MMR and autism Another publication has strengthened the assertion that there is no link between autism and the administration of MMR vaccines. The journal "Vaccine" has published an article (1) from the United Kingdom that uses a self-controlled case series method to examine the age at diagnosis of autism compared with age at administration of one or two doses of MMR vaccine and the age at diagnosis of autism for children who received no MMR vaccine. There was statistically no difference between the groups. "In all instances, the relative incidence is not significantly different from 1, indicating no association between vaccination and autism in the subsequent risk period." The authors go on to say their results do not support the hypothesis that MMR or measles containing vaccines cause autism at any time after vaccination. These findings further strengthen a similar study by the same authors published in 1999 (2). WHO stresses the importance of scientifically evaluating rumours, anecdotal reports, rumours and speculation about the safety of vaccines. The Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety has recently published its guidelines for assessing causality in this context in the Weekly Epidemiology Record (3). WHO is not aware of any scientific evidence that meets the criteria laid out by the Committee that might substantiate an association between autism and MMR vaccines.

Early diagnosis of autism made easier
    Thursday, 11 April 2002
The earlier autism is diagnosed, the more likely treatment will be effective.
A simple screening tool developed by Australian researchers will help practitioners identify whether a child as young as 18 months needs assessment for autism.
The Developmental Behaviour Checklist (DBC) Early Screen was developed by Ms Kylie Gray for her PhD at Monash University's Centre for Developmental Psychiatry and Psychology.
"The screening device is just there to be used by GPs, paediatricians and early childhood services, to flag children who may be at risk of autism," explained Ms Gray, who is working as a Research Fellow at Monash University.
"The results will indicate if a child needs to be taken for specialist autism assessment."
The screening device consists of 30 questions to be completed by parents in the waiting room.
Ms Gray measured how well the screening instrument worked by asking parents to fill in the questionnaire. She then assessed their child without referring to the test, and later compared her assessment against the results of the test.
In a community field trial through Southern Health's Specialist Children's Services, the group tested any child in the 18 to 48-month age range who had suspected developmental delay.

Summary: A French researcher and his team have studied the pattern of autism in the population of Languedoc in France.
The word 'autism' strikes fear in the hearts of parents. They imagine a child who is going to be locked inside his or her own head and never able to interact properly with the world, much less become self-sufficient.
But in fact according to work done in France and elsewhere, that's to some extent a misleading view of the condition. But there is still a lot of controversy over whether in its milder forms, you're looking at autism or another problem altogether.
Charles Aussilloux is an authority in this field. He's Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Montpellier in the South of France, which is where I visited him.
Charles wanted to get a clear picture of the full spectrum of people with autism, how it evolves in childhood and later in life.
To do this, he and his team have studied the pattern of autism in the population of Languedoc, the region around Montpellier.
Charles Aussilloux: The evolution of autistic persons are very different, and when we see the evolution when children in their adulthood, five persons are normal existence; they are autonomous, they can have a job, they can live by themselves and they have only to have support when something bad comes in their existence.

    What Is Autism?
The brain disorder autism begins in early childhood and persists throughout adulthood affecting three crucial areas of development: verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, and creative or imaginative play. Autism is the most common of a group of conditions called pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs). PDDs involve delays in many areas of childhood development. The first signs of autism are usually noticed by the age of three. Many individuals who are autistic also develop epilepsy, a brain disorder that causes convulsive seizures, as they approach adulthood. Other characteristics may include repetitive and ritualistic behaviors, hand flapping, spinning or running in circles, excessive fears, self-injury such as head banging or biting, aggression, insensitivity to pain, temper tantrums, and sleeping and eating disturbances. Autistic individuals live a normal life span, but most require lifelong care and supervision. Leo Kanner first identified autism in 1943 when he described 11 self-absorbed children who had "autistic disturbances of affect contact." At first, autism was thought to be an attachment disorder resulting from poor parenting. This has been proved to be a myth. While the cause remains a mystery, most specialists now view autism as a brain disorder that makes it difficult for the person to process and respond to the world. Autism has been observed in several members of the same families. Therefore, many scientists believe that, at least in some individuals, autism may be genetic. Scientists have identified some genes as playing a possible role in the development of autism.

    Autism: Steps Toward a Cure
    by Kay Ness
I want to give you some information on autism to ameliorate some of the fear that this term brings to parents. This is a confusing label, especially when you search the literature. I will just tell you some of what I've seen from my own experience working with families that have children with autism. What Is Autism? Neurodevelopmental Training Metabolic ... Conclusion
    What is Autism?
The whole topic of autism is a huge topic and deserves a careful explanation. First, identifying what autism is. Children and adults are identified as being on the autistic spectrum and vary widely in their symptoms. To be labeled on the ASD spectrum, is simply to be found to have certain symptoms and these checklists are readily available from many sources. The time it becomes important to identify where your child falls on the spectrum is when you are looking for having resources paid for by the state or covered by insurance (but good luck if it is anything outside of the mainstream). Individuals that are a little odd or socially inappropriate with certain sensory issues can be labeled as being on the spectrum (Asperger's or PDD). Individuals who are totally out of touch and don't speak or interact are also on the spectrum. So, we are dealing with a wide variety of individuals here with wildly different issues.
