Close Call with Near Earth Asteroid
January 7, 2002 Here's a bit of earth-shaking news for those of you who assume that NASA and the world's astronomers are able to alert us well in advance of an asteroid collision... Near-Earth asteroid 2001 YB5 raced past Earth today only two times farther away than the Moon. This asteroid is roughly 300 meters across and, according to a BBC World News reporter, could have taken out the entire U.K. if it had impacted there. This object wasn't even discovered until December 27th by the Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking survey! Asteroid 2001 YB5 orbits the sun at a frequency of approximately 1,000 days.

Deadly Asteroid Cloud Expected Around 2003
According to a 1997 article in Shock Media, the S.E.T.I. team is tracking a massive cloud of asteroids which is headed directly into our solar system. The team's John Hawkins expects the first debris to become visible to the naked eye around 2003 with impact of the first stellar bodies shortly after that. "... The shocking element of this cloud is that within its center, there are chunks the size of moon's." He adds, "The cloud is moving incredibly fast, much faster that we first anticipated, when we first made this horrible discovery..."

Breaking News Where are the other Earths beyond the solar system?
One of the most fascinating areas of astronomical research in recent years has been the search for other 'Earths' circling Sun-like stars far beyond our Solar System. In recent years nearly 100 planets have been discovered in orbits around other stars, but none of these 'exoplanets' remotely resembles the Earth.

Mapping the 'Cosmic Web' of dark matter
What is Dark Matter and where is it found? These are two of the major mysteries in current studies of the Universe. Although the nature of this invisible material remains elusive, astronomers are beginning to produce detailed maps of the Cosmos, showing its location in relation to the ordinary matter that we can see in telescopes.
    FULL STORY

Evidence suggests a new form of matter
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has found two stars one too small, one too cold that reveal cracks in our understanding of the structure of matter. These discoveries open a new window on nuclear physics, offering a link between the vast cosmos and its tiniest constituents.

Astronomers detect stellar ashes at the dawn of time
Using a powerful instrument on a telescope in Hawaii, UK astronomers have found ashes from a generation of stars that died over 10 billion years ago. This is the first time that the tell-tale cosmic dust has been detected at such an early stage in the evolution of the universe.

    Lighter than Air
New schemes to cancel the pull of gravity aren't just science fiction
By Corey S. Powell In her laboratory at the University of Alabama, Ning Li tinkers time and again with a device she believes will transform the world. Tanks of liquid nitrogen and a clumsy array of plumbing surround a chamber in which the temperature has been reduced to 390 degrees below zero. Inside, a disk of an exotic ceramic material that's about the size of a phonograph record spins rapidly. Levitated by powerful magnets, the disk floats in midair. The contraption may not look like much, but Li insists that the data she is gathering could rid mankind of the shackles that bind us to the planet. "It could change everything," she says. "Current industry will vanish from the face of the Earth!" A practical antigravity device could allow rockets without propellant or power plants that run without fuel. Li hopes to pave the way by designing an antigravity car-and thinks she can do it in a decade. Full story
Super-Telescope Sightings Images from the world's most sophisticated optical observatory showcase the dynamic interactions that build and tear apart galaxies. Scientists working on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in southern Chile have viewed a swarm of young stars stirred by vast explosions; a dwarf galaxy in the process of fading away to nothing; and a "globular cluster" of stars being cannibalized by the gravity of the Milky Way. The results were released this week at a special symposium celebrating the inauguration of VLT's first telescope. Eventually the observatory will consist of four giant, linked telescopes, each with a mirror 25 feet across.
