Current evidence tells us that DDT was responsible for a host of medical problems and the deaths of many children - but the link wasn’t proven until more than 30 years later! I’m certain that the dangers of some chemicals in common use in the United States today have yet to be proven. However, in October 2001, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took a major step forward, announcing four new children's environmental health research centers. They will look into environmental exposures that may contribute to

What is going on in the body? Autism is the most severe form of the pervasive developmental disorders , which affect a person's ability to interact with others. The hallmark signs of autism are extreme difficulty in responding to social interactions and communicating with others. Autism is most often noticed before the age of 3. It occurs four times more often in boys than in girls. It seems to appear equally among all parts of society. It affects about 5 out of 10,000 people. Some people who have autism may also have other disorders that affect the brain. These include: epilepsy Down syndrome fragile X syndrome Turner syndrome What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? A person with autism may have many symptoms. Autism can vary in degree. It can range from mild symptoms to more severe forms with intense symptoms that may affect every part of a person's life. All of the symptoms can vary in degree. An Introduction To Autism
Autism was first described in 1943 by the American child psychologist, Leo Kanner. Autism is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder, and usually appears within the first three years of a child's life. The hallmark of autism is the lack of communication, and affected children have problems with language, behavior, and social skills.
Autism is a lifelong condition, and its cause is unknown. Environmental and genetic factors do contribute to the development of autism, but most children with autism have normal health, with no medical reason for the autistic symptoms. Autism is not caused by the parents.
HOW PREVALENT IS AUTISM?
  • It affects about 1 in 500 children. It is much more common in males than females (4:1 ratio).

  • WHAT ARE THE EARLY SYMPTOMS OF AUTISM?
  • A baby who doesn't babble or gesture by the age of 12 months. A baby who lacks eye contact with its mother by the age of 12 months. A baby who resists being held or cuddled by its mother. A baby who doesn't respond when its mother says its name.

    • unresponsiveness to parents or other stimuli (often described as living in a world of their own). lack of eye contact (look through others as if they are not there). difficulty with bonding and forming relationships. preferring to play alone. resistance to being held or cuddled. avoidance of physical contact by stiffening or running away. becoming quite distressed by physical contact or being unresponsive to physical contact. Some people with autism appear quite affectionate, but usually only when they initiate the contact or when it is on their own terms. difficulty understanding and expressing emotion. facial expression is often blank or neutral, and they are unable to "read" or understand the facial expressions of others. inappropriate laughter.

      Anxiety Disorders
The combined prevalence of the group of disorders known as anxiety disorders is higher than that of virtually all other mental disorders of childhood and adolescence (Costello et al., 1996). The 1-year prevalence in children ages 9 to 17 is 13 percent (Table 3-1). This section furnishes brief overviews of several anxiety disorders: separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Treatments for all but the latter are grouped together below. Separation Anxiety Disorder
Separation anxiety is often associated with symptoms of depression, such as sadness, withdrawal, apathy, or difficulty in concentrating, and such children often fear that they or a family member might die. Young children experience nightmares or fears at bedtime. About 4 percent of children and young adolescents suffer from separation anxiety disorder (DSM-IV). Among those who seek treatment, separation anxiety disorder is equally distributed between boys and girls. In survey samples, the disorder is more common in girls (DSM-IV). The disorder may be overdiagnosed in children and teenagers who live in dangerous neighborhoods and have reasonable fears of leaving home. The remission rate with separation anxiety disorder is high. However, there are periods where the illness is more severe and other times when it remits. Sometimes the condition lasts many years or is a precursor to panic disorder with agoraphobia. Older individuals with separation anxiety disorder may have difficulty moving or getting married and may, in turn, worry about separation from their own children and partner.

    http://www.autismlivingworking.org/MR-MH.htm
AUTISM AND THE MENTAL RETARDATION AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES SYSTEMS IN PENNSYLVANIA
Beginning in the 1970s, federal disabilities law abandoned "mental retardation" as a category in favor of "developmental disability." In an enlightened attempt to establish a system of community-based services as an alternative to state institutions, Pennsylvania enacted the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Act (MH/MR Act) in 1966. Though intended to cover everyone with a severe disability, the Act only covers persons with “mental retardation” (individuals with IQ scores below 70) and persons with “mental illness.” These criteria mean Pennsylvania’s MH/MR Act excludes many people with autism because, since 1980, autism is no longer classified as a mental illness, and recent developments in communication technology and alternative ways to test IQ suggest that most people with autism do not have mental retardation. Nevertheless it is clear that they have a lifelong need for some degree of supports and accommodations.
Beginning in the 1970s, federal disabilities law abandoned “mental retardation” as a category in favor of “developmental disability,” a classification based on functional criteria. Instead of using an IQ score below 70 to determine that a person is disabled, a developmental disability is confirmed if the person has substantial functional limitations in three or more of the following areas of major life activity: self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. “Mental illness” is diagnosed according to criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association. Autism, once considered a mental illness, is now classified by the DSM as a “developmental disorder.”
