    What is asthma?
The symptoms of asthma are caused when airways (the tubes which carry air to and from the lungs) narrow and become inflamed. This may happen if there’s too much mucus being produced by the airways, or there is swelling or spasm in the lining of your airways. You feel breathless, wheezy, and may develop a dry cough. Symptoms tend to be worse at night or in the early morning. The symptoms can be severe and distressing, and may require hospital treatment. Severe asthma attacks can be fatal.
    What triggers it?
The symptoms of asthma can be set off by a variety of different triggers.
    These include:
    • exposure to allergens (substances that trigger a reaction)

According to the EPA , indoor air can be up to 7 times more polluted than outdoor air. Consequently, many respiratory illnesses (allergies, asthma, and hay fever-allergic rhinitis) are either caused, or aggravated, by indoor pollution. Children, elderly and sick individuals are especially susceptible. Common symptoms of allergies to dust include watery nasal discharge, stuffiness, itchy eyes /nose, sneezing, headache, and fatigue. If you consistently suffer from these symptoms, you are probably allergic to house dust. Allergens in house dust include dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, cockroach waste, pollens, and tobacco smoke.
It is difficult to avoid triggers of allergy and asthma entirely, but there are many things you can do to avoids exposure to allergens. We feature products that will help you get allergy relief and become less dependent on medications. The products include dust mite proof bedding such as Pristine and AllerSoft, HEPA air purifiers by Austin Air and IQAir, HEPA vacuum cleaners by Eureka and Nilfisk, anti-dust mite spray and powder by AllerSearch, and AllerSafe, and asthma products by Respironics, PARI, DeVilbiss, Omron, Medical Industries and more...

Secondhand Smoke Causes Women Decreased Lung Function Secondhand smoke causes decreased lung function in women, especially those with asthma, according to a study presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Atlanta on Tuesday. The study of more than 10,000 adults, 440 of whom had asthma, found secondhand smoke did not affect the lung function of men.
"Among females with and without asthma, we found that the greater their exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, the lower their lung function," said Mark Eisner, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. "The effect was greatest in women with asthma their chronic airway inflammation makes them even more susceptible to the effects of secondhand smoke." He noted that men were more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke at work, while women were more likely to breathe in secondhand smoke at home. "It's possible that men who are more sensitive to environmental tobacco smoke can more easily avoid it at work, while women can't avoid secondhand smoke at home," he said. "Or there may be a biological difference between men and women, such as women's smaller airways, which causes them to be more affected by smoke." Dr. Eisner said that healthcare professionals who care for people with asthma should assess if patients are exposed to smoke and counsel them to avoid exposure.
