Both hospital-based and outpatient services are offered through the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Child Development. Hospital-based services provide psychiatric care for children and adolescents who are hospitalized for medical conditions. Outpatient services include eight specialty clinics that treat specific disorders within a wider range of childhood conditions.

What causes autism? How is autism treated? Is my autistic child entitled to any benefits? ... What can I do to help? What is autism? Autism is a brain disorder that can severely limit a child's ability to communicate or interact with others. The condition affects about one in every 700 children, striking boys more often than girls. About half of all autistic children show developmental problems shortly after birth; the rest seem perfectly normal at first but abruptly lose their language and social skills between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. In many cases, the first sign of trouble comes when an infant or toddler seems to tune out everyone around him. Often, autistic children cry if they're cuddled or even touched, a heartbreaking development for any parent. Although autism can take many forms, certain features stand out as hallmarks of the disorder. Language. Children with autism are slow to pick up words, and some never learn to talk at all. Those who do speak may have excellent pronunciation, but they often struggle with the rhythm, intonation, and meaning of speech. Many children with autism simply echo whatever they hear. (If you ask, "Would you like some milk?" the child might respond with, "You would like some milk.") Others have rich vocabularies, but they may spend most of their time talking obsessively about favorite subjects; they may also have trouble understanding humor or irony.

Autism: Causes And Symptoms
Autism is a severe developmental disorder. The actual cause is not known. A child with autism does not develop a normal personality or interactive skills. Impairment is seen in communication skills, social interaction, and emotional development. Autism usually can be detected before the child is 30 months old. It is an uncommon but lifelong disorder that affects about 4 children out of 10,000. Boys are likely to have it 3 or 4 times more often than girls. Autistic children exhibit odd characteristics in 4 primary areas:
SOCIAL RELATIONS: Infants may have a delayed or absent social smile. They may fail to interact with caregivers. They may not reach out to be picked up and held. Pleasure is not shown in cuddling or other contact. A lack of social interest is present as the child ages. BEHAVIOR: Repetitive behavior occurs in the child's second year. Examples are flicking a light switch on and off, passing a toy back and forth from one hand to the other, or walking around a room feeling the walls. Common body movements might include hand flicking or twisting, spinning, or head-banging. Stopping these behaviors or disturbing their surroundings may cause the child to respond with a temper tantrum.

Some autistic children are moderately to severely retarded but some are not. Children with autism have difficulty giving and receiving affection and responding appropriately to social cues. They tend to establish rigid routines in their daily activities and become upset whenever anything unexpected happens. The term pervasive developmental disorder, or PDD, is currently used to include autism and other related disorders. What is Autism?
Autism is classified as one of the pervasive developmental disorders of the brain. It is not a disease. People with classical autism show three types of symptoms:
impaired social interaction problems with verbal and nonverbal communication unusual or severely limited activities and interests
These symptoms can vary in severity. In addition, people with autism often have abnormal responses to sounds, touch, or other sensory stimulation. Symptoms usually appear during the first three years of childhood and continue through life. Recent studies strongly suggest that some people have a genetic predisposition to autism. Researchers are looking for clues about which genes contribute to this increased susceptibility. In some children, environmental factors also may play a role. Studies of people with autism have found abnormalities in several regions of the brain which suggest that autism results from a disruption of early fetal brain development. Autism affects an estimated 10 to 20 of every 10,000 people, depending on diagnostic criteria used, and strikes males about four times more often than females.

Autism and Vaccine Research Is there any scientific evidence that proves a linkage between autism and vaccines? To date there is no conclusive evidence that any vaccine can cause autism. What about the Wakefield study? The theory that autism might be caused by poor absorption of nutrients resulting from a bowel inflammation is also not supported by clinical data. In at least four of the 12 cases reported in the Lancet study, behavioral problems appeared before the onset of symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease; that is, the effect preceded the proposed cause. The same authors published another study in which they performed highly specific laboratory assays of patients with inflammatory bowel disease following MMR vaccination, the cause for autism they posited in their initial study. These patients tested negative for the measles virus, which would not support the theory the authors posed in their original study (Chadwick et al 1998, Duclos and Ward 1998). Subsequently, these authors and other collaborators have reported detection of measles virus from blood cells and intestinal samples from children with autism and inflammatory bowel disease (Kawashima et al 2000). The authors also report detection of wild type and vaccine strains of measles virus RNA in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases without the diagnosis of autism, thus making it impossible to associate measles virus RNA with autistic disorders. Other scientists have published studies that measles virus RNA (Afzal MA et al 2000) and protein (Iizuka M et al 2000) are not present in intestinal specimens from patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Immunisation against measles, mumps and rubella does not cause autism in children, according to the findings of public health specialists which they say should end the argument that has been raging for three years. Their paper re-analyses the results of a study of all children diagnosed with autism in the North Thames health region after the theory of a link between the vaccine and autism caused a scare among parents of babies.
