The Society for Austrian and Habsburg History was founded in 1957 as The American Committee to Promote Studies of the History of the Habsburg Monarchy. It has been operating under its present name since 1989. Founded in 1965 by R. John Rath, the Austrian History Yearbook remains the only English-language journal devoted to the history of the territories in Central Europe that were formerly under Habsburg rule and now comprise the modern states of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and parts of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the search for stability in the former East bloc has brought an upsurge of interest in the region's Habsburg heritage. Typically, each issue of the Yearbook contains five to six fully peer-reviewed articles, a forum on an important historical issue, a review article, and 30 to 40 book reviews. Two recent articles have won prestigious prizes awarded by affiliate societies of the American Historical Association: Karl Bahm's on "Rethinking Nation, Culture, and Modernity in Nineteenth Century Central Europe" and Alice Freifeld's on "Marketing Industrialization and Dualism in Liberal Hungary: Expositions 1842-1896." But even if Empress "Sissy" was surely the most famous Austrian Leoowner, the Austrian History is more than that. This is out of the "Kynologisches Jahrbuch 1898" Austria; the article refers to dog-breeding in generally. This article refers to Leonberger breeding - 1908 - 1913 - in Germany, Austria and Böhmen (which belongs today to Poland / Czechy) Breeding must have taken place in Austria end of the 19th century (maybe earlier) as in the Leonberger Chronik several Leo's listed by name - and this list is out of the magazine "Hundesport & Jagd", dated Aug. 19, 1897. Especially the Leo Abdel Rigo Austria is most likely an Austria Leo.
