at the Smithsonian This brochure was published by the Smithsonian's Office of Public Affairs , April 1997.
Visitors to one of the annual Festival of American Folklife presentations had an opportunity to learn about conservation of traditional crafts, including Hmong embroidery.
As a public trust, the Smithsonian is fully committed to reflecting and serving this nation's diverse and changing society. The Institution attempts to fulfill this goal by embracing the many social and cultural threads that comprise the tapestry of American life and making these resources widely accessible. Asian Pacific Americans constitute the fastest growing racial group in the United States, numbering 9.76 million people, or 3.7 percent of the nation's population, in 1995. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, current trends indicate that, by the year 2050, 10 percent of Americans will trace their roots back to the region that extends from the South Asian peninsula through East Asia to the archipelagos of the South Pacific and Hawaii. This rapid increase is primarily due to immigration, with Asians and Pacific Islanders accounting for 36 percent of this country's newcomers. Although widely perceived as a single, homogeneous group, Asian Pacific Americans represent more than 24 ethnic groups, who speak a wide array of languages and dialects. Many are recent newcomers to the United States, while other Asian Pacific American families have lived for as many as six generations in this country. Still others, however, are indigenous peoples of the Pacific, including Native Hawaiians, Samoans and Chamorros. These ethnic, religious and historical differences among Asian Pacific Americans pose special challenges to those who seek to study, preserve and share their experiences.

Children’s Books Rapid and extensive demographic changes now occurring on community, state, national and global levels present the individual educator with profound professional challenges. If teachers are to create learning environments responsive to a culturally diverse student population, we must examine and expand our personal understanding of what culture is and our awareness of the kind of learning which occurs for every child within her/his home-culture. We must also deepen and extend our knowledge about the values, history, beliefs, customs and accomplishments of the many cultural groups, which form our school communities. The following general resources provide a starting place for teachers in this personal and professional endeavor. . Books: Celebrating Pluralism - Art, Education, and Cultural Diversity

The Schools for a New Millennium Project This project brings together high school teachers from McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona, and faculty from Arizona State University to create a history curriculum that incorporates minority history into American history courses at McClintock. In addition to traditional sources that often exclude these histories, the participants examined oral histories, monographs, local history centers and museums, and Internet sites. The project was funded by the Schools for a New Millennium Project of the National Endowment for the Humanities Over the course of this project, faculty from the departments of History, Anthropology, and Southeast Asian Studies conducted workshops on Native American history, African American history, the history of immigration, Hispanic American history, and Asian American history. Each workshop highlighted major themes and discussed the print, video, and electronic resources available to high school teachers. We have shared the resources we identified on the web page. Before consulting them, however, you might want to consider some of the themes that recurred in our discussions. The first is diversity.

    Digest Number: 94-8
Supply and Demand of Teachers of Color
    Mark S. Lewis

At the same time, a number of national organizations have consistently stressed the importance of Black, Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American role models for both minority and majority students (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education [ AACTE ], 1987; American Council on Education, 1988). While role models enhance a child's impression of what he or she is or can be, there is an even more important goal in securing a racially and ethnically balanced teaching population. Teachers of color bring with them an inherent understanding of the backgrounds, attitudes, and experiences of students from certain groups and therefore can help inform majority teachers on effective ways and means to communicate with students of color (Dilworth, 1990). It has also been pointed out that there is a tremendous value in diversity as it exists in a democracy: "diversity is not just an issue of color but a concept that encourages diversity of thoughtthe exchange of different ideas and ways to approach problems" (Michael-Bandele, 1993). As the data show, there are significant disparities between the numbers of teachers of color and those of students of color. This digest will focus on the data and examine how well schools, colleges, and departments of education (SCDE) are doing in supplying teachers of color for the nation's classrooms.
