The slow death of Australian history
By Janet McCalman June 15 2002 It's ironic and sad that at a time when national history has never been more useful to our political leaders (hopping over to Gallipoli, celebrating Aussie battlers, branding this and that as "un-Australian"), Australian history as a field of scholarship should be dying. It might be booming in local historical societies, it might be delighting family-history researchers, but as a vibrant part of our national intellectual life, it is on its last legs. And that is because it is now almost impossible to get serious Australian scholarship published by a professional publishing house that has the skill to transform a manuscript into an effective piece of communication between two covers. This means that a scholar such as myself has to adjust research plans and interests and become reconciled to never again writing a serious book about my own country. I've published three so far, all adequate successes, but if I were starting out now with those same ideas, I fear they would never make it to print. For some time now, serious books have been struggling to sell sufficient copies to make them profitable to publish. It's easy to say that the writers were not good enough to attract readers. But it is also often true that the publishers were not good enough to know how to help authors make the best of their work, how to target the right audience, and how to employ technical expertise to make it cost effective.

Australian History NSW The Birthplace of the Thoroughbred in Australia After the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove in 1788, horses served a vital role in the development of white settlement in Australia. Records show that seven horses arrived with the first fleet. These horses came from the Cape of Good Hope and were not thoroughbreds. By 1810 the number of horses listed in the colony had increased to 203, and by 1820 the horse population had grown to 3,639. Much of this increase in numbers consisted of thoroughbreds as the need for fast sound horses increased. The story of Australian pioneering unfolded, with colonial horses playing a major role in transport and exploration. They were horses of mixed origins, although as the 19 th century progressed a superior type of stockhorse evolved, largely from the mating of the tough colonial horse with the thoroughbred and Arabian blood of the early racehorses. Known as the Waler, and infused with the blood of the Cleveland Bay (a popular light carriage horse of the day), this breed was later to gain great renown for its soundness, durability and courage as remounts for the Lancers, Mounted Rifles and Commonwealth Horse troops in the South African War of 1899-1902 and for the AIF in Egypt in the Great War of 1914-18, when a total of over 120,000 horses, mostly Thoroughbred were shipped to Egypt and India. A large trade in remounts to India for use by the British Army developed and the Thoroughbred became the prized possession of squatters and gentleman farmers of the colony. The "bush thoroughbreds" provided cattlemen with polo and camp-drafting mounts as well as working horses and show hacks.

The Australian History World Wide Web Project: Progress and Problems
    Diane Menghetti Paul Turnbull
The History World Wide Web Project is a series of at least five linked interactive teaching modules clustered around the theme "Health, Disease and Society in Australia, 1860-1940". It will incorporate assessable tasks and student feedback to help analyse of the effectiveness or otherwise of its teaching strategies. The project is funded by the Committee for the Advancement of University Teaching (CAUT), with financial support for the pilot unit provided by a James Cook University (JCU) Innovations in Teaching Grant. The modules are being designed and tested by historians whose interest in communication technology developed through H-ANZAU, an edited internet discussion list for practitioners of Australian and New Zealand history. href 1 At the time of writing, a number of scripts are at various stages of development, the pilot unit is being designed and we have started to put some of our material on disk. But while the practical work proceeds, team members are also engaged in early consideration of the less concrete problems raised by the project. This paper briefly describes our present directions and tentatively approaches some of these problems. Basically, the task is to find the most appropriate way to deliver material and achieve our pedagogic aims. It is probably fair to say that team members began the project with fairly hazy, and possibly conflicting, ideas on how this would be achieved. In our initial enthusiasm, several of us wrote module scripts in areas where we have research expertise.

[draft entry, published in: Oxford Companion to Australian History , Graeme Davison, John Hirst, Stuart Macintyre (eds), Melbourne, Oxford University Press, 1998, pp. 572-3] HISTORY OF SCIENCE in Australia is a field intimidated by its subject. Historians have been too slow to examine the local context of knowledge production and use, deferring to scientists and their uncritical catalogues of the past. Historical analysis has given way, too often, to the antiquarian plod or the celebratory frolic. In nineteenth century Australia, 'progress' was a popular theme whenever the scientifically-inclined paused to reflect on their discipline. By the latter half of the century, science was developing an institutional base with the establishment of universities, societies and government posts. History helped locate this fledgling enterprise within a grand progressive tradition. Catalogues of scientific achievement provided a preface to current endeavours. Obituaries of local workers portrayed them, stuffed and mounted, within a gallery of revered pioneers; there were no Darwins or Newtons amongst them, but their lives were still dedicated to the same glorious ideals. The collecting of history parallelled the collecting of specimens - the main scientific activity within the colonies. Science progressed by the steady accumulation of plants, platypi and people. By the end of the century, science was changing. Experimental science was beginning to displace natural history; professional scientists were edging amateurs out of the vanguard of progress. With more scientists, more societies, more publications and a never-ending parade of anniversaries to be commemorated, disciplinary and institutional studies became commonplace in the twentieth century - predominantly in scientific journals. As science fractured into increasingly narrow specialisations, history seeped in to fill the cracks, smoothing the narrative flow of scientific progress. Many of these historical efforts were of the 'amateur-antiquarian' variety identified by Michael Hoare ('The History of Australian Science: Prospect and Retrospect'

[draft entry, published in: Oxford Companion to Australian History , Graeme Davison, John Hirst, Stuart Macintyre (eds), Melbourne, Oxford University Press, 1998, pp. 164-5] CSIRO (the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and its forbears have undergone many transformations, reflecting twentieth century shifts in the relationship between science and government. In the midst of World War One, impressed by Germany's technological might, Prime Minister W.M. Hughes enthusiastically declared his support for the creation of a 'national laboratory'. An Advisory Committee representing science, government and business was set the difficult task of reconciling this vision with the realities of federalism. After softening the proposal's supposed centralist overtones, legislation was finally passed in 1920. The Institute of Science and Industry was established. Unfortunately the Institute, led by G.H. Knibbs

A poetic chronicler of Australian history
June 13 2002 Oliver Ormond MacDonagh, Historian, 1924-2002 Oliver MacDonagh, one of the most creative historians of his generation, has died in Sydney, aged 77. He was professor of history in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University between 1973 and 1990, having first come to Australia as one of the designers of Flinders University and its foundation professor of history. Born in Ireland, he held degrees from University College Dublin and Cambridge, where he became fellow and honorary fellow of St Catherine's College. He had also been admitted to the Irish Bar. Before coming to Australia with his wife, Carmel, and their young family, he was professor of modern history at University College, Cork. MacDonagh was a quietly formidable independent thinker, immensely learned with instant recall, armed with a quick but gentle wit. Everything he wrote was original, powerful and elegant. His Pattern of Government Growth [1961], on the British Passenger Acts of the 19th century, which had been imposed to make sea travel less hazardous, immediately displayed a main gift of great historians - the distinctive vision and passion to take what might seem at first sight to be a smallish subject and recreate it as a searing piece of human experience and a major illumination on public policy-making.
