Susan Ingram Neue Galerie , a museum devoted to early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design in an elegant mansion on Fifth Avenue and 86th Street that Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt once called home, opened in November, 2001, while the doors beneath the graphic blade of the new Austrian Cultural Forum building on East 52nd between Fifth and Madison Avenues were officially opened to the public in April 2002. The appearance, and appearances, of these two structures reveal the tension between two very different visions of Austrian culture, which currently seem to be competing for dominance on the world stage. ), its director, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, explains why the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs decided to change what had previously been its cultural institutes into forums: All the existing cultural institutions of the Ministry abroad, including the cultural departments of embassies, are included in this concept: an intention to further broaden our platform for more open and fertile discourse as a channel for exchange and understanding. The word forum therefore reflects more accurately the philosophy of the Ministry today. There are 28 of these Austrian cultural outlets in different cities around the world, including two in the United States, in Washington and New York. New York is the largest, of course, the flagship here and internationally. And I think our new building on 52nd Street communicates this boldly.

The women who sewed the shirts, owners of a female sewing cooperative in Cuidad Sandino, Nicaragua, are dependent on consistent clothing orders to keep their self-made business running. Because the cooperative is conducted under fair labor conditions, the products cost more to manufacture than similar versions that are mass-produced in sweatshops. The women of the cooperative are constantly competing with sweatshops and often experience periods of little or no work.
In need of funds to keep their business from falling apart, the women of the cooperative tried to borrow money to invest in cloth for their work. According to the Center for Development in Central America, which helped the women build the cooperative following Hurricane Mitch, the World Bank denied a request for a loan made by the women, claiming that the project was too small. Local banks, which the women also turned to, could only offer a loan at 20 percent interest.
The T-shirts are an example of charitable acts by Greeks.

    The Making of an Austrian
    By Gitta Honegger

    348 pp, 44 illus. ISBN 0-300-08999-6, $29.95
    Yale University Press, 20002
Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989), a literary figure of international acclaim and arguably Austria's greatest post-World War II writer, became the first of his generation to expose unrelentingly his country's pathological denial of complicity in the Holocaust. Bernhard's writings and indeed his own biography reflect Austria's fraught efforts to define itself as a nation following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy and the trauma of World War II. Repeatedly he scandalized the nation with novels, plays, and public statements that exposed the convoluted ways Austrians were attempting to come to terms with their Nazi past - or defiantly avoiding doing so. This book, the first comprehensive Thomas Bernhard biography in English, examines his life and work and their intricate relationship to Austria's geographical, political, and cultural transformations in the twentieth century.
While Thomas Bernhard was the scourge of his native culture, Gitta Honegger explains, he was also a product of that same culture. Appreciation of his controversial impact on his society is possible only through an understanding of the contradictions, the shame, and the achievements that mark Austrians' self-perception in the postwar years.

By publishing a wide range of articles in English, together with a selection of book reviews, it aims to make recent research accessible to a broadly based international readership. The new series of Austrian Studies will follow the model established in the first by Professor Ritchie Robertson and Professor Edward Timms: each volume will have a coherent but broadly conceived theme, and including space for reviews of the most important recent publications in the field of Austrian Studies. Each volume will also include a substantial review article devoted to keeping readers up-to-date with the very latest Austrian literature and with major cultural debates and events. Besides the names of well-known persons, also found in other encyclopedias, such as Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Karl Kraus, Sigmund Freud, Lise Meitner, Gustav Mahler or Billy Wilder, great care has been taken to include also those who are in danger of being forgotten because they published only very few works before their careers were violently brought to an end. Here, for the first time, they have been gathered together and presented to the public, alphabetically arranged and with biographical details. A lot of information comes from the intensive contact between the compilers and those concerned, or their relatives, descendants or the executors of their estates.
