June 21, 2000
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT AT CEREMONY HONORING ASIAN AMERICAN MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS
South Lawn Pavilion 4:45 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Chaplain Hicks; distinguished members of the Senate and the House who are here in large numbers; Secretary and Mrs. Cohen; Secretary and Mrs. West; Secretary Shalala; other members of the administration who are here, I thank all of you for being here on this profoundly important day. In early 1945, a young Japanese American of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team lay dead on a hill in southern France the casualty of fierce fighting with the Germans. A chaplain went up to pray over him, to bless him, to bring him back down. As the Chaplain later said, "I found a letter in his pocket. The soldier had just learned that some vandals in California had burned down his father's home and barn in the name of patriotism. And yet, this young man had volunteered for every patrol he could go on." In a few moments I will ask the military aides to read individual citations, detailing the extraordinary bravery of 22 Asian American soldiers some still with us, some to be represented by family members. We recognize them today with our nation's highest military honor, the Medal of Honor. They risked their lives, above and beyond the call of duty. And in so doing, they did more than defend America; in the face of painful prejudice, they helped to define America at its best.

Campus Events to Commemorate
Japanese American Internment
(February 14, 2000)
n February 1942, thousands of Americans were ordered from their homes and into concentration camps because of their Japanese ancestry. Nearly 60 years later, many people still don't know about this episode - arguably one of the darkest periods in America's past. "It's still one of the greatest secrets in our national history," says Roger Buckley, director of the Asian American Studies Institute and a professor of history. "Here's something that occurred in this century, and a great many people don't know about it." To commemorate Japanese American internment and educate people about it, the National Day of Remembrance is observed on Feb. 19. It was on that date in 1942 that President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which led to the removal of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry from the west coast and their detention in concentration camps between 1942 and 1946. Japanese Americans were given 48 hours to leave their homes, taking only what they could carry, Buckley says. In the process, they left behind businesses, homes and loved ones.

A congressman who heads a homeland security subcommittee said on a radio call-in program that he agreed with the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., made the remark Tuesday on WKZL-FM when a caller suggested Arabs in the United States should be confined. Another congressman who was interned as a child criticized Coble for the comment, as did advocacy groups. Us and Them Divisive Approach to Terrorism Threatens Human Rights Agenda by dharushana muthulingam
But at what point is it a united community, and at what point is it one mob pitted against another?
But does it just as easily work in reverse? New York City Mayor Giuliani, greatly lauded for his leadership during the crisis, nonetheless incites anxiety in his October 1 speech to the United Nations.
Is this also extremist, unreasonable, shocking?
The US thus far, as any self perpetuating entity, has acted in its own interest. It decried human rights violations and yet sold land mines to the violators.
Many fear the Sri Lankan government will use the recent attacks and antiterrorist sentiment to perpetuate its human rights violations with more monetary support as than ever more.
