Sidebar: Helpful Resources For Minority Scientists TOO FEW: BIO president Carl Feldbaum cites the pipeline issue rather than discrimination as the main reason for small minority representation. Scientists who are members of racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the biotechnology industry, according to a variety of industry observers. Minority researchers agree with company representatives and career counselors that this disparity rarely if ever arises from conscious or overt discrimination, but they disagree on what, if anything, individual biotech companies should do about it. While those in the industry say the problem is quite real, it is difficult to quantify. Large and small biotechnology companies approached by The Scientist declined to provide breakdowns on the racial and ethnic makeup of their scientific staffs. I graduated a year early from high school and went out of state to a small liberal arts college (283 students in the school), but I missed my family too much so I came back to Houston and went to college (Tomball and now UHCL). I thought I wanted to major in computers and completed a few years of programming courses. I took accounting as a required core course - I found my niche, and my major changed. A short time later, my family moved to Brazil due to a promotion. I’ve visited them several times, but I know that Texas is my home. I’m a full-time student at University of Houston – Clear Lake, which is about 5 minutes away from JSC. The University offers degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Psychology, Business, and many concentrations in those schools. Many co-ops have the chance to work full time and take a class or two in their spare time, which helps bring graduation sooner. Winnie the Pooh (myself) and Tigger (Jane Mezentseva) at co-op initiation I’ll graduate August 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting at the University of Houston Clear Lake. The participants of the Agreement -USA, Russia, states-members of the European Space Agency (ESA), Japan and Canada decided to combine their efforts on the creation of the world’s first international space station. The first element of ISS - the Functional cargo block "Zarya" was launched from the "Baykonur" cosmodrome on 20 of November 1998. The second unit was launched by the USA on 4 December from cape Canaveral and was successfully docked with "Zarya". These events marked the beginning of practical realization of an unprecedented not only in technical but also in political sense project of the end of XX - the beginning of XXI-century.
