EDITORIAL INFORMATION W ithin these pages, the author explores the fascinating world of radio astronomy with a hands-on approach found nowhere else in the literature. The book is the result of years of experimentation and radio telescope construction by the author and his students at Saint Mary's University in Hallifax, Nova Scotia. Most all of the equipment is constructed from inexpensive surplus materials, placing these projects within financial reach of schools and individuals with very modest budgets. Caltech Computational Astronomy Projects
Modern astronomical telescopes are using increasingly sophisticated instrument technology, and produce larger and more complex datasets which often require large amounts of computation to extract the maximum signal-to-noise ratio from an observation. Thus high-performance computers must be viewed as essential components of these new instruments. The following are some of our current projects in computational astronomy.

We have several on-going research projects, all involving students. The links below will lead you to descriptions of some of those projects. David Cohen does laboratory experiments and x-ray observations to study the winds from massive stars and other cosmic x-ray sources. You can also see what his student research group is up to Eric Jensen studies the formation of planets in binary systems , and is completing a search for nearby, young stars John Gaustad has just completed an H-alpha survey of the entire southern sky to map the distribution of interstellar hydrogen gas. Wulff Heintz studies variable stars using the 24-inch refractor in Sproul Observatory Michael Brown studies plasma like that found on the sun. Astronomy Research Projects for School and University Students
A Special One-Day Meeting held at the
International Astronomical Union Manchester, UK,
10:30 Friday 18 August 2000
The discussion meeting explored ways in which students at school and university could participate in research projects, and at the same time increase their understanding of astronomy and develop useful skills. The increase in access to robotic telescopes and to astronomy databases is making research by school and undergraduate students ever more feasible. In addition, useful research can be done with very modest telescope systems, of the sort a school could afford. This meeting was organised by the Education Committee of the Royal Astronomical Society and by Commission 46 of the International Astronomical Union and held after the end of the IAU General Assembly, Manchester 2000. Telescopes in Education Mr David Smith, Highgate School, North Road, London N6 4AY.

They provide a valuable opportunity for high school students to experience many of the joys and frustrations that make up the intellectual challenge of Science. Astronomy is one branch of Science that lends itself to student projects. Student Research Projects (SRPs) can be individual, group or collaborative between groups in other schools or countries and may involve professional mentors. Use of the Internet and remote access telescopes allow students to undertake challenging research and make worthwhile contributions to professional programs. This paper presents case studies of student projects in optical and radio astronomy from Australian and overseas schools and details both the benefits and problems faced in conducting such projects. Student responses to involvement in projects are discussed. Potential areas for future collaboration and development are highlighted together with the need for more research as to the most effective ways to implement projects and develop student skills.

71. NASA/MSU-Bozeman CERES Project Educational Activities
A team of master teachers, university faculty, and NASA researchers have created a series of webbased astronomy and astrobiology lessons for the CERES Project. group projects require 4 to 10 class hours and integrate themes unifying concepts in science with astronomy objectives
http://btc.montana.edu/ceres/html/EdActivities.html
A team of master teachers, university faculty, and NASA researchers have created a series of web-based astronomy and astrobiology lessons for the CERES Project. These classroom-ready activities for K-12 students represent a robust combination of contemporary teaching/learning strategies from the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996), exciting and current NASA science data, and Internet pointers to an endless supply of accurate and timely resources.
Three Types of Classroom-Ready Lessons are Available On-line:
  • STUDENT INQUIRIES / EXTENSION LESSONS

  • Students explore NASA data to construct first-hand knowledge about the astronomical universe. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are tied explicitly to the NRC National Science Education Standards astronomy objectives. They can be used as an introduction to astronomy topics, as an intermediate activity, or as an extension activity that requires active participation by students.
  • SPACEQUESTS

  • QuestForm Template

  • APPLICATIONS IN ASTROBIOLOGY

  • Students explore interdisciplinary science topics within the context of astrobiology to construct first-hand knowledge about the origin, distribution, and future of life on Earth and beyond. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are closely tied to the NRC National Science Education Standards and the Principles and Standards for Mathematics. These lessons can be used as stand alone activities or as supplemental materials for standard math and science courses. Many of these activities are suitable for both middle and high school students, even though they may be cited as being appropriate for one group or another.

-Ronald Reagan to Mikhail Gorbachev- "In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think, how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask is not an alien force ALREADY among us?" On December 4th 2002 there was a total solar eclipse and the best place in the world to see it was the town of Ceduna in South Australia. It just happens that the University of Tasmania operates a radiotelescope just north of Ceduna and a team of us went off to Ceduna to view the eclipse, do some science and show off our beautiful telescope. More information on what were doing, can be found here ARC Success!! The ARC Discovery Projects and Linkage Infrastructure Grants were announced this week. Both Prof. McCulloch and Dr Ellingsen plus their collaborators were awarded $170,000 per year under the Discovery scheme to continue their respective work in "Structure and Evolution of High Brightness Temperature Cores of Quasars" and "Masers: high resolution probes of star formation". This will fund new PostDoc and PostGrad positions. This follows on the heels of the two ARC Linkage Grants in the last round. The most beautiful radio telescope in the world!
