While these animals are a fair dinkum representation of this glorious country, they are usually seen in sanctuaries and zoos rather than during the course of everyday city life. Last January, on the very day we arrived in Brisbane, we were greeted by a number of small skinks (geckos) roaming the kitchen and bedrooms walls. As we neither had to feed or arrange "skink sitting" for them while we are off on our various vacations throughout the year, the little skinks have been perfect pets.

NEW ZEALAND PARROTS Part I
Their Present Status and Distribution
by Martin Fingland ©
The New Zealand region contains a small but unique group of parrots that through a long period of isolation have developed specialised habits. This group have suffered greatly as a result of pressures brought about by the country's relatively recent human occupation - firstly Polynesians, followed by Europeans. Due to the destruction and modification of habitats and the introduction of predators and competitors, the parrots along with many other endemic New Zealand species, have disappeared from much of their former range. These species are now found in much reduced numbers or survive only as relict colonies in isolated areas such as small, predator-free islands. Few articles have been written concerning N.Z. parrots in Parrot Society of Australia News in the past, it therefore appears timely to relate the present situation, with the aim to increase awareness and appreciation for what are some of the most distinctive, specialised and, sadly, rarest parrots in the world. There are six native New Zealand parrot species , these being the Kakapo Kea Kaka Antipodes Island Parakeet ... Red-crowned Kakariki and Yellow-crowned Kakariki . The Kakariki species involve six N.Z. sub-species and a further four sub-species found outside the region, of which two are extinct. As there are only a few

Melbourne is the Capital City for the State of Victoria. It is very pleasantly situated beside the beautiful Yarra River. The Yarra River many years ago was a bit of a disgrace and heavily polluted. However that is not the case now. Melbourne has many tourist attractions for a visitor (locals can't afford them) - zoos - marine aquarium - galleries, churches, parks, restraurants, but probably the main one is the beautiful old buildings which blend very well with the present day architecture. Melbourne is a great place for a holiday. Talking about old buildings you must see Captain Cook's Cottage which is in the Fitzroy Gardens. Captain James Cook discovered Australia. If you go to the Australian Songs music page, there is some information about Captain Cook as well as one of our folk tunes entitled "Botany Bay", the first line is "Farewell to old England Forever" Melbourne is famous for Australia's premier horse race "The Melbourne Cup" held the first Tuesday in Novenber at approximately 3pm at Flemington Racecourse. It is a public holiday in Melbourne, and in the rest of Australia and now in many parts of the world people stop work just to listen to this race. Horses from all over the world come here to participate. The Queen entered a horse in this race a few years ago - it did not win. Generally it will be won by a horse that has been bred in New Zealand.

    Kawau Island Wallabies
"Extinct" wallabies alive, well and in New Zealand
"These wallabies represent genetic stock that no longer exists in Australia" The remnants of a genetically distinct South Australian wallaby population considered extinct for nearly a century has been "rediscovered" by Marsupial CRC researchers – living as a pest in New Zealand. DNA sampling by Marsupial Cooperative Research Centre scientist Dr Andrea Taylor has established that an introduced colony of tammar wallabies living on Kawau Island, 55 kilometres north-east of Auckland, is almost certainly comprised of the descendants of a wallaby population that vanished from mainland South Australia in the early 1900s. "Prior to the turn of the century there were at least two morphologically-distinct populations of tammar wallaby living in South Australia," said Dr Taylor. "There's only one population left, on Kangaroo Island and two other islands where the Kangaroo Island wallabies were introduced. The sampling established that there was only a three per cent chance that the Kawau colony was founded from Kangaroo Island, which makes this New Zealand population quite precious. They represent genetic stock that no longer exists in Australia." The Kawau Island wallabies – known there as damas – were shipped to New Zealand in the late 1800s by New Zealand's then-governor, Sir George Grey, who took the post immediately after his governorship of South Australia. Grey bought the 2000 hectare island in 1862 and stocked it with reminders of his postings in Australia and South Africa, including zebra, antelope, kookaburras and tammar and parma wallabies. The wallabies flourished, to the extent that in the 1950s-60s they overran attempts to establish farms on the island.

A South Australian wallaby subspecies, considered extinct for nearly a century, has been "rediscovered" in New Zealand by researchers from the Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) for Conservation and Management of Marsupials, at Macquarie University. DNA sampling has established that an introduced colony of tammar wallabies living on Kawau Island, 55 kilometres north-east of Auckland, is almost certainly comprised of the descendants of a wallaby subspecies that vanished from mainland South Australia in the early 1900s.
"The Kawau Is. tammar wallaby might LOOK the same as the many in Australian wildlife parks and on Kangaroo Is., but wait until you see its DNA!" The Kawau Island wallabies (known there as damas) were shipped to New Zealand in the late 1800s by New Zealand's then-governor, Sir George Grey, who took the post immediately after his governorship of South Australia. Grey bought the 2000 hectare island in 1862 and stocked it with reminders of his postings in Australia and South Africa, including zebra, antelope and kookaburras, as well as tammar, parma, and brush-tailed rock-wallabies. The wallabies flourished to such an extent that in the 1950s-60s they overran attempts to establish farms on the island. There now may be more than 2000 tammar wallabies on Kawau Island. They are progressively destroying the native vegetation through over-grazing (they climb to reach foliage) and digging nests among tree roots. Island residents occasionally cull the wallabies and the marsupials are regularly exported to zoos and fauna parks in 15 countries. Despite this, the subspecies has been believed to have been extinct for nearly a century.
