EMBARGO: UNTIL DELIVERY ADDRESS BY THE HON PETER COSTELLO MP TREASURER TO AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY GROUP ANNUAL DINNER Monday, 19 August 2002 Thank you for your invitation to speak here tonight. I thought I might comment tonight on the big story in international markets, the volatility of world stockmarkets and its implications for regulatory policy. Compare this with the growth in the ASX200 index. The ASX200 was much more steady and incremental in growth - no bubble and no bust. But remember back to 2000. Most people saw our market's `conservative' growth as an indication of some kind of failure - we were an old economy rather than a new one, we had missed the ICT boom, etc. etc. At that time I argued we were a new economy not because we manufactured ICT but because we used it. And better than putting all our eggs in the tech basket was to have a rounded economy that was broadly based and could withstand shocks. Slide 2 shows that over the last three or so years, the Australian share market has performed extremely well compared to other markets. The Reserve Bank reports in its latest

The Australian dairy industry is Australia's largest processed food industry, and ranks in the top four of the nation's rural industries. Our climate and natural resources allow production based on year-round pasture grazing. Australia has over two million dairy cows, producing around 10 billion litres of milk each year. Our country is one of the world's leading exporters of dairy products, exporting over $3 billion worth of milk and related products annually. About half of all Australia's milk is exported in some form, be it cheese, milk powder, butter, or lesser known products like casein or whey powder.
