Australian history: towards a Marxist analysis
This website contains essays and articles on Australian history from a Marxist perspective.
So far all are the work of Phil Griffiths, currently a PhD student at the Australian National University, Canberra, and an activist in the International Socialist Organisation. These articles and essays are offered as they were written, flaws and all, in the hope that they will be of interest to others trying to understand the development of capitalism in Australia. This website is incomplete; sometime soon I hope to add a short essay on what a Marxist history of Australia would need to address. I would love to get feedback: email me at Phil.Griffiths@anu.edu.au Links to other historical, political and activist sites
The articles
NEW: September 2002: I have uploaded two articles dealing with my research into the development of the White Australia Policy. Most of these files are rtf files. This means you download them, save them on your computer, and then read them using any word processing package. Racism and class in Australian history : This is my current project. I am currently doing a PhD at ANU, tentatively titled White Australia, the ruling class agenda: 1875-1888, which rejects the idea that White Australia was a victory for the labour movement, and which is looking at the role of the ruling class in excluding Chinese immigrants and promoting anti-Asian racism. I am going to upload articles and papers as I write them. I have also included some old articles and essays.

Crisis in Australian History
This is the text of a talk given around 1985; and deals primarily with the causes of the Depression of the 1890s, looking at parallels to the 1930s. Some of the material here is a bit out of date, but what the heck. Back to home page During the past century, the Australian economy has experienced two periods of extremely severe economic collapse: the depressions of the 1890s and the 1930s. These crises were quite unlike anything we ourselves have ever experienced. In both depressions there was a decline in gross national product of the order of 30%. This meant mass unemployment of between a third and a half of all workers, widespread misery, hunger and anger. These periods of crisis are important for us as revolutionaries for it is in periods of crisis that the system reveals its inability to satisfy the basic needs of the mass of the population. It is in periods of crisis that all the old certainties are brought into doubt, when hundreds of thousands of people begin to turn to desperate solutions, when the ideas of revolutionary socialism can grip the imagination of the masses. What is it that produced two such extreme crises in this country? What forces, what events, what circumstances?

Archaeological discoveries indicate that Australian Indigenous history and culture dates back as far as 5000 years, although the first settlers are thought to have arrived around 50,000 years ago. This would have most likely been at a time when the sea levels were low, the land was more humid and animals larger.
    How to Play the Didgeridoo
Although much of Australia became populated, the central dry areas didn't attract settlers until around 25,000 years ago. The population grew proportionately quicker around 10,000 years ago as the climate improved. At the time of British settlement at Sydney Cove it is estimated that 300,000 aboriginal people, speaking around 250 languages inhabited Australia.

T he modern world is a complex and rapidly changing place. Making sense of the events that are shaping our society and culture relies on sound understanding of how the past has influenced our attitudes, our institutions and society. In particular an appreciation of Australian history enables us to think critically and to make informed judgements on controversial matters. Study of Australian History at Macquarie University covers diverse questions such as the interaction of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples from the first settlement to the 20th century, the development of a distinctive Australian community, the relationship between Britain and Ireland and Australia and the roles of women throughout Australian history. The study of Australian History at Macquarie University will help you to
sharpen your ability to think and argue logically. From first year undergraduate study, students will be introduced to original research and to the most recent work in Australian historiography.

Ecology and Empire: Towards an Australian History of the World
Tom Griffiths 'Ecology' and 'Empire' are words that suggest very different dimensions of life on earth; at times they might appear to be opposites. One is natural, the other social; one is local and specific to place, the other is geographically ambitious; one is often seen to be scientific, amenable to laws and exclusive of humanity; the other is political, quixotic and historical. Brought together under the scrutiny of scholarship, these worlds and world-views make for creative friction. But 'ecology' and 'empire' also had a real relationship. They forged an historical partnership of great power and one which, particularly in the last five hundred years, radically changed human and natural history across the globe. When, in 1986, the American historian Alfred W. Crosby wrote his important book, Ecological Imperialism , which built on his earlier The Columbian Exchange (1972), he threw those words together in his title and enjoyed the perversity of their pairing, the cheeky conjunction of apparent innocence and power. Crosby's book described how Europeans established themselves securely in far-flung but temperate countries and made them into 'neo-Europes': the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Uruguay. These were the 'lands of demographic takeover', those countries where Europeans quickly became numerically dominant over the indigenous peoples, amounting to between 75 and nearly 100 per cent of the populations.

    BUICK - THE AUSTRALIAN STORY
Story by Eric North - BCCA Historian
With the outbreak of war in 1914 and the subsequent restriction of space on cargo ships the Australian Government, in 1917, placed an embargo on the importation of motor car bodies. In 1917 about 15,000 cars were imported into Australia, approximately 10,000 of these were Model T Fords, 2,300 Dodges, 1,500 Buicks other marques making up the other 1,200 units. At this time only the Ford distributors had a local body building operation and only about 10% of their vehicles were fitted with local bodies and the premium was about £125. Small local "carriage builders" also imported chassis units onto which they built their own bodies.
This coincided with an agreement reached with General Motors Overseas to produce all the bodies for their vehicles in Australia. By this time production had risen to 22,000 bodies per year, about half for G.M. products.
In the period 1922-23 Buick CKD kits were imported from Canada, 3637 in 1922 and 3184 in 1923, from 1924 to 1930 small numbers of presumably complete cars came in from Canada and most of the chassis units came in from the U.S.A. No indicative figures for 1925 and 1926 are available, but it is probably safe to assume numbers were around the 3000 mark for each year. Holden body numbers indicate total Buick body production (presumably for calendar years not model years) 1927- 2857, 1928 - 2651, 1929 - 865 plus 768 Marquettes, 1930 - 517 . Registrations for 1930 indicated 1230 Buicks and 542 Marquettes. Strangely the available figures indicate 238 Master Tourers and 1347 Master Sedans produced in the 1931-33 period and no 8/50s at all produced, in spite of the fact that a number of these cars exist today. It is also interesting to note that a least one 1931 8/90 Victoria coupe was handcrafted by Holden and plated "Custom body by Holden"

"Linux Gazette... making Linux just a little more fun!
    The Australian History of Tux
    By Chris Jones
Gday from the land of Oz, If anyone out there is wondering about the growing popularity of Linux and its adoption by Australian writers as a writers true operating system, perhaps the following may help explain. On the reason for choosing Tuxthe penguin mascot for LinuxLinus Tolvalds, the first of thousands who wrote the Linux computer operating system on the world wide web, had this to say: When I was in Canberra a few years ago we went to the local zoo ... There they had a ferocious penguin that bit me... OK now, when Linus says he was bitten by an angry penguin in Canberra and that is a good reason for the Tux mascot which today spells Linux, there maybe more to the story. During the 1940s and 50s in Australia there was a literary magazine called, of all things, The Angry Penguins . This magazine was an avant-garde modernist poetry magazine edited by Max Harris and had modernist painters and writers grouped around it whose names are now legend in Australian art. But at that time they were just considered weird and way out. You know, the stereotype of mad deluded poets and artists starving and living in sub-standard housing. Anyway, this literary magazine started to get a bit too much of a following. A couple of boring farts, both academic poets, got a bit hot under the collar about this and got together to write and submit a hoax modernist poem under the false name of Ern Malley. As it worked out, these farts are now better known for this hoax and the false name Ern Malley, then their own true names and works.
