What are sources of information and support? Autism Isolated in worlds of their own, people with autism appear indifferent and remote and are unable to form emotional bonds with others. Although people with this baffling brain disorder can display a wide range of symptoms and disability, many are incapable of understanding other people's thoughts, feelings, and needs. Often, language and intelligence fail to develop fully, making communication and social relationships difficult. Many people with autism engage in repetitive activities, like rocking or banging their heads, or rigidly following familiar patterns in their everyday routines. Some are painfully sensitive to sound, touch, sight, or smell. Children with autism do not follow the typical patterns of child development. In some children, hints of future problems may be apparent from birth. In most cases, the problems become more noticeable as the child slips farther behind other children the same age. Other children start off well enough. But between 18 and 36 months old, they suddenly reject people, act strangely, and lose language and social skills they had already acquired. T HE H ARVARD M ENTAL H EALTH L ETTER Volume 13, Number 9 March 1997 First described and named by Leo Kanner in 1944, the mysterious disability of autism is characterized by a peculiar emotional and intellectual detachment from other people and the common human world. In autistic children, an impaired capacity for communication and human relationships and a severely restricted range of activities and interests become evident before the age of three. Although the symptoms vary in nature and severity, language and the capacity for a normal social life are always seriously affected. Two to four out of 10,000 children are autistic; 75% of them are boys. Early signs The earliest signs may appear in the first months of life. Autistic infants often shrink from touch. Instead of cuddling when picked up, they may go limp or stiffen, and they do not cling to parents who return after an absence. Normally, children will smile at the sound of their mother’s voice when they are two or three months old. Later in the first year they begin to reach with their hands, carry on wordless "conversations," and eventually progress to syllables like "ma" and "pa." Before the end of the first year they are pointing out objects to others’ attention and looking sad when someone else looks sad or anxious. Many autistic children never reach these stages or pass through them at a later age. In infancy, the symptoms may be subtle and almost unnoticeable or optimistically disregarded by parents, but it is usually clear by age two or three that something is wrong. Autistic children have little interest in others or understanding of their needs and feelings. They do not maintain eye contact and seem barely able to distinguish their parents from strangers. They ignore other children and prefer repetitious, solitary play, such as staring at revolving objects or arranging things in meaningless patterns. They may repeatedly lay out objects in lines, sit silently watching sand dribble through their hands for hours, or spin in an apparently trance like state. Their air of detachment and drive for solitude sometimes create the impression that they come from or live in a world not ours, and it has been suggested that autism is the source of stories about children who are fairy changelings.

"(The findings) have huge implications because it could change how aspirin is given routinely throughout the world," Dr. Mark Alberts, the study's lead researcher, said at the American Stroke Association conference. Many people take a baby aspirin in hopes of thinning their blood to reduce clots, which trigger strokes. The study, however, showed adult aspirin may give people better results. Alberts said his research into the matter would continue. Child Autism Patients Needed For Study Scientists are looking for Indiana children with autism to participate in a study of a drug that has shown promise in treating the neurological disorder.
