Katrina PROUST Background I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian, Latin, French and Classical Archaeology (1974) and a Bachelor of Laws (1978) from the University of Sydney. In 1990 I studied Historical Archaeology as a Master's qualifying course and went on to gain a Master of Letters in Public Archaeology (Cultural Conservation) in 1994, also from the University of Sydney. My MLitt research project was entitled ‘The Physical Legacy of European Colonisation in South-East Asia’. Since 1999 I have been a full-time candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at the Australian National University in Canberra. My working life began with a short period as a solicitor in the legal profession of Sydney. It has included over six years as Executive Secretary of the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board, and various periods with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney, with the Australian section of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Australia ICOMOS), and as a consultant in Australian archaeology, history and heritage conservation. PhD Research Project My PhD research is in environmental history and water resource policy and management. By combining the techniques of historical research with those of systems analysis I am creating a new method to understand the effects of policies on system behaviour. I apply this generic approach to an historical study of the growth in understanding of salinity from the 1880s to 1945 in south-eastern Australia. The study includes the formative years of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme. I am examining the earliest observations of the Australian landscape as a saline environment, and the understanding of irrigation salinity in another part of the British colonial empire – India.

Introduction
The Centre for Classics and Archaeology at Melbourne offers postgraduate programs at one of the leading international centres for the study of the ancient world. As the only program of its kind in Australia, classics and archaeology draws upon cutting edge research, the world class collection at the Ian Potter Museum and a range of innovative multimedia resources. A number of fieldwork options are provided in which students may gain direct and practical project experience. Students also have the opportunity to study Ancient Greek and/or Latin classical language and they may specialise either in a particular area or pursue broader interests. An articulated structure of higher degree study options exist for students seeking to build on their interests and the knowledge gained in this area. Classics and archaeology students graduate with transferable skills that will draw on the analytical and research knowledge gained in this area of study and which can lead to a variety of career options and pathways. http://www.sfca.unimelb.edu.au

Visions From the Past: The Archaeology of Australian Aboriginal Art
Author: M.J. Morwood, illustrations by D.R. Hobbs
Aboriginal rock art: a vast gallery, the work of 1500 generations.
The island continent of Australia contains the largest continuous record of human artistic expression in history. Here is a beautifully illustrated and comprehensive introduction to this ancient art and its archaeology from Mike Morwood, an experienced and respected authority.
A vast art gallery - the work of 1500 generations.
Across an island continent - on flat slabs overlooking the sea, on desert boulders, under rock overhangs, on the sheer face of deep ravines - the first Australians painted and carved what mattered to them.
Here are stories of the birth of the world and the creation of ancestral humans, of the creatures who made the landscape and gave humans their laws, of the animals who shared these peoples' world, of contact with seafaring races from the north, and of fateful meetings with European arrivals.
Here is art that reaches back towards the beginning of art, a record of communities of immense antiquity. Some sites present the art of recent times alongside or overlapping with art many thousands of years old. In other places the record has been broken in the distant past.

The extinction of the Australian megafauna
Our research is directed to establish the age of the Australian megafauna sites. U-series dating of eggshells and optical dating of sediments have provided important calibration points for the amino acid study of Miller et al. (1999). ESR dating has shown that some of the "young" megafauna sites, e.g. Lancefield (Huet et al. 1998) or Tambar Springs (Gr¸n, unpublished) are older than about 50,000 years. At the Naracoorte Caves (see Figures 1 and 2), we have used U-series dating as well as ESR dating to establish the the chronology of this World Heritage site back to more than 400,000 years (Gr¸n et al. 2001, Moriarty et al. 2000). Presently, we are collaborating with Judith Field (Sydney University), the Chief archaeologist at Cuddie Springs, to establish the age of the faunal remains of this significant site as well as with R. Wells (Flinders University) on numerous other megafauna sites in Australia. References:
