For many years medical specialists have had difficulty in agreeing on a definition of asthma. However, one useful definition is that asthma is a lung disease with the following features:
  • airway obstruction that reverses either by itself or with treatment
  • airway inflammation
  • airway hyper-responsiveness to a variety of stimuli
WHAT DOES AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION MEAN? The lung is made up of tube-like segments (bronchi) which look like branches of a tree (Figure 1). At the tiny end of each narrowing branch, there are many tiny air sacs (alveoli) where the oxygen that you breathe into your lungs is transferred to your blood (Figure 2). Asthma is related to a narrowing of the larger tubes. The tubes don't have to actually be blocked to call them obstructed - just narrowed (Figure 3).

Citation information Asthma is a "respiratory disease in which spasm and constriction of the bronchial passages and swelling of their mucous lining cause obstruction of breathing, often due to allergy, particularly to dust, animal fur or feathers, molds, and pollen." Many people with allergic asthma, also called atopic or extrinsic asthma, also suffer from hay fever. Asthma in adults is less likely to be caused by allergy, and more likely to be associated with respiratory infections and emotional upsets. Nonallergic asthma is called intrinsic asthma (Encarta 1994). Asthma and allergies are also related because both seem to be a defensive response gone wrong. Interestingly, 3,000 - 4,000 Americans die from asthma each year and the numbers are increasing (Edleson 24). Asthma is not a fun disease to have because of asthma attacks. An asthma attack is when the muscles that line an asthmatic's bronchi - the tubes that carry air to a person's lungs - have spasms that make the bronchi contract, thus reducing the amount of air coming in and out of the body. Exercise can trigger an asthma attack. This can be carefully controlled with a regimen of exercise and drug treatment which will keep the asthma symptoms to a minimum (Encarta 1994). Asthma is also not fun to have because of the long process that the doctor has to go through to diagnose it. First, the doctor will want to know about the patient's family medical history. Next, he/she will need to learn about any personal medical problems and history. This is necessary so he/she will not provide a misdiagnosis. He/she will probably focus on respirtory problems when looking into the patient's history. He/she will want to know what happens before and after the patient's bouts of asthma-like symptoms. Then, the doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to wheezes in the patient's breathing. The doctor may want to take X-rays of the patient's chest to determine if his/her lungs look normal or overinflated. Overinflated lungs are one symptom of asthma. Lastly, the doctor may or may not give the patient a skin test for allergies.

Allergy-Immunology Glossary
Here are definitions of some of the words frequently encountered in literature on allergy and asthma. Please notify us if there are other words you would like added to the list.
Allergy
Allergies are inappropriate or exaggerated reactions of the immune system to substances that, in the majority of people, cause no symptoms. Symptoms of the allergic diseases may be caused by exposure of the skin to a chemical, of the respiratory system to particles of dust or pollen (or other substances), or of the stomach and intestines to a particular food.
Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe, frightening and life-threatening allergic reaction. The reaction, although rare, can occur after an insect sting or as a reaction to an injected drug - for example, penicillin or antitetanus (horse) serum. Less commonly, the reaction occurs after a particular food or drug has been taken by mouth.
Antibody
An antibody is a protein (also called an immunoglobulin) that is manufactured by lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) to neutralize an antigen or foreign protein. Bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms commonly contain many antigens, as do pollens, dust mites, molds, foods, and other substances. Although many types of antibodies are protective, inappropriate or excessive formation of antibodies may lead to illness. When the body forms a type of antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E), allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema may result when the patient is again exposed to the substance which caused IgE antibody formation (allergen).
