware of who we are, and so we need to cultivate that into a powerful force," he said. "E-commerce plays an important role today. We want to bring our membership into the technology age by providing them with good Web accessibility."

Week In Review
The Crimson Clamps A recent article in the Harvard Crimson’s weekly magazine Fifteen Minutes has incited the anger of the school’s Asian community and the weakness of the paper’s editorial board. Justin “Juice” Fong’s “The Invasion” accused Asian Harvard students of self-segregation and the perpertuation of “hurtful stereotypes,” according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Fong, himself an Asian-American, also wrote that Harvard’s Asian women are “sex fiends” and it’s Asian men “flaccid.” Fong maintains he was aiming for humor and gentle prodding; for its part, the Crimson editorial board “regrets this piece was not edited more judiciously” and believes that the offending phrases “should have been cut.” Fong considers the piece to be along the lines of an op-ed, not to be held to the standards of a news article. “My piece was in no way journalistic,” he told the Chronicle. “It was a piece of mind…. It did not include facts and reporting.” Just Eat Catastrophe was narrowly averted at Wellesley College on April 2nd. Members of Sisters Leading Action for Multiculturalism (SLAM) had pledged to go on a hunger strike that would have begun at 9 A.M. on Wednesday, April 4, if the college did not provide more full-time cultural advisors to the Wellesley community.

    SECTION 17: COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
Juliet E. Walker , The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign THE SECTION The rise of the United States as a world power after the Civil War and the economic growth of the Midwest were closely linked, for the country’s industrial revolution was centered in the region. Located between mineral- and ore-rich western Pennsylvania and Minnesota's Mesabi Range, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin had become the nation's leading industrial and manufacturing centers by the late nineteenth century. The Midwest was home to a significant number of the nation’s largest business enterprises and to Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, two of America’s early leading industrialists. The Commerce and Industry section of the Encyclopedia will focus on Midwestern business and industry, emphasizing their contributions to the economic development of the region and the nation. Starting with the Cyrus H. McCormick grain reaper , and soon followed by several other important producers of farm machinery, the manufacturing of agricultural machines became the Midwest's first important industry. Together, they have sustained the Midwest as the world's leader in the manufacture of farm equipment. It was, however, the
