UCI Main Page Message from the Director W elcome to the Department of Asian American Studies at UC Irvine. Asian American Studies was established as an interdisciplinary program at UCI in 1991. Our program has expanded tremendously over the past decade and we now have nine core faculty and ten affiliated faculty across campus. Our faculty belong to Humanities, Social Sciences, Social Ecology and Arts disciplines. W e offer a graduate emphasis, and an undergraduate major and minor in Asian American Studies. Our program now offers more than thirty courses annually with an enrollment of over two thousand students. Strong student interest is demonstrated in large enrollments in courses such as Asian American Cultures, Asian American Women, Asian Immigrants and Refugees in Orange County, Vietnamese American Experience, Chinatowns in the United States, among others. Susan Murphy, Cornell University vice president for student and academic affairs, has announced that a task force has been formed to address issues confronting Cornell's Asian and Asian-American student community. Murphy said the task force was established in response to the need for a campuswide approach to address campus climate, services and program issues as they relate to Cornell's Asian and Asian-American community. She noted that students of Asian descent comprise the largest single community of color at Cornell, at 14 percent of the total student body, 16 percent of all undergraduates and 55 percent of all international students. Any improvement in the well-being for this community will likely improve the campus climate for the university at large, she said. Murphy explained that the term "Asian and Asian-American" encompasses a diverse array of groups and individuals, differing in such characteristics as ethnicity, generational status and socioeconomic background. At Cornell, she added, the Office of Minority Educational Affairs (OMEA) has identified at least 26 different Asian ethnic groups in its 2001-2002 survey of incoming first-year students. "Even though there are such important distinctions and differences among members of Cornell's Asian and Asian-American community, our students, faculty and staff have identified a number of common issues confronting them," Murphy said. "These include an apparently disproportionate number of suicides by students of Asian descent; bias-related incidents; survey results showing a higher level of dissatisfaction with certain aspects of their Cornell experience among Asian and Asian-American graduating seniors; a relative under-representation among university staff and faculty of persons of Asian descent; and under-utilization by this community of existing mental health resources on campus."

Ethnic Studies The Ethnic Studies major is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts program designed to enhance students' understanding and awareness of race and ethnicity in the United States. The major focuses on racial and ethnic groups from a historical, symbolic, and contemporary perspective, expanding the students' understandin of American life. Sciences and pseudo-sciences of the Lunar New Year By Thinh Tran, contributing science writer The Lunar New Year as the celebration of a new life To know why the Lunar New Year is so important we have to talk a little bit about the underlying philosophy that has dominated east Asia for several thousand years, namely the philosophy of Universal Oneness. This philosophy, interestingly, is highly compatible with modern science because it implies that everything in the universe obeys the same set of laws. The method, then, is to observe the manifestations of these laws through Nature, try to understand them, and apply them to our own lives. In summary, the Lunar New Year symbolizes birth, rebirth, resurrection, revival; in other words, a grand new beginning, with the greatest hope of all hopes, the greatest potential of all potentials. It is only fitting that the Lunar New Year is celebrated in a big big way. The Lunar New Year and Chinese Astrology The brand of fortune telling most popular in countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year is Chinese astrology. Because of the intimate connection between the Lunar New Year and fortune telling, it is not an exaggeration to say that one can never appreciate the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year unless one understands the philosophy behind Chinese astrology. The significance of the Chinese 12-animal zodiac Although it may be correct to say that Chinese astrology is not a science, most people who condemn Chinese astrology forget that it is only one application of a philosophical system, which may be scientific. The philosophical system that governs Chinese astrology is based on two theories: Yin-Yang and Five Substance. I will return to these theories in the future to show why they are as scientific as any other scientific theory; but for this particular Lunar New Year edition, I hope the reader will allow me to skip over this detail.

Visitors to one of the annual Festival of American Folklife presentations had an opportunity to learn about conservation of traditional crafts, including Hmong embroidery. As a public trust, the Smithsonian is fully committed to reflecting and serving this nation's diverse and changing society. The Institution attempts to fulfill this goal by embracing the many social and cultural threads that comprise the tapestry of American life and making these resources widely accessible. Asian Pacific Americans constitute the fastest growing racial group in the United States, numbering 9.76 million people, or 3.7 percent of the nation's population, in 1995. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, current trends indicate that, by the year 2050, 10 percent of Americans will trace their roots back to the region that extends from the South Asian peninsula through East Asia to the archipelagos of the South Pacific and Hawaii. This rapid increase is primarily due to immigration, with Asians and Pacific Islanders accounting for 36 percent of this country's newcomers. Although widely perceived as a single, homogeneous group, Asian Pacific Americans represent more than 24 ethnic groups, who speak a wide array of languages and dialects. Many are recent newcomers to the United States, while other Asian Pacific American families have lived for as many as six generations in this country. Still others, however, are indigenous peoples of the Pacific, including Native Hawaiians, Samoans and Chamorros. These ethnic, religious and historical differences among Asian Pacific Americans pose special challenges to those who seek to study, preserve and share their experiences.

This course offers an overview of the Japanese American experience in the United States from 1880 to today. What helped shape this experience and provides its salient characteristics?
