He directed the Austrian Program kin 1997-98. He was born in Greece and has lived and traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and China. Dr. Kiryakakis was Director of International Education at CSB/SJU from 1987 to 1989 and Head Soccer Coach at CSB from 1985-87. Besides German, he has taught Honors Symposium, Senior Seminar, and an upper division Judeo-Christian core course. As an undergraduate he majored in political science and history. In 1978, he received his Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. As a Fulbright scholar he studied modern German literature at the University of T übingen in German Austrian Program Index Program Site Few cities in Europe can compare to the unique setting of Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the site of the CSB/SJU Austrian Program. Overshadowed by the towering Untersberg (2000 meters high) and nearby alpine mountains, the city itself is couched between the smaller Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg, divided by the Salzach River, and dominated by the mighty fortress Hohensalzburg. Magnificent baroque architecture enhances this city of churches and palaces, cloisters and courtyards. The old city is separated from more modern developments by natural barriers, allowing the city to make the most of both worlds, medieval and modern. Salzburg is also known for its university, founded by Benedictine monks in 1617, closed by Napoleon in 1810, it reopened once again in 1962 as a state university.

    In and Around Frankfurt
Having Austria as the Focal Point of the 1995 Frankfurt Book Fair represents the first time in the history of the Fair that there has been a German-language focus. The literature of Austria is sustained by the thematic conflicts of harmony and rifts, of encounters and confrontations, of changing relationships and the overstepping of boundaries. These complicated associations reflect a cultural diversity which is truly representative of Europe. The diverse programmes for the Austrian Focal Theme were set up in conjunction with the most important Frankfurt cultural sites and institutions, along with the Austrian publishing houses and institutions. A thematic and comprehensive programme is presented, ranging from the Book Fair events to public functions in and around Frankfurt, offering visitors different interpretations of the cultural development in Austrian culture during the 20th century in the form of literature, music, art, and architecture. In this autumn of 1995, numerous public functions invite Frankfurt Book Fair visitors to take part in cultural "expeditions" to Austria:

“Engaging, witty, informative, and lovingly ironic, this is an important book that will command the attention of all friends of recent literature and the theater.”Peter Demetz, Yale University Dear Reviewer: Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989), a literary figure of international acclaim and arguably Austria’s greatest post–World War II writer, became the first of his generation to expose unrelentingly his country’s pathological denial of complicity in the Holocaust. Bernhard’s writings and indeed his own biography reflect Austria’s fraught efforts to define itself as a nation following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy and the trauma of World War II. Repeatedly he scandalized the nation with novels, plays, and public statements that exposed the convoluted ways Austrians were attempting to come to terms with their Nazi pastor defiantly avoiding doing so. THOMAS BERNHARD: The Making of an Austrian ( Yale University Press: January), is the first comprehensive biography of Thomas Bernhard in English. In it, Gitta Honegger examines his life and work and their intricate relationship to Austria’s geographical, political, and cultural transformations in the twentieth century.

    Austriaca
The main priority of any national library is to collect literature in and about the country it represents. Austriaca therefore clearly rate as the focal collecting policy for the Austrian National Library and can be defined as follows:
    • Depository Copies in accordance with Austrian media law
      Austriaca abroad

The independent further existence of Austrian culture outside the country is also a consideration in the collecting policy followed (e.g. the Prague circle, psychoanalysis etc.). Areas which only belonged to Austria in the form of a Habsburg regent are rated as Austriaca only in so far as the publication establishes an Austrian connection or reciprocal influence.
The same applies to works by Austrians published abroad irrespective of the author's actual citizenship.
Persons who have served Austria, or who were born in what was once Austria and who are carriers of Austrian culture and intellect abroad are included in the definition of Austriaca. (e.g. Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Friedrich Hebbel, Heinrich Laube, Claus Peymann and others). For reasons of financing and space, translations are merely selected and generally not collected, although they are registered in the Austrian Bibliography, section C, which includes Austriaca available from abroad (plus call number) and titles of works not acquired. Belletristic works are an exception. The acquisitions department is eager to acquire all available translations by Austrian authors. Historical State Territory

    Preface: Bruckner and Wagner
Comparison is often made of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) . Is Bruckner "Wagnerian"? Here are some of my observations: The "meaning" of Bruckner's music lies in the symphonic form of purely instrumental music. Bruckner's language is the magnificent and glorious sound of brass, timpani and the songs of the birds expressed so serenely and sadly by the tone of the winds. The musical note itself speaks the language of depth. However, one of the most significant "meanings" of Wagner's music is its narrative(i.e. story drama) and symbols(e.g. leitmotifs) of myth(e.g. Der Ring Des Niebelungen often called Ring). Musical leitmotifs connects the musical theme with symbolic concepts, characters and objects(e.g. love, Brunnhilde, gold).

05:03 AM Jun. 16, 1998 PT ESSEN, Germany From the outside it looks like a giant '50s-style chrome mobile home, aslant, no less, and perched on a lush green lawn. Inside is an underground fantasy world conceived by Austrian artist Andre Heller around the idea that a giant meteorite has crashed into Earth and is here to be explored. Meteorite is an unusual public space that defies categorization: It's a museum, gallery, concert hall, playground, and meditation zone all in one.

The German energy firm RWE Group commissioned Heller to do the project to celebrate its centennial and make a lasting contribution to the industrial city of Essen. Designed by Vienna, Austria-based architecture firm Propeller Z and filled with music by American composer Tod Machover , Meteorite opened 5 June.
