TITLE: Discrimination against Asian-Americans in Higher
Education: Evidence, Causes, and Cures.
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1988
NOTE: 19 p.; Remarks presented at the Symposium on Asian
American University Admissions (Washington, DC, November 30,
ABSTRACT: The issue of discrimination against Asian
Americans in higher education is discussed. The focus is on:
whether certain of the country's most prestigious
universities discriminate against Asian-American applicants;
why this occurs; and what university officials, executive branch administrators, and members of Congress can do about it. Suspicions arise because university admissions committees tend to be extremely vague about the impact of race on their acceptance/rejection decisions. Though minority status can add 40 to 50 percentage points to an applicant's chance of admission, such racial preferences generally do not operate in favor of Asian-Americans and are often quite the opposite. Statistical evidence shows these

Council for Asian American Studies Education
Organizational Profile
CAASE aims to support all efforts to provide multicultural and ethnic studies education in American schools. Since these efforts are frequently short-handed, CAASE deploys the talents and experiences of its members nationwide to augment local organizing and research. The creation of the CAASE website in 1998 is intended to ensure continuity in the collective experience of CAASE's advocacy. CAASE voted in 1993 to establish a high school examination in Asian American Studies. The first examination, in March 1995, invited students at 1,100 of the nation's best high schools to compete for scholarships and other prizes. Through its programs, publications, and advocacy, CAASE promotes the belief that awareness of the relevance and significance of ethnic minorities in American history and culture, formally and universally established by education, is the most secure defense against racism.

M W or T Th, 1:30- 3:18 (contact Rick Livingston for important information) Instructor: Prof. Rick Livingston This course provides an introduction to South Asia by examining some of the most influential ways the region has been imagined. How do discourses of geography, religion, history and culture help to construct "ideas of India"? What is the relation between these Indias of the mind and real-life projects of empire, nation-building and identity-formation? How do ideas of India serve to maintain communities and identities among South Asians abroad? While focusing primarily on contemporary India, we will examine how different versions of a collective past have produced differing understandings of South Asian modernity. Asian Americans represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Embracing the diverse national backgrounds and unique cultural heritage of Asian Americans presents exciting opportunities for American Protestantism. The positive contributions of Asian American Christians are being felt in local churches, seminaries, presbyteries, and other church bodies nationwide. There is a growing need to understand the complex dynamics of Asian American churches, to recruit gifted Asian American students to careers in ministry, and to provide continuing education opportunities to support Asian American pastors, educators, and laity in their work for Christ. The Asian American Ministry and Missions Center at Union-PSCE has been established to assist in the education of Asian American church leaders. Recruitment
Encouraging gifted Asian Americans to consider careers in pastoral ministry and Christian education, and nurturing them during their schooling, is an important goal of the Center. It is imperative that Asian American churches attract and train leaders who are equipped to minister to second- and third-generation Asian Americans. At Union-PSCE, these students may enroll in a variety of degree programs to train leaders for the church. These include:

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , Asians and Pacific Islanders make up the fastest growing racial group in the United States, numbering more than 10 million people, or nearly 4 percent of the total population. The diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander American population includes members of more than 30 ethnic groups who speak more than 300 languages and dialects. "Emerging Together" is the national theme for this year's Asian Pacific American Heritage Month , a time to honor the contributions, heritage, and traditions of Asians and Pacific Islanders. One of the reasons May was chosen for this celebration was to pay tribute to the first Japanese immigrants, who came to the United States in May 1843.
