Core Curriculum (Revised 2/2003)
7. United States Context
(3 semester hours). Courses fulfilling the United States Context requirement explore important aspects of American culture and society. They stimulate critical thinking and an awareness of the place of the United States in the world by promoting an understanding of the particular world views which the diversity, environment, culture, history, values, and expression of the United States have fostered. Courses familiarize students with the United States and enable them to evaluate it critically.
These courses teach an appreciation of American culture while inviting students to ask probing questions about American values and ideals. How have Americans derived a sense of identity from geography, language, politics, and the arts? How do Americans view and influence the world beyond their borders? How have the rights and responsibilities of citizenship changed over time? How have Americans dealt with opposing values in their culture? Completing this requirement, students will develop both a better understanding of the American present and past, and a considerable interest in the American future.
This 3-hour requirement may be fulfilled by passing any course listed below.

ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES MINOR Asian American Studies is an interdisciplinary and comparative field of study that examines the culture, history, experiences, concerns, and contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans and their communities. It focuses on the American experience of persons from Asian countries of the Pacific Rim and the Pacific Islands, and maintains its relationship with the Asian American community and the broader society. In Asian American Studies, students learn to document and interpret the historical and contemporary experiences, cultural constructions, and societal contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans from the perspectives of different disciplines representing the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, law, and the health-related professions. The production of knowledge and distribution of power in relation to questions of cultural and multicultural identities and values among the diverse Asian/Pacific American population are also central to Asian American Studies. Research in Asian American Studies is conducted within a comparative framework that seeks to draw distinctions and point out similarities and differences among the histories and cultures of the various Asian American population groups and, moreover, clarify their integral role in American history and culture. The minor in Asian American Studies requires 25 credit hours and will draw upon coursework in several departments and colleges. One core course, either Comparative Studies 241 Introduction to Asian American Studies, History 346 Introduction to Asian American History, or Sociology 382 Sociology of Asian American Life, is required. Three additional courses (15 credits) are to be taken in Asian American Studies, including at least 5 in humanities and 5 in the social sciences. One additional elective course (5 credits) is to be chosen from one of the following areas: Asian languages, cultures or histories; other minority studies; or independent research or field work.

GOLDSEA CAREER CENTER Smart Majors for the Next Decade
To hitch your career to the hottest growth fields of the next decade, look into these majors.
by Lance Fujieki
"No other majors will put you on the inside track for as many perennially lucrative careers in virtually every growth fields." eems like everyone starts college as a pre-med, pre-law or pre-MBA. Booooring! Also not very smart, judging by all the med-school dropouts backpacking in the Honduras, lawyers selling shoes and MBAs doing phone sales. Part of the problem is that parents and college-bound kids are clueless when it comes to what will pull in the big bucks in the years to come while letting you have a life in your prime. The following list will get you started exploring the smartest alternatives to the doctor-lawyer-indian chief scenario.
1. Mathematics/Statistics
No other majors will put you on the inside track for as many perennially lucrative careers in virtually every growth fields. Investment analyst, cryptologist, market research analyst, computer programmer, budget analyst and information scientist are just a few of the dozens of math careers perpetually begging for qualified applicants, especially those with a native proficiency in English. The demand is expected to grow well past the coming decade.

Asian-American Studies examines the needs, conditions and contributions of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, and Asian Indians to the United States. This department explores the hitherto neglected aspects of the social, political, economic, and cultural factors of Asians in America. In doing so, the program addresses common experiences of immigration, race relations, community development, traditional values, U.S. policies, and issues of adoption within a complex society.
