    Introduction
The Perth Astronomy Research Group was founded in 1987 to facilitate cooperative astronomical and astrophysical research between the Perth Universities and the Government Observatory of Western Australia. Like the mythical phoenix, PARG rose from the ashes of cut-backs to scientific expenditure, to create a viable, productive avenue for astronomical research in Western Australia. The group is affiliated to all of the major astronomical research institutes in WA, including Murdoch University Curtin University Perth Observatory the University of Western Australia and Edith Cowan University . By pooling the resources of these institutes, Western Australian astronomers have been able to maintain several leading research programs, as well as providing an avenue for interested students to enter the field of astronomy. In these webpages you can find information regarding the research projects conducted by PARG, details and finder-charts of our supernovae ,a list of our

Physics has a number of strong research programmes. These are productive with many refereed papers produced each year. Research Areas Laser Scattering LASER SCATTERING There is over 20 years experience in the theory and application of laser scattering to non-destructive measurement with special emphasis on properties of individual microparticles and living cells. More recent is an interest in biological applications of light scattering and optical trapping. There is also development and consultancy work on various aspects of optical monitoring and measurement. The major research projects are: Scattering of Light from Microparticles: this has led to the development of several aerosol monitors designed to count, size and classify particles according to their shape, and a laser diffractometer for determining the size, internal structure, refractive index and its distribution in cells and microparticles. Ongoing projects include particle and cell sorting based on laser scattering, a study of water relations in bacterial spores and particle analysis by laser-acoustic Doppler scattering. Theory of Light Scattering: this includes both the direct and the inverse scattering problems for particles of various geometry's (i.e. obtaining the properties of the scattered light from the properties of the object which scattered it and

You can move around these pages using the links in the blue bar at the top right of the page. Members of the group have research interests in various areas of astronomy, astrophysics and space science. A major interest area is multiwavelength observations and theoretical investigations of interacting binary stars containing a compact object - either a white dwarf, neutron star or black hole. Other staff pursue research into the formation and chemical evolution of the Galaxy and the chemical elements; theoretical investigations of particle acceleration and transport in solar flares; computer studies of the orbital evolution of small bodies in the solar system and extrasolar planets; and atmospheric phenomena associated with solar eclipses. We are part of the UK consortium contributing to the Southern African Large Telescope ( SALT ), part of the Wide Angle Search for Planets (

Astronomy Nosey Stuff Contact Information Astronomy Research NGC 2264 at 12 microns My research at Steward Observatory focused on star formation in the Milky Way, and especially in the young (about five million years old) galactic cluster NGC 2264. This star formation region is filled with young stars, dust, and gas. A major advancement in understanding this cluster was made by surveying the point sources in this region. This survey was combined with work by C.J. Lada, Erick Young, and Tom Greene, to produce a catalogue of 4900 detections at the V, R, I, J, H, and K photometric bands. I built an instrument for use with existing infrared imaging camera hardware. This instrument enabled high quality polarimetric maps to be made of sources such as Sharpless 106 Sharpless 140 , and also a region in NGC 2264 Using the coordinates obtained by making the multiband survey mentioned above, the spectra of 361 sources in NGC 2264 were obtained. I wanted to determine the spectral types of these stars, but since the spectra spanned the range 3690-6960 Angstroms, I had to extend the MK classification system to these red wavelengths. Using
