Asteroids range in size from Ceres, which has a diameter of about 1000 km, down to the size of pebbles. Sixteen asteroids have a diameter of 240 km or greater. They have been found inside Earth's orbit to beyond Saturn's orbit. Most, however, are contained within a main belt that exists between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Some have orbits that cross Earth's path and some have even hit the Earth in times past. One of the best preserved examples is Barringer Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona.

Asteroids
O n the first day of January 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi discovered an object which he first thought was a new comet. But after its orbit was better determined it was clear that it was not a comet but more like a small planet. Piazzi named it Ceres, after the Sicilian goddess of grain. Three other small bodies were discovered in the next few years (Pallas, Vesta, and Juno). By the end of the 19th century there were several hundred. S everal hundred thousand asteroids have been discovered and given provisional designations so far. Thousands more are discovered each year. There are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands more that are too small to be seen from the Earth . There are 26 known asteroids larger than 200 km in diameter. Our census of the largest ones is now fairly complete: we probably know 99% of the asteroids larger than 100 km in diameter. Of those in the 10 to 100 km range we have cataloged about half. But we know very few of the smaller ones; there are probably considerably more than a million asteroids in the 1 km range. T he total mass of all the asteroids is less than that of the Moon Ida and 951 Gaspra were photographed by the Galileo spacecraft on its way to Jupiter. The

of the NASA Planetary Data System
The Planetary Data System (PDS) is a distributed archive of solar system data, prepared in a standard format for use primarily by astronomical observers and mission planners, as well as educators and students. The Small Bodies Node (SBN) specializes in data concerning asteroids, comets and interplanetary dust.
Data Services at this Node
  • SBN on-line data archives , with immediately downloadable catalogs and datasets for
  • Small Bodies Data Base The Small Bodies Data Base (SBDB), currently in development, will combine the contents of all our online catalogs with our catalog of offline data to provide direct access to both datasets and individual results. The SBDB will eventually allow users to identify objects based on observed properties and to retrieve data relevant to specific selected objects. During the first stage of implementation, each online catalog is ingested into the database and the contents made available for display based on object identification. A cross-identification utility is built into the interface, so that only a single ID need be entered to retrieve all available data relevant to the object. The Test Interface is available for public perusal. About two thirds of the online archive catalogs are currently ingested, but work on ingesting additional catalogs is proceeding apace. Please feel free to try it out on you favorite comet or asteroid.

Play this game with extreme caution! Can be very habit-forming! Use the keyboard controls described below to maneuver your ship, destroying as many asteroids as you can while avoiding collision with them. Also watch for the flying saucers armed with guided missles. If you warp into hyperspace, your ship will momentarily disappear then reappear on another part of the screen, gradually fading in. During this time the ship is invunerable.

ASTEROIDS Introduction Near-Earth Asteroids (NEA) Asteroids and Dinosaurs ... Web Links Asteroids ASTEROIDS Asteroid 253 Mathilde, a Near-Earth Asteroid photographed by NASA's NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) mission in June 1997. Mathilde is about 60 km in diameter and orbits in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids are rocky or metallic objects, most of which orbit the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter . A few asteroids approach the Sun more closely. None of the asteroids have atmospheres. Asteroids are also known as planetoids or minor planets. THE ASTEROID BELT The asteroid belt is a doughnut-shaped concentration of asteroids orbiting the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, closer to the orbit of Mars. Most asteroids orbit from between 186 million to 370 million miles (300 million to 600 million km or 2 to 4 AU) from the Sun. The asteroids have a slightly elliptical orbit. The time for one revolution around the Sun varies from about three to six Earth years. The strong gravitational force of the planet Jupiter shepherds the asteroid belt, pulling the asteroids away from the Sun, keeping them from careening into the inner planets.

Sun Mercury Venus Earth ... Mars Asteroids Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune ... Kuiper Asteroids are lumps of rock, some as big as 1000 km in diameter, others as small as a computer monitor! Most of them lie in a fairly wide belt orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter , called (surprisingly!) the Asteroid Belt. The word asteroid has a real meaning, much like the word planet . Asteroid means "star like", because the first asteroids that were discovered resembled very dim stars.
Fig. 1: Location of the asteroids There are probably over 10,000 asteroids larger than 100 km across in the Solar System, with many millions of smaller ones. Most of these can be found in a belt between the planets Mars and Jupiter The first asteroid was discovered as a result of a curious relatonship known as Bode's Law . This is not a law at all, and is really only a coincidence. It goes as follows:
Bode's Law
  • Start with the number series in the first column below...
  • Add to each number...
  • Then divide by S S+4 (S+4)/10 Planet Distance Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Now compare these values with the average distances of the planets ( as known by Bode in 1772 ) from the Sun , measured in AU Top Right ^^
    The Hunt Begins
Alarmingly, Bode's Law produces numbers that are

Pilot a spaceship equipped with shields and auto-fire as you blast through level after level of rotating asteroids. UFOs and multi-segmented Killer Satellites take chase, searching for an opportunity to destroy your ship.
    Game Introduction
    Miscellaneous
There are two versions of the software. The original release proved to be so difficult that Atari released a revised version that had easier gameplay. This new version was originally introduced in Europe and is often referred to as the "European Version". Determining which version you are playing can be discerned by noting when the first appearance of a Killer Satellite occurs - in the original version this is near the end of the second wave, in the revised version it will appear near the end of the first wave (and moves much more slowly). Dave Sheppard was the designer. Play a JAVA emulated version of the game by visiting http://web.utanet.at/nkehrer/JAsteroidsDeluxe.html

Abram and Sarai were childless and likely to remain so. He was 85, she 76.. Then God, so the story goes, summoned Abram out of his tent one night. "Look now towards heaven, and count the stars." As Abram gazed up, the voice said "So shall thy seed be." The middle eastern sky at night was clear, with occasional smoke from campfires but few clouds. The sky Abram saw was filled with millions of visible stars. In Arabic their names would be Ibrahim and Sara. Click here to continue
