Connections This course examines the social functions of popular culture in Australia with particular emphasis on the period from 1960 to the present. It asks how popular culture is produced and consumed, and how the social function of specific forms (eg music, television, cinema, fashion, youth cultures) has altered in recent decades. The course examines the distinctive ways in which popular culture, whether from Australia or overseas, has developed in Australia. It analyses how certain cultural forms have been perceived as typically 'Australian' while others have been perceived as 'foreign'. The social and political consequences of such perceptions will be examined. At the end of the course you should be familiar with recent debates about the nature of popular culture in general and Australian popular culture in particular. You should also have developed a good understanding of the main social and cultural forces operating in Australia since the 1960s.

Building a Culture that Respects Privacy The newly strengthened Privacy Act delivers a clear message to private sector organisations that it's time to adopt practices that protect the personal information of Australians, Federal Privacy Commissioner Malcolm Crompton said today. "The Privacy Act will give Australians greater control over the use of their personal information when they deal with government, business and other private sector organisations while providing the regulatory tools to build a culture that respects privacy", said Mr Crompton. The Privacy Commissioner will work with private sector organisations to establish privacy solutions and promote good practices for managing the personal information of Australians. "Some businesses and organisations are already in a strong position to comply with the Act while others may need to do some work to get their privacy house in order to conform to the Act," Mr Crompton said.

      Strategic Plan 2000
Introduction by the Federal Privacy Commissioner I am pleased to present the Strategic Plan for the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner. Clearly, the purpose of the Office is to promote an Australian culture that respects privacy. Our challenge has been to look for ways to do this most effectively within resources available. All members of staff of the Office took part in developing the Plan during 1999. It reflects many hours of thinking and discussions about how best the Office should position itself in the face of the challenges and new opportunities before it. The Plan is timely given the changing environment faced by the Office in comparison with when the Office first came into being in 1989.
