The Program
The intercollegiate Asian American Studies program offers intellectually challenging, emotionally engaging, and locally grounded opportunities to study the voices, contemporary issues, historical experiences, and contributions of diverse Asian communities in the US. By drawing on shared commitments of faculty, staff, and students from each college within the University, the program provides rich, interdisciplinary approaches in teaching and research with dynamic linkages to local communities and supportive learning environments for students of all backgrounds. The program enables students to develop critical thinking skills, competencies, and sensibilities to understand, contribute to and thrive in a culturally diverse world, with particular attention to urban populations, institutions, and environments. The program strives to integrate culturally-responsive instruction in the classroom with holistic practices of mentoring, community-building, and advocacy to address the social and academic needs of students The program collaborates closely with the University's Institute for Asian American Studies (IAAS) in relation to new course development, ongoing research and service learning opportunities, speakers and special events, publications, and graduate/undergraduate student support.

"The Other Asian": Linguistic, Ethnic and Cultural Stereotypes at an After-school Asian American Teen Videomaking Project
This dissertation is a four-year ethnographic study that closely examines the relationship between language and identity among 1.5- and second-generation Southeast Asian American teenagers. These teens, referred to as "the other Asian" by one participant, are engaged in the cultural production of a 15-minute video at an after-school videomaking project in an Asian American community arts organization. Drawing on a theoretical foundation that combines linguistic anthropology, Asian American studies and education, I explore the ways in which these teens, who are primarily Cambodian, Vietnamese, Lao and ethnic-Chinese, draw on and play with circulating stereotypes of the self and other

Parents group helps to bridge gaps between culture, schools Organization started in Cupertino, hopes to spread to Saratoga By Michelle Alaimo A parent group that works closely with schools in Cupertino is hoping to spread its roots into Saratoga schools. Members of the Asian American Parent Association say they have decided they'd like to work more closely with schools in this area after reading a newspaper article last year about tension among Asian students at Saratoga High School. AAPA held a seminar on safe schools and a safe community in late February at the Saratoga Community Library and Jeff Moe, president of AAPA, said the group received a good turnout. Flyers were sent home with each SHS student for the event featuring speakers Tom Sing, assistant sheriff for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department and attorney Tony Christensen. Moe said the seminar was a good way to explain to parents what their childrens' rights are in the event they ever get into some kind of legal trouble. He added that parent education seminars are just one way that AAPA reaches out to the community.

The Asian American Civic Association (A.A.C.A.), formerly known as the Chinese American Civic Association, has been active in Boston's Asian community over 30 years. The past two decades has seen vast growth in the Asian community and AACA has also grown in order to meet the community's changing needs. AACA was born in 1967 as an organization to meet the social and cultural needs of first and second generation Chinese Americans. In the early 1970's, it became the major social planning and cultural advocacy agency in Chinatown, out of which evolved the South Cove Community Health Center and the Chinese Golden Age Center, as well as AACA's present existing programs. In 1979, AACA increased its commitment to include refugees froim Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In 1982, the agency expanded to include prevocational skills training for immigrants and refugees. In 1984, AACA also expanded its services to include vocational training. In 1988, the agency inaugurated workplace education programs for newcomers in the workforce. In 1991, an External Diploma Program was offered as alternative remedial high school education.
The primary mission of the Asian American Civic Association is to provide limited-English speaking and economically-disadvantaged Asian adults and youth with programs and services to develop the survival, literacy and employment skills needed to gain durable economic independence. Providing the right tools to these linguistic minorities will strengthen their ability to undertake their responsibilities in the larger community. This will in turn enable them to realize their potentials as contributing family members, productive workers and participating citizens.
