61. Wea Summer Recreation Program
Program working to build community facilities for softball and general youth athletics.
http://users.nlci.com/weabaseball/
The dugout is the only part remaining of the fields where these boys played many baseball games. When I look back on my childhood, I have memories of playing baseball on warm summer nights. Now that I am older, I am creating memories with my children, by watching and coaching them in youth baseball. Playing sports as a child was exciting, and I learned many things that still shape my life today. Being a part of the memories that my children create is even more exciting and rewarding. Unfortunately for the children in the Wea baseball and softball programs, creating baseball memories has become much harder this year. Recent development of soccer fields behind Mayflower Mill Elementary School has jeopardized the coming season, and perhaps several seasons to follow. Four of the six fields used by our program were lost in the development, and we are faced with the possibility of not having the facilities to maintain quality programs. As a not for profit organization, it is not possible for the WEA Summer Recreation Program to fund the cost of replacing 4 or more baseball fields. We recognize the need to ask our community, as well as neighboring communities, for support in meeting this difficult task. The Wea Summer Recreation Program must build facilities capable of meeting our current and future needs. Our participation level is approaching 450 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 14. Considering the growth in the city of Lafayette (Indiana), and in Tippecanoe County, we're certain the participation in our programs will increase throughout the coming years.

The 2002-2003 Track and Field Preview The Track and Field teams at Cumberland College have improved tremendously over the last couple years. With returning All- American 800 meter runners Joe Salvato and Thelton Detry we should continue to score high at the National Championships. Jerald Tisdale is looking to run middle at 47 seconds for 400 meters and help keep the Patriots a National force. Incoming Freshmen Derrick Byrd from Leesburg, Florida jumped 47 feet in the Triple Jump and will give us a big boost in the jumps department. Along with the distance runners who look to have five men under 14:30 for 5000 meters, Cumberland should be a top ten team again at the NAIA National Championships. On the women’s side sprinter Courtney Day had a great year as a freshmen and expectations are high for an outstanding sophomore season. She will have the help of a strong recruiting class of Eupeaka Hachett, JoElla Morgan, Michelle Warnky, and Barb Davies. Along with returning National Track Qualifiers, Abby Hamrick and Alicia Heyne, the Patriots look to continue to be one of the best Small College Track and Field Teams in the Nation.

Athletics
Speed on the track and strength and power in the jumping and throwing events. That's what draws the crowds to athletics . The track and field events at the Paralympic Games draw the largest number of athletes and spectators. They offer a wide range of competitions and the largest number of events. Athletics has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1960 and, since then, advances in technology and the athletes' sheer dedication to the sport have made once unimaginable feats become realities - and world records. Athletics events are open to athletes in all disabilitiy classes . Some compete in wheelchairs, others with prostheses, and visually impaired and blind athletes compete with the guidance of a sighted companion. Events include track, throwing, jumping, pentathlon and the marathon. Athletes compete according to their functional classifications in each event and these events are continually being redefined to include as many athletes as possible.

The history of athletics at ASU is a long and proud one. The University has always prided itself on providing a learning experience for its student-athletes, in addition to competing successfully at the highest levels of intercollegiate competition. Today, the University offers intercollegiate competition in nine sports: four for men and five for women. ASU sponsors men's football, basketball, cross country and track and women's volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, and track. Each of the sports, with the exception of women's soccer which is in its fifth year of competition, has competed at the NCAA championships. Overall, ASU can boast one national title, three runner-up finishes, several top ten national rankings, numerous state and conference titles, and a host of awards. ASU's list of achievements also includes over 150 All-American athletes and 17 Academic All-Americans and an Academic All-American of the Year in the 30-plus years of senior intercollegiate competition. Historically, Angelo State began intercollegiate competition on May 11, 1929, with a tennis tournament against Sul Ross State. Men's basketball was added in 1931, with track following in 1934 and football in 1940. Men's golf and baseball have also been sports at ASU. ASU no longer sponsors either golf, baseball, indoor track, or tennis. ASU began senior competition in athletics in 1964, the same year that ASU became a four-year degree granting institution.
