  • Travel at safe and reasonable speeds. Know your own limitations. Wear a properly fitted protective helmet. Allow only one person on the vehicle at a time. Always be courteous when you approach or pass other trail users.
What is the Forest Service policy for vehicle use on Forest Service Roads?
  • A Forest Supervisor's Closure Order was issued on July 13, 1993 to bring Forest Service road use regulations into compliance with Mississippi State Law. Effective October 1, 1993, unlicensed motorized vehicles such as 3 or 4 wheelers, motorized trail cycles, and ATV's can no longer be used on Forest Service roads, that are open to licensed motorized vehicle traffic.
Why is this policy needed?
  • Current policy for the National Forests in Mississippi recognizes the need to provide a safe setting for all user groups. With increasing use of the National Forests in Mississippi for a wide variety of recreational pursuits, conflicts between user groups are likely to/and do occur. Driving for pleasure, including off-road recreational vehicles, is one of the many uses of National Forest lands. However, at the same time, it is of great concern to forest personnel that mixing licensed vehicles with unlicensed vehicles types (ie 4-wheelers, 3-wheelers, motorized trail cycles, ATV's) does not provide a safe setting for all user groups. The goal of this new policy is to eliminate the dangers associated with mixed vehicle use.
