Australian government renews call for team not to play in Zim
Posted Wed, 05 Feb 2003 The Australian government has renewed its call for its World Cup team not to play in Zimbabwe this month. The call follows a decision reached only yesterday between the Australian Cricket Board and the country's Players Association that the game scheduled for the 24th go ahead in Buluwayo. But Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, feels any match played in Zimbabwe will be inappropriate and will lead to their players being used by President Robert Mugabe as pawns in a propaganda campaign. Australia has also advised its citizens against travelling to Zimbabwe.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUUG CALLS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SECTOR TO ACCELERATE ADOPTION OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE Highlighting recent Government sector progress AUUG Inc., the Australian UNIX and Open Systems group, calls on Federal and State agencies to further accelerate the adoption of Open Source software deployment within the Government sector.
SYDNEY, Australia 20 August 2002 The Australian UNIX and Open Systems User Group (AUUG, Inc.) today congratulated the Government sector on recent progress in the adoption of Open Source and called for the accelerated adoption of Open Standards based Open Source solutions such as Linux and BSD within departments and agencies. The call follows two recent significant Open Source wins. The first a month ago, when the key federal government department CentreLink, the world's twelfth largest processing organisation, announced that it had established a world class Linux Laboratory in collaboration with IBM to reduce costs and raise the flexibility of the agency's IT systems. The second came last week, when the Federal Department of Veterans' Affairs announced that it is moving file and print services for all branch offices to an IBM zSeries mainframe running Linux. "It's clear that IT departments within government agencies are being attracted to Open Source software such as Linux," says Gordon Hubbard, AUUG Inc. Press Secretary. "What we'd like to see now is a commitment within government that actively supports and encourages the use of Linux and other Open Source systems to reduce licensing fees, thus saving money, and to provide open, stable and secure government IT infrastructure solutions."

CANBERRA (Reuters) The Australian government renewed its call for World Cup cricket matches to be moved out of Zimbabwe on Wednesday despite its cricket board committing its team to play its scheduled match there. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said it was inappropriate to play cricket in Zimbabwe and welcomed England's decision to ask the International Cricket Council to move its February 13 game from Harare to South Africa due to security concerns. "We don't want to see our great cricketers used as pawns by President (Robert) Mugabe in a propaganda campaign," Downer told parliament. "It is quite undesirable for World Cup cricket matches to proceed in Zimbabwe." Australia's foreign office has warned of likely violent protests at the matches and urged Australians to steer clear. The Australian team decided at a meeting with Australian cricket authorities in South Africa on Tuesday that it would go ahead with its February 24 match in Bulawayo as the political situation was not bad enough to jeopardize its safety. Australian captain Ricky Ponting said he and his team, the defending world champion, trusted the cricket authorities to make the correct decisions.

On Australia Day, U.S. Rights Group Demands that Australian Government Stop Bullying East Timor
Australian Government Must Not Cheat World¹s Newest Country Out of Billions of Dollars in Oil and Gas Revenues
January 26, 2003 To mark the January 26 national holiday Australia Day, the East Timor Action Network/U.S. demanded that the Australian government honor the national sovereignty and resource rights of East Timor by respecting international law in determining the maritime boundary between the two countries. Substantial oil and natural gas deposits lie under the Timor Sea between Australia and East Timor. The fate of tens of billions of dollars of revenue - and the quality of life for East Timor¹s present and future generations - depend on a fair boundary agreement. If the currently disputed boundary were drawn according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - the prevailing law on such matters - most, if not all, of the natural resources under debate would fall within East Timorese waters. But Australia has chosen not to play fair. Instead of resolving the issue through neutral international mediation, the Australian government has resorted to strong-arm and delaying tactics. In March 2002, it unilaterally withdrew from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ICTLOS), the mechanisms normally employed to resolve such territorial disputes.

But agitation for significant change rarely comes from those served well by the present system the major parties, the banks, the mass media, and big business (mainly foreign-owned). On the contrary, these powerful interests occasionally appear to unite to ridicule or ignore those proposing pro-Australian ideas. Meanwhile, the majority of voters are too busy getting on with their lives to successfully sort out the truth from the propaganda, and believe their vote has negligible effect anyway. They are easily swayed to accept that they have no real alternative to supporting one of the major parties. No matter what your political beliefs, you will find something to support, confuse, or confound them in the sites featured below:
